94-118: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winReuse the shared
retrohelpers instead of keeping second copies inhead_unit.rs.
head_unit.rsrepeats code thatretro/mod.rsalready exports:
resample(the same asretro::resample, plus an equal-length shortcut)lerp,rgbandRgbfold_stereo, which matchesretro::Audio::monoCanvasand the Braille packing inCanvas::blit, which matchretro::DotsandCells::dotsThe copies have already started to differ.
Canvas::blitbreaks color ties by count only.Cells::dotsbreaks ties toward the brighter color. If the Braille packing changes later, the two styles will drift further apart.Import
retro::{lerp, rgb, resample, Rgb}and useAudio::monofor the fold. KeepCanvasonly if the glass-background fill needs it. You can do this by adding an optional background argument toCells::dots.Also applies to: 146-180, 433-497

Review comment at @src/tui/ui/head_unit.rs around lines 94 - 118: Replace the duplicated helpers in the head-unit rendering path with the shared retro implementations: import and use retro::lerp, rgb, resample, and Rgb; use Audio::mono instead of fold_stereo; and use retro::Dots/Cells::dots instead of the local Canvas and Braille packing, adding an optional background argument to Cells::dots only if needed for the glass-background fill. Remove the redundant local implementations while preserving existing rendering behavior, including brighter-color tie breaking.

existing dark analysis_bar_text color, then update both LineGauge label render

playbar_progress_text as the foreground.

- Around line 48-50: Update the cassette height calculation in the cassette
rendering layout so wh is capped at the space above the LED rows, using the
existing minimum height of 6. Preserve the current width and centering
calculations, and ensure the shell does not overlap the meter block for short
areas.
- Around line 66-67: Replace the single State field reel_angle with reel_angles:
[f32; 2], and update spin to advance each reel independently using its scaled
rate, wrapping each angle at 60 degrees before adding the reel offset. Remove
the shared wrapped-angle update and ensure all reel-angle accesses use the
per-reel array.
Review comments at @src/tui/ui/retro/rack_eq.rs:
- Around line 92-98: Update the ladder rendering loop in the rack EQ drawing
logic to derive the band spacing from ww, using the available half-width and
clamping the step between 3 and 5 columns. Replace the fixed 5-column multiplier
in the band x-coordinate calculation with this computed step so both L and R
ladders remain separated at narrow widths.

head_unit.rs copies resample, lerp, rgb and the Braille canvas from retro/mod.rs, and the two have already drifted (Canvas::blit breaks color ties differently from Cells::dots). Please make Head Unit use the retro helpers. Cells::put also writes one char per cell, so a CJK title in the Cassette label, Winamp title bar or Outrun corner loses every other glyph. Head Unit's set_stringn already handles that. Small one: the doc on cycle_visualizer_style still says Cava and Bar Graph.

204-215: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winRemove the per-cell heap allocation in
Cells::dots.
Vec::with_capacity(2)allocates on the heap for every terminal cell, on every frame. At 300x80 that is 24,000 allocations per frame. At the reported 62 FPS that is about 1.5 million allocations per second. All six retro styles and the Head Unit stage callCells::dots. A Braille cell has at most 8 dots, so a fixed-size array on the stack is enough.♻️ Proposed change

- Around line 598-607: Update the header title sizing logic around the local
text selection and centering width calculation to use unicode display width via
the existing unicode-width dependency instead of chars().count(). Uppercase the
title once, measure spaced and uppercase text with UnicodeWidthStr, truncate
without exceeding room by accumulating UnicodeWidthChar widths, and use the
resulting display width for centering so wide characters do not overlap the DHE
chip.

CodeRabbit flags the bundled theme as out of scope, happy to split it if you'd prefer. |
It's fine you can ignore it, will take a proper look tomorrow |
Summary
Adds several new retro visualizer styles and a personal gruvbox based theme. Closes #901
Part of #3 (adds the Gruvbox Cove preset)
Testing
Tested on Windows 11. The new visualizer and theme tests are part of both test runs (
tui::ui::head_unit::tests::*,tui::ui::retro::tests::*,core::theme::tests::*). Thesession_plays is never usedwarning from the test builds comes from existing code that only the GUI build calls, not from this change.Additional notes
Also bundles my personal Gruvbox-cove preset, happy to split it out.
