HDMI out (#223) on every platform that has one: the ESP32-P4's LT8912B bridge, a Linux machine's HDMI port, and a Mac's or Windows PC's second display; plus restore or clone a backup, the Olimex P4-PC, and the work listed below.

What it changes, and why

  • HDMI out on the ESP32-P4 (HDMI out: ESP32-P4 boards with an LT8912B, and Linux #223): HdmiDriver shows the layer on a monitor or an LED wall's sending card, through the LT8912B bridge on the Olimex ESP32-P4-PC, scaled by the P4's PPA. 1280x720 at 60 Hz runs at a 60 MHz pixel clock, WLED-MM's timing; the bridge's receiver is reset onto the running stream. The monitor's EDID is read back for its name, preferred size and listed modes.
  • HDMI out on desktops (HDMI out: ESP32-P4 boards with an LT8912B, and Linux #223): one output loop over a per-platform screen. Linux drives DRM/KMS through the kernel's own ioctls, with no new library, on any machine without a desktop holding the screen. macOS and Windows cover a second display with a full-screen window, its mode set for as long as the output runs. Modes up to 4K, hot-plug, and the EDID on all three. The status names the mode the display actually runs.
  • Shared handovers: the frame slot and the monitor seqlock live once in hdmi_handover.h, for the ESP32 and the desktop alike; neither render tick allocates.
  • Restore or clone a backup (Roadmap proposal: node replication. #76): a backup bundle asks what it is for before it writes. Restore puts a device back as it was; clone makes another device like it and keeps that device's own name, WiFi networks, Ethernet static IP and stored hardware address. Cancel writes nothing.
  • Olimex ESP32-P4-PC in the device catalog: Ethernet, SD card, I2C, the ES8311 input on the headset jack's mic ring and Parlio LED pins, from the Rev C schematic, with its photo. P4 images read their flash at QIO 80 MHz.
  • The grabber's mode in the status: the Picture service says live, 360 x 180 from 640x480 at 6 fps, the picture's size and the mode the HDMI grabber streams.
  • Button service (Button Service: allow action on state change #210): a set row follows its switch from boot, and a target restored after the row is retried once a second.
  • GEQ PPA's look in the spectrum effect.
  • Discord reader: an MCP server in moondeck/report/ that reads the server's channels read-only, the source of the summary in #moonlight-summary.
  • Plans closed as issues: JSON in MoonLive services #213, One resumable send in the HTTP server #214, Streams, every frame from outside #215 and Processes, described once #217, what only a plan held moved to the docs first. Docs link tracking issues (LED output: drivers, expanders and transfer #218 to MoonLive language and catalog #221) rather than Project cards, which project_mirror --check enforces.
  • ColorLight cards: setting a card up in LEDVision, in the panel cards reference.
  • NDI driver: a disabled driver frees its staging, as every other video driver does.
  • CodeRabbit config: generated files, plans and images are filtered, so a pull request's review fits CodeRabbit's 100-file limit.

What an agent wrote

Claude wrote the code, tests and docs; the Reviewer (Fable) read each staged diff and the whole branch before merge, and its findings are listed per commit message. The product owner reviewed and staged every line.

What you tested, and on which hardware

  • Desktop: unit tests, scenarios, JS and Python tests, and the commit checks pass on each commit.
  • Restore, clone and cancel in a browser against the desktop app.
  • Every ESP32 variant and the Teensy build.
  • Olimex ESP32-P4-PC (v1.0) with a 1080p monitor: a stable 1280x720 picture through effect switches, network changes and hot-plug; Ethernet, LEDs and the codec; the HDMI live scenario passes on it. Known: about one boot in four shows noise, tracked in HDMI out: ESP32-P4 boards with an LT8912B, and Linux #223.
  • Raspberry Pi 5 (Raspberry Pi OS Lite, trixie) with an LG ultrawide: picture, hot-plug, modes up to 4K and the EDID; the HDMI live scenario passes on it.
  • MacBook with its own panel as the second display: the full-screen window, the running-mode status and a clean stop.
  • Windows: compile-checked with mingw-w64, not yet run on a PC.
  • Waveshare ESP32-P4-NANO with a USB HDMI grabber: the streamed mode in the Picture service's status.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added HDMI output on compatible ESP32-P4 hardware and desktop systems, with display mode, scaling, and frame-rate controls.
    • Added an Olimex ESP32-P4-PC device model with Ethernet, audio, and SD card support.
    • Added sweep colors and an optional level meter with an onset indicator to the audio spectrum effect.
    • Added a Clone option for backups that preserves the target device’s name, Wi-Fi configuration, and IP address.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Button actions now retry failed updates and synchronize when a control surface becomes available.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified backup restore and clone behavior, expanded PanelCard setup guidance, and added stream design and HDMI help.

Restoring a backup now asks what it is for: restore puts the device back as it was, clone makes another device like it and keeps that device's own name and network. The Olimex ESP32-P4-PC joins the device catalog, a latching switch is documented on the Button service, and finished plans move out of the repository into closed issues with their knowledge kept in the docs.

**Core**
- ButtonService.h: the guide says a push button takes `toggle` and a latching switch `set` with value 1 (#210).
- Sha1.h: the comment names SHA-1's one use, the WebSocket accept key.

**Light domain**
- FixtureChannels.h: the LightsHeader credit links the predecessor's source instead of the work archive.

**UI**
- app.js, migrate.js: a backup bundle asks restore or clone before it writes. A clone keeps the target's device name, WiFi known networks, Ethernet static IP and stored hardware address; cancel writes nothing. The report's restart note reads for both.

**Scripts/MoonDeck**
- discord_reader.py: an MCP server that reads the MoonModules Discord server read-only through a bot: every channel its role sees minus the GitHub feeds, a whole window with a link per message, attachments. Stdlib at import, the MCP SDK in main; a 429 waits as told, an offset converts to UTC.
- project_mirror.py: `unstable_links` replaces `dead_links` and fails any doc in `docs/` or `moondeck/` that links a card by its board address; a doc links an issue, the item's own or a tracking issue (#218 to #221) listing its card.
- deviceModels.json: the Olimex ESP32-P4-PC (v1.0 silicon, `esp32p4rev1-eth`): Ethernet on the P4 RMII preset (IP101GRR, address 1), SD on P4 SDMMC, I2C 7/8, the ES8311 input on the headset jack's mic ring, Parlio on 14-19, 46, 47; with its photo. Flashed to the bench board and the model applied over Ethernet.
- moontube clip 16: the restore-or-clone step, its speech measured.

**Tests**
- backup-bundle.test.mjs: restore and clone, what a clone keeps, cancel.
- test_discord_reader.py: channels read and skipped, a window's edges and paging, a refused channel, the summary channel left out, the message line, a 429 with an HTML body, offsets, name resolution.
- test_project_mirror.py: a card's board address and a mirror link fail, an issue link passes.

**Docs/CI**
- Plans closed as issues: JSON in MoonLive services (#213), One resumable send (#214), Streams (#215), Processes, described once (#217); their files deleted. Streams' analysis is the design study `docs/design/streams.md`, since Video in, LED walls out builds on it; the MoonWalk model doc gains the runs on GitHub and the Project's fields.
- Pick, spec and plan a topic: closing a plan first moves what only the plan holds to its home.
- Audio that answers the music: approved.
- panel-cards.md: setting a ColorLight card up in LEDVision, and two rows in When the wall stays dark; the LEDVision process folds into it.
- backup-and-restore.md, MoonWalk 07 and 14: restore and clone.
- MoonWalk 10 and 13: the desktop build is warning-free beyond the two kinds the code check counts.
- Doc links to Project cards point at tracking issues #218 to #221; the Input mapping plan absorbs three cards into its backlog; clock sync is named unlinked.
- mooncore.md Services: the out-of-scope sentence goes, back under the 500-word cap.
- repo-health: every ESP32 variant and the Teensy rebuilt, so the table compares against v7.0.0 again.

**Reviews**
- Reviewer: a 429 with a non-JSON body crashed `_get`; done, `_retry_after` reads the body, then the header, then 1 s, with a test.
- Reviewer: `read_server` overwrote a given offset; done, `_utc` converts it, with a test.
- Reviewer: clip 16's new step had no `speech`; done, measured at 13.3 s.
- Reviewer: an empty channel name read the first channel; done, refused, with a test.
- Reviewer: design/moonlive.md called the code cap "its own issue" while linking #221; done.
- Reviewer: a missing keychain token surfaced as `CalledProcessError`; done, it names the command that stores it.
- Reviewer: the 429 and name-resolution paths had no tests; done, three added.
- Reviewer: a clone rewrites an unchanged file with new whitespace; skipped, harmless and not a defect.
- check_docgen: the close step's detail ran 138 words past its 120 cap; done, trimmed to 113.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names HDMI output on the ESP32-P4, Linux, macOS and Windows and the restore-or-clone backup change. Both are main changes in the raw summary: the HdmiDriver, platform HDMI implementations, and the migrate.js clone flow. The title covers the two largest parts of the changeset, though it omits the many smaller items (Olimex device model, Discord reader, Button service, docs).

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's three sections: what it changes and why, what an agent wrote, and what was tested and on which hardware. It explains the HDMI work, the clone and restore flow, and the hardware test results, including the known boot-noise issue tracked in #223. The Discord reader, Button service, and other smaller items are described as well. The template's first line about the one-topic, 400-line, and ten-file limits is not addressed. The PR also contains far more than 400 changed lines and over 100 files, which conflicts with the template's stated scope.

Synchronize the initial state of a latching switch.

The new guide promises that an open switch turns its target off. On startup, beginPin() sets pressed to false, so an already-open switch takes this return and never writes zero. With the default Control.switch1 binding, Drivers.on can remain on until the switch is closed and opened. Initialize a set row from the settled pin state after its binding is available. Review comment at @src/core/services/ButtonService.h at line 197:
Update ButtonService initialization so each set row applies its target value
from the settled pin state once its binding is available; an initially open
switch must turn its target off instead of returning without synchronizing it.
Preserve the existing settled-state behavior for subsequent pin updates.

A process file is the definition and one run of it is an instance, the split workflow engines make. The repository keeps the one definition; GitHub keeps the instances and the work. It is no process engine, editor or server: a schema, the process files, one generator and an adapter in each runner.

- **Two kinds of step.** A volatile step acts on a device or in the app, and nothing records it. A recorded step changes the repository or what ships, such as a commit gate, a merge, a release or a verification on hardware, and leaves a record of its run. The kind follows from the process, not the action: every gate process MoonDeck lists, plus `pick-spec-plan` and `contribute-pr`, records its steps.

Do not describe manual steps as recorded.

pick-spec-plan contains only manual steps, while run_process.py records subprocess results and exits when a process has no script. The backlog entry for recorded process runs also describes manual issue records as future work. Narrow this sentence to automated steps, or implement manual recording before documenting it.

An Olimex ESP32-P4-PC shows the layer on a monitor or an LED wall's sending card over HDMI, scaled by hardware, after the clocks, the bridge's receiver reset and a console stall that each cost a picture were measured out on the bench. P4 boards read their flash at QIO 80 MHz, a button row set at boot follows its switch, a clone of a backup survives a malformed file, and the Discord reader refuses an oversize attachment before downloading it.

KPI: 256lights | Desktop:2240KB | tick:8/8/8/2/8/16/353/28/11/10us(FPS:125000/125000/125000/500000/125000/62500/2832/35714/90909/100000) | src:347(89436) | test:262(61744) | functions-over:345
Commit: src +747/-42 lines | test +282/-114 lines | code findings 1638 -> 1632 (duplicated block -6) | duplicated lines 3268 -> 3225 (-43)

**Core**
- ButtonService: a set row writes its settled state once at boot, so a switch open at boot turns its target off, and a write whose target is missing (a surface restored later) is retried once a second from tick1s rather than every poll; the settled test and the act-and-report step are named functions.
- SystemModule: the flash readout names the clock with the mode, "QIO, 80 MHz".
- DriverBase: correctToRgb corrects a source into tight RGB for an output that carries RGB only, shared by the NDI and HDMI drivers.

**Light domain**
- HdmiDriver: new. Mode (1280x720 at 60 Hz by default), fit or stretch, an fps ceiling; corrected like every driver; keeps its output through a re-prepare in the same mode, since every tree sweep reaches it and a monitor takes seconds to lock onto a restarted signal; the live status line is formatted once in prepare; release chains to the base.
- platform_esp32_hdmi.cpp: the DSI bus, the LT8912B through Espressif's esp_lcd_lt8912b, the frame scaled into the DPI framebuffer by the PPA. The task runs on core 1 with the output stage; every bridge transfer has a 50 ms timeout; the receiver and its clock synthesizer are reset again 100 ms into the stream; the vendor's tag logs at Warn, since IDF's USB-serial console stalls a write up to 50 ms with no reader and the bridge then comes up without a signal; a hot-plug rise rebuilds the panel; a shutdown handler releases the output and the PHY's LDO before a software restart; hdmiOpen refuses while the task is still inside a bring-up. The lane rate follows the pixel clock (24 bits over two lanes).
- platform_esp32_hdmi_modes.c: 1280x720 is WLED-MM's timing at 60 MHz, the clock the P4 makes exactly; the vendor's other modes stay until measured; a static assert ties the two tables.
- Kconfig MM_HDMI, the component dependency and the CMake sources; hasHdmi per platform; the desktop's stand-in records frames into a fixed buffer, and the desktop registers the driver so its card exists there.
- P4 sdkconfig fragments: QIO flash at 80 MHz, revision minimum 1.0, bootloader log at Warn, since the rev3 bootloader with QIO otherwise outgrows the 24 KB before the partition table.

**UI**
- migrate.js: cloneIdentity leaves a backup file that is no object as it is, where it threw before.

**Scripts/MoonDeck**
- check_docgen: the appendix total is no longer a ratcheted count; a section stays budgeted at ten lines, as the standards say.
- discord_reader: an attachment announced over the limit is refused before a byte is read or a directory made.
- project_mirror: a mirror link to a published .html page is read as the source's.
- screenshot_modules lists HdmiDriver; MoonDeck.md documents the Discord reader.

**Tests**
- unit_HdmiDriver: seven cases on the desktop stand-in (modes and default, one pixel per light, stretch, the fps ceiling, the status, the link kept through a re-prepare and restarted on a mode change, release clears). wall_fixture.h holds the wall and the wiring the NDI, HLS, PanelCard and HDMI tests shared by copy.
- unit_ButtonService: a set row on a switch open at boot; a missing surface retried on the slow tick and not per poll.
- JS: a clone leaves a non-object file alone; one device stub for both restore tests. Python: the oversize attachment refusal; the ratchet leaves the appendix total alone.

**Docs/CI**
- The HdmiDriver card with its image, the platform file's @technical sections each referenced by an @Xref from the code they explain, MoonWalk's document step naming where depth goes, plan setup's wording for a stopped plan, streams.md and the video plan linking #223, panel-cards.md (the card's own 5 V supply, Intelligent Setting), attributions for Espressif, Olimex and troyhacks, help.json and the metrics regenerated, the backlog mirror.

**Reviews**
- Flagged: hdmiClose gives up after 1 s while the task is inside a bring-up and hdmiOpen then starts a second task on one bridge. Done: the close waits up to 5 s and hdmiOpen refuses while the task has not exited.
- Flagged: HdmiDriver::release skips DriverBase::release, so staging and status outlive a disable. Done: chained; the mode change closes the platform output alone; the test pins the cleared status.
- Flagged: a set row whose write fails reruns its action every debounce period. Done: the first write stays on the poll, retries move to tick1s; pinned with a surface added late.
- Flagged: cloneIdentity throws on an identity file whose JSON is null, a string, a number or an array. Done: a guard; a JS test over the four shapes.
- Flagged: a bridge that is absent or does not answer reads "no monitor connected". Deferred: it needs a link state in the seam; named in the platform header's Open section for the next HDMI cycle.
- Flagged: fetch_attachment streams 25 MB before refusing and leaves its directory. Done: Content-Length first, the directory after; a Python test.
- Flagged: the HDMI mode list lives in three places and the runtime guard counts one table. Done: a static assert ties the two C tables; the width, height and hz copy stays, named in the modes file.
- Flagged: a control's help written twice, on the member and on the addSelect call. Done: one `///` per member.

moonwalk/13-document-commit.yaml:129
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

The desktop-build step names a script that is not in the checkout.

moonwalk/13-document-commit.yaml:129 sets when: { run: { script: moondeck/build/build_desktop.py } }. The moondeck/ tree at this head has no build directory, and rg --files finds no build_desktop.py. The step cannot run the script it names. Point the step at the script that actually builds the desktop firmware, or add that script.

The warning boundary in the step text matches the build configuration. The root CMakeLists.txt applies -Werror globally, then exempts only -Wfunction-effects and -Wframe-larger-than=512 through -Wno-error= flags. The two exempt warnings are the same two kinds the step text allows.

NdiDriver.h takes #227's per-light read by role. panel-cards.md and 06-advanced.yaml keep this branch's numbering, where "8. Set the card up in LEDVision" puts "When the wall stays dark" at 9.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The HDMI card now says what the monitor reports about itself, its name and preferred size, and whether the bridge is locked, and a deleted HDMI driver frees everything it held. The audio spectrum effect can draw exactly what WLED-MM's GEQ PPA draws, so two audio engines can be compared side by side, with a level bar and a square that flashes red on each hit. A GRB fixture profile now shows its true colors on HDMI, NDI, HLS and RTSP.

**Core**
- edid.h: new, the hardware-free EDID parser (E-EDID 1.4 with its CEA-861 extension): header and checksum, the established and standard timings, the detailed timings with the first as the preferred mode, the name descriptor, and the CEA video codes as a table; each step its own function.
- platform.h: HdmiLink (down, no monitor, monitor), hdmiMonitor, hdmiBridge with the bridge's clock word and measured sync, and test setters for each; hdmiModes is non-blocking, a fixed table.
- DriverBase: one correctToRgb and correctFrameToRgb for the outputs that carry RGB only; red, green and blue are read where the profile puts them, so a GRB profile is no longer swapped and a white-first one shows its colors, not its white; a plain RGB wiring is decided once per frame and corrects straight into the frame; sizeLightScratch reports a shortage on the status.
- stop_signal.h: SIGTERM stops the desktop cleanly through one persistent handler, so a second signal does not cut the stop short.
- ButtonService: a press with nothing to report keeps the status, such as a restore's warning, rather than clearing it.
- SystemModule: the flash readout says its clock where known, since Teensy reports none.

**Light domain**
- HdmiDriver: a monitor readout (name, preferred size, a mode it does not list) and a bridge readout with a guide on reading it; the status names a bridge that did not come up, no monitor, and a mode the monitor does not list; a compact card text.
- platform_esp32_hdmi.cpp: the EDID read over DDC, published through a seqlock whose reader fences before its second count; hot-plug polling with retries that reset when the link drops; the bridge's DDS and input sync read back; hdmiClose releases the task, panel, frame, PPA client and PHY LDO, and keeps them while a bring-up outlives its 5 s wait.
- NdiDriver, HlsDriver, RtspDriver: the shared RGB helper, with the RGB order decided once per frame.
- AudioSpectrumEffect: a sweep color mode drawing GEQ PPA's bars, heights and colors, computed only in that mode; the level bar is as tall as a bar is wide, and a square at its right end flashes red for 100 ms on each onset.

**UI**
- migrate.js: a clone stops on a backup identity file that is not valid JSON or not a settings object, with "nothing was written", so the target keeps its own identity.
- style.css: the fields inside an opened list row line up in the shared label column; only the list's own label hugs its text.

**Scripts/MoonDeck**
- run_live_scenario: expect_control reads a module's status and enabled too; the controls a scenario set are put back before the snapshot documents, which hold every value of their tree.
- discord_reader: a failed download removes its partial file and folder.
- release.yml: a pages_only dispatch rebuilds Pages from the published releases without re-releasing a tag; 15-release.yaml names it.
- check_docgen: two comments no longer mention the removed appendix total.

**Tests**
- unit_edid: base block, extension, bad checksum, no block.
- unit_HdmiDriver: link states, the EDID and bridge readouts, and a white-first and a GRB profile through one helper (the GRB case failed before the fix: 20, 10, 30).
- unit_AudioSpectrumEffect: new, GEQ PPA's geometry, the level bar's height and the red square, on one fixture.
- unit_stop_signal: two SIGTERMs, both seen.
- unit_ButtonService: a restore warning survives the first settled poll.
- backup-bundle.test: a clone refuses a non-object or invalid identity file.
- scenario_HdmiDriver_shows_the_layer_on_the_monitor: live, on a board: output up, EDID read, resize, mode change, disable and enable, delete and add.

**Docs/CI**
- documentation-standards.md, MoonDeck.md: the appendix total the docgen check no longer measures is gone from both.
- The audio plan's backlog holds Troy's band definition, for comparing the two engines.
- help.json regenerated; docgen, code and repo-health counts recorded.
- Flash: P4 rev3 +4.2 KB, P4 rev1 +4.0 KB, S3 +0.5 KB, desktop +0.2 KB.
- Scenarios skipped: the touched modules have no in-process scenario, and the HDMI one runs live only.

**Reviews**
- Reviewer: GRB profiles swapped red and green on the RGB-only outputs; fixed, with a test.
- Reviewer: the EDID reader could pass a torn copy, its acquire on the second load ordering nothing before it; fixed with the textbook fence.
- Reviewer: a close after a bring-up outlived the 5 s wait freed what the task still used; fixed, close keeps them until the task exits.
- Reviewer: EDID retries spent before a link drop were not reset; fixed.
- Reviewer: the sweep colors were computed in every color mode; fixed, sweep mode only.
- Reviewer: a torn monitor read could flicker the status line; skipped, the status rewrite reads the monitor again.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the ButtonService warning, the SystemModule flash text, the migrate.js identity file and the Discord reader's partial download; done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the docs still described the removed appendix ratchet; done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the commit process names a missing desktop build script; skipped, moondeck/build/build_desktop.py exists.

The HDMI driver now drives a real screen on desktop machines: a Raspberry Pi or any Linux box's HDMI port without a desktop, and a second display on a Mac or a Windows PC, in modes up to 4K, with hot-plug and the monitor's EDID. The status names the mode the display actually runs, and the Picture service names the mode the HDMI grabber streams.

KPI: 256lights | Desktop:2266KB | tick:8/8/8/2/8/6/269/8/7/11us(FPS:125000/125000/125000/500000/125000/166666/3717/125000/142857/90909) | ESP32:2182KB | src:353(90847) | test:266(62156) | functions-over:345
Commit: src +1349/-116 lines | test +62/-7 lines | duplicated lines 3217 -> 3217 (+0)

**Core**
- One desktop output loop (platform_desktop_hdmi.cpp) over a per-platform screen (screen.h): hot-plug polled once a second, the frame scaled nearest-neighbor with fit or stretch, the HDMI stand-in moved here out of platform_desktop.cpp.
- Linux: DRM/KMS through the kernel's uapi ioctls, no libdrm: the first connected HDMI connector, dumb buffers flipped on the vertical blank, the EDID from the connector property; tested on a Raspberry Pi 5 with an LG ultrawide, hot-plug and 4K included.
- macOS: an AppKit window on a non-main display (platform_desktop_hdmi_mac.mm, Apple clang only), its mode set and restored through Core Graphics, the EDID from the I/O registry; main_desktop.cpp runs MoonLight's loop on a thread so the main thread serves AppKit (main_thread.h).
- Windows: a borderless window on a non-primary monitor drawn with GDI, a temporary ChangeDisplaySettingsEx, the EDID through SetupAPI; compile-checked with mingw-w64, not yet run on a PC.
- hdmi_handover.h: the frame slot and a seqlock, one home for the ESP32-P4 and desktop backends.
- hdmiActiveMode in the seam: the mode the display runs; hasHdmiBridge: the bridge readout only where a bridge reads back.
- edid.h knows the CEA 4K codes (VIC 93 to 97).
- VideoCaptureStats carries the grabber's negotiated mode, ESP32 and desktop stand-in.
- stop_signal.h: [[maybe_unused]] instead of (void) on a volatile reference, which GCC rejects (found by the Windows cross-check).

**Light domain**
- HdmiDriver: the status names the running mode, orange with "(no WxH)" when the display lacks the chosen size; platform-neutral failure wording; the bridge readout hidden without a bridge; 8 desktop modes up to 3840x2160.
- PictureService: "live, 360 x 180 from 640x480 at 6 fps", verified on the grabber P4.

**Tests**
- HdmiDriver: the running mode and its warning, the hidden readout; unit_platform_hdmi.cpp: the desktop's modes up to 4K; unit_edid: VIC 97; unit_PictureService: the grabber's mode in the status.
- The unit tests' and the scenario runner's mains force the HDMI stand-in, so no test drives a real screen.
- scenario_HdmiDriver pins mode 2 in its fixture; it passes live on the Pi.

**Docs/CI**
- installing-on-linux.md and MoonWalk's unit step: HDMI out, the video group, --device /dev/dri for Docker; the source-build path fixed to build/linux/MoonLight.
- The driver's guide and help.json; a new PictureService card image.
- CMake: the .mm on Apple clang with the code check's diag launcher; user32, gdi32 and setupapi on Windows; AppKit, Core Graphics, Core Animation and IOKit on macOS.

**Reviews**
- Reviewer: help.json stale against the header: done, regenerated.
- Reviewer: the prose count rose by 2: done, British "neighbour" in two comments.
- Reviewer: the .mm file sits outside the code gates: done, its compiler findings now counted through the diag launcher; lizard and docgen stay C++, said in the file's lead.
- Reviewer: a reboot on macOS could destroy the window state while the main queue still ran a block on it: done, the state is never destroyed and the main thread serves until MoonLight's loop returned.
- Reviewer: macOS reported points, not pixels, for a HiDPI fallback: done, the mode's pixel size.
- Reviewer: the .mm breaks the GCC build on macOS: done, built on Apple clang only, other builds get a screen-less backend; build_desktop.py --gcc passes.
- Reviewer: the app thread wrote and the main thread spun on the signal flag: done, an atomic appDone flag; the volatile sig_atomic_t flag shared by all three mains is deferred, a sweep of its own.
- Reviewer: the scenario runner could drive a real screen: done, its main forces the stand-in.
- Reviewer: the help missed the Linux permission case: done, folded into "no HDMI port it may open", the video group documented in installing-on-linux.md.
- Reviewer: a negative sentence in installing-on-linux.md: done; the repeated "no desktop" wording accepted, as the Docker table row stands alone.
- Reviewer: closing gave up after 100 ms with a write in flight: done, it waits for the one memcpy.
- Reviewer: one late flip disabled flipping for good: done, a pending flip is awaited and EBUSY retries.
- Reviewer: the status buffer smaller than the new format: done, 48 to 64.
- Reviewer: the mode-list test in the driver file pinned the count: done, moved to unit_platform_hdmi.cpp without the count.

prose.json conflicted, both sides having moved the count; regenerated by check_prose over the merged tree (2012). help.json merged cleanly and regenerates identical.

@ewowi ewowi changed the title HDMI out on the ESP32-P4, restore or clone a backup, and the Olimex P4-PC HDMI out on the ESP32-P4, Linux, macOS and Windows; restore or clone a backup Nov 2, 2026
…th, a sanitizer-clean seqlock

The ESP32-P4's HDMI output no longer allocates on the render tick and frees its frame only once no write is in flight, as the desktop does; a refused output is opened again by itself. CI's thread-sanitizer job builds again, and the branch's merge losses and doc gaps are restored.

KPI: 256lights | Desktop:2282KB | tick:7/10/8/2/8/7/270/7/7/11us(FPS:142857/100000/125000/500000/125000/142857/3703/142857/142857/90909) | src:353(91049) | test:266(62360) | functions-over:345
Commit: src +46/-19 lines | test +3/-11 lines | duplicated lines 3217 -> 3217 (+0)

**Core**
- ESP32 HDMI: the output task grows the frame (growFrame), the tick only asks; hdmiClose claims the frame slot before freeing it.
- hdmi_handover.h: the seqlock reader closes with a read-don't-modify-write (Boehm's reader) instead of atomic_thread_fence, which GCC's -fsanitize=thread rejects; reproduced and verified with GCC 14 on the Pi.
- platform.h forward-declares edid::Monitor instead of including the parser into every unit.

**Light domain**
- HdmiDriver: a refused output asks the scheduler for a prepare every 5 s; the scaling Select's values are named (kScalingFit, kScalingStretch).
- NdiDriver: release() chains to DriverBase::release(), so a disabled NDI driver frees its staging.
- EffectBase.h carries <algorithm>, AudioSpectrumEffect drops its second include.

**Tests**
- unit_ModuleContract: NdiDriver's two exemption rows removed, the lists only shrink.
- unit_stop_signal gets its @module tag; test_check_docgen loses the test of the removed appendix filter.
- The HDMI live scenario passes on the Olimex P4-PC (board B) with the ESP32 fixes flashed.

**Scripts/MoonDeck**
- check_docgen: the appendix-total filter goes; the committed baseline no longer carries that row.

**Docs/CI**
- panel-cards.md: three of #230's lines the merge of main had dropped are back (specialized, the 5A-75B or 5A-75E row, the HUB75 refresh rates link).
- The platform page names RTSP and HDMI; the links to #218 say #218.
- The ArtPoll discovery card states the send retries (Project card, mirror regenerated).
- .coderabbit.yaml filters generated files, plans and images, so a PR's review fits CodeRabbit's 100-file limit.
- help.json regenerated; the prose count falls to 2011.
- Performance: Layers_stack_and_blend_live reads 270 us against 163 in main's last KPI (9302c9c); today's main measures the same as this branch (295-297 us on both, three runs each), so main moved in merges that recorded no KPI.

**Reviews**
- Reviewer: the ESP32 hdmiWrite allocates on the tick: done, the task grows it.
- Reviewer: the ESP32 hdmiClose frees the frame without the slot: done, claimUnlessWriting.
- Reviewer: the merge of main lost #230's link on panel-cards.md: done, with two more lost lines found and restored.
- Reviewer: the LEDVision how-to sits on a reference page, not in MoonWalk: accepted, the product owner's decision that MoonWalk describes MoonLight's own processes.
- Reviewer: NdiDriver::release skips the base: done.
- Reviewer: bare 0 and 1 for the scaling Select: done.
- Reviewer: "specialised": done.
- Reviewer: the platform page lacks HDMI: done.
- Reviewer: a refused ESP32 open leaves a sticky wrong error: done, retried every 5 s; untested, the unit bench has no scheduler.
- Reviewer: unit_stop_signal has no @module: done.
- Reviewer: <algorithm> as a second include: done.
- Reviewer: the default mode is positional and kMaxModes equals the desktop's count: skipped, the unit test pins index 2 on both tables and a ninth mode is when kMaxModes grows.
- Reviewer: the bridge control exists where no bridge reads back: skipped, the desktop stand-in tests the readout the ESP32 shows.
- Reviewer: platform.h includes the EDID parser: done; moving mm::edid under mm::platform skipped, taste.
- Reviewer: links to #218 named after items: done.
- Reviewer: a dead appendix filter in check_docgen: done.
- Reviewer: eight topics on one branch: skipped, breadth without coupling on the product owner's integration branch.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the ArtPoll card overstated what a failed send costs: done, card text approved by the product owner.
- CodeRabbit (#222): manual MoonWalk steps described as recorded: skipped, the page already narrows it to script steps.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the Discord reader skips archived threads: skipped, it already pages the archived public threads.
- CI: the thread-sanitizer job fails on the seqlock's fence: done.

Apply the cleanup order to secondary boards too.

If apply_state changes a secondary board's module and set_control then writes it, _remember_control can save the scenario's value. Secondary-board cleanup applies the original snapshot and then writes that scenario value over it. Restore saved controls before snapshots on secondary boards, as home cleanup now does. In the secondary-board cleanup flow, call _restore_controls with b_prior before
applying board_snapshots[b] through bc.patch; this ensures saved original
controls are restored after scenario-written values. Preserve the existing
snapshot restoration and warning behavior, and leave the home-board cleanup

- **A light list carries no positions:** the layout places it, on 1D, 2D and 3D layouts alike, numbering its lights as the xLights model does.
- **A picture reaches a 3D layout by projection:** each light samples the picture at its position seen along one axis, the planar projection media servers use.
- **A volume would be the native 3D stream:** a frame per depth slice, copied straight into a 3D layer. No source delivers one yet.
- **The P4's hardware video codec encodes H.264 but does not decode it**; its JPEG codec works both ways. So video arrives as MJPEG from a grabber, raw from a camera, or baked in the browser, and leaves through the H.264 encoder HLS drives. The Olimex ESP32-P4-PC carries every piece on one board: HDMI and MIPI-DSI out, a MIPI-CSI connector, four USB host ports, a microSD slot, Ethernet with PoE and 32 MB of PSRAM.

Clarify the HLS clause.

the H.264 encoder HLS drives is ungrammatical and makes the relationship unclear. State that the hardware encoder produces H.264 for HLS.

Update the RMT allocation-failure description.

RmtLedDriver allocates a wire-byte buffer sized to the transmitted window. Allocation failure sets an error status. On classic ESP32, the RMT refill expands those bytes into symbols during transmission. The row no longer describes the current behavior, and its backlog text should be updated.

Stop fetching when read_messages reaches limit.

For a busy channel, _messages fetches and stores every message in the time window before this slice keeps only limit. Discord returns pages newest first, so the limited read can stop after collecting enough in-window messages. This reduces requests and memory use when an agent asks for a small result. (github.com)

Give successful attachment downloads a cleanup lifecycle.

Each successful call creates a new directory and retains up to 25 MB in it. Neither fetch_attachment nor the exposed tools remove successful downloads. Repeated agent reads therefore accumulate files across server sessions and can fill the host disk. Keep returned paths available for reading, but add a retention limit or cleanup mechanism for completed downloads.

Update fetch_attachment to manage the lifecycle of successfully downloaded
files: retain returned paths long enough for callers to read them, then apply a
bounded retention or cleanup mechanism so downloads do not accumulate
indefinitely across server sessions. Ensure cleanup covers completed downloads
without removing a file before its caller can use it.

Report the flash clock on classic ESP32 and S3.

ESP-IDF v6.1 does not define CONFIG_ESPTOOLPY_FLASHFREQ_VAL for these targets. This branch therefore always omits their clock, even when a frequency is configured. Derive the value from their CONFIG_ESPTOOLPY_FLASHFREQ_* choice as well. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Move keyboard focus into the restore-choice prompt.

When the file picker closes, this overlay appears without moving focus. Keyboard users can tab through background File Manager controls before reaching Restore, Clone, or Cancel. Use a native modal dialog, as the file editor does, and focus the first choice when it opens.

Keep the target's Ethernet hardware settings during clone.

IDENTITY keeps only the Ethernet IP fields from the target. A clone copies ethBoard, ethType, and the PHY and SPI pin fields from the backup. On boot, restored ethBoard and pin values reach the interface. They are not reseeded from the target's device model. A backup from a different board can therefore change the target's PHY type or pin map. On an Ethernet-only target, the interface can fail to come up after restart.

Add these hardware fields to the target-kept identity, so a clone keeps the target's Ethernet wiring. The existing clone test in test/js/backup-bundle.test.mjs asserts that the backup's ethType survives a clone. That assertion encodes the current behavior and must change with this fix.

Reject invalid target identity content before cloning.

A target-file response can contain short or malformed JSON even when the HTTP read succeeds. Line 562 treats a parse failure as an absent target file. The following loop then removes the backup's identity fields and writes the result. For a valid target file returned short, this can replace its saved name or network settings instead of retaining them. Reject malformed target content before any write; reserve the absent-file behavior for the explicit 404 path.

Update the target-file parsing flow in the migration logic so a JSON parse
failure is rejected before any clone or write occurs, rather than leaving target
unset. Preserve absent-file handling only for the explicit 404 path, and retain
existing behavior for valid target JSON.

Test the streamed attachment limit.

This test covers an oversized Content-Length, but the size check in the read loop also handles responses without that header. Add a small fake stream that crosses a patched size limit. Assert that fetch_attachment raises and removes its partial file and directory.

As per coding guidelines, “Every behavior is pinned by tests whose descriptions read as functional documentation.”

… wiring, the restore prompt takes focus

A clone now keeps the target's Ethernet board, PHY and pins, and stops before writing when the target's own settings read back broken. The restore prompt is a modal dialog that holds the keyboard focus, the Olimex P4-PC lists HDMI as supported, and the S3 and classic ESP32 name their flash clock.

KPI: not collected for this commit, which changes no tick path (UI, docs, the Discord reader, a Windows thread call and a flash-clock string); da4337e carries the last.

**Core**
- Windows HDMI: the DPI awareness is set on the output thread, which sizes and creates the window, rather than on the opening thread.
- ESP32: the flash clock in the flash-mode readout derives from the Kconfig choice on the classic ESP32 and the S3, where IDF 6.1 defines no CONFIG_ESPTOOLPY_FLASHFREQ_VAL.

**UI**
- Clone keeps the target's Ethernet wiring (ethBoard, ethType, PHY address, reset, MDC, MDIO, clock and SPI pins), since a backup from other hardware would leave an Ethernet-only target unreachable.
- Clone refuses a target identity file that read but does not parse, so a short read never drops what the device holds.
- The restore-or-clone prompt is a native modal dialog: focus starts on restore, Tab stays in it, Escape cancels; proven in headless Chromium against the desktop app.
- Installer: HDMI is a supported capability (schema and the capability map), and the Olimex ESP32-P4-PC lists it as supported, not planned.

**Scripts/MoonDeck**
- Discord reader: downloads live under one folder that keeps the newest 20; a limited read stops paging once it holds enough.

**Tests**
- JS: the clone keeps the target's Ethernet wiring, a broken target file stops the clone, the setting a clone carries over is now mDNS.
- Python: an attachment without a size is refused once it streams past the limit and leaves nothing; downloads keep the newest few; a limited read stops paging.

**Docs/CI**
- backup-and-restore.md, MoonWalk's restore step and the prompt name the Ethernet wiring a clone keeps.
- performance.md: the RMT row describes its allocation and error status.
- streams.md: the HLS clause reworded, the dated check removed.

**Reviews**
- CodeRabbit (#222): a clone copies the backup's Ethernet hardware settings: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): a malformed target identity file is treated as absent: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): successful attachment downloads accumulate: done, a retention of 20.
- CodeRabbit (#222): DPI awareness set on the wrong thread: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the flash clock is never shown on the classic ESP32 and S3: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the restore prompt does not take keyboard focus: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): HDMI listed as planned for the Olimex P4-PC: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the RMT row describes a removed behavior: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): the HLS clause in streams.md: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): a dated verification note in streams.md: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): read_messages fetches the whole window before its limit: done.
- CodeRabbit (#222): no test for the streamed attachment limit: done.
