Relates to #370. This PR closes nothing.

Summary

This PR corrects the multi-modal losses of #370 before 0.9.0 releases them, and it states the limits of the particle and parity frontends in their docstrings and docs pages.

  • CrossModalLoss (named CrossModalCycleLoss in Add MultiModalSymplecticAutoencoder, multimodal losses, and HRedSys reference shift and VJP #370) drops its cycle term ‖encode(b, decode(b, z_a)) − z_a‖². That term is not zero by construction: with a weight-tied core it is zero for a right-invertible frontend such as BilinearStiefelLayer, and it was non-zero in every draw for CanonicalSortLayer(4, 1) and CanonicalSlotLayer(3, 2, 2). The cross-reconstruction error β_cross ‖decode(b, z_a) − x_b‖² replaces it, because it depends on the data x_b. The keyword β_cycle = 0.1 becomes β_cross = 1.0, and a passed β_cycle raises Julia's MethodError. A negative or NaN weight raises an ArgumentError. x_a and x_b whose latent states have different sizes raise a DimensionMismatch.
  • Both forms of CharbonnierRelativeLoss evaluate the latent term; the self-reconstruction form uses x̂ = decode(encode(x)), so λ_lat acts in both.
  • IsometricRolloutLoss has no default latent Hamiltonian, and α_H defaults to 0.0, so IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator) has no energy term. α_H > 0 requires H, and the constructor raises an ArgumentError without one. With α_H = 0, the loss takes no H, and a given H raises an ArgumentError, because it would have no effect.
  • The cross term, both Charbonnier forms and the α_rec term recombine a pre-split BilinearStiefelLayer pair (q = F⁺, p = F⁻) into the full field before they compare it with the decoded field. A pre-split pair whose halves have different element types raises an ArgumentError that names both.
  • The docstrings of CanonicalSortLayer, CanonicalSlotLayer, SymmetricSymplecticAutoencoder, BilinearStiefelLayer, LowRankStiefelLayer and MultiModalSymplecticAutoencoder, and the pages symmetric_particle_layers.md and stiefel_layer.md, state these limits: sorting is discontinuous where two particles cross, and it suits systems that keep their particle order; the slot layer is a linear projection for a fixed particle count; the (q, p) of the parity frontends is canonical only for the structure that they declare, not for the Vlasov bracket.
  • A new testset checks HRedSys with a reference state that is not an equilibrium against the unshifted system in shifted coordinates, in both pullback modes and both precisions.
  • A test checks the cross term against a hand-computed dense value on a linear frontend. It also asserts once that the old cycle term is zero on the weight-tied core, with the untied SymplecticAutoencoder as the control where it is not zero.

No release has these names (v0.8.0 has no src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl), so nothing is deprecated. CHANGELOG.md describes these changes in the #370 bullet under [Unreleased].

Review fixes

The review of 44bf1e77 and the decisions on it change the head in three commits:

  • 17b64509: the form of CharbonnierRelativeLoss with an external x̂ recombines a pre-split pair; with α_H = 0, a given H is not stored or called; the DimensionMismatch text names the latent sizes; the parity docstrings say that the linearised bracket gives a {Q, P} that is not the identity and can be singular.
  • a0d19463: the self form of CharbonnierRelativeLoss has the latent term again; a pre-split pair with halves of different element types raises an ArgumentError; α_H defaults to 0.0; CrossModalCycleLoss is renamed CrossModalLoss, and KNOWN_ISSUES.md K41 follows the name and its line citations.
  • e800bdc7: with α_H = 0, a given H raises an ArgumentError that names α_H and H, in place of the silent drop of 17b64509.

test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl passes 373 of 373 at e800bdc7, Julia 1.13.3. The full suite was not run locally on these commits; CI runs it.

The sections Tests, Pre-PR verification, Critic and Decisions below record the head 3cac7daf that the critics judged. They use the name CrossModalCycleLoss and the skip of the self-form latent term as decided then; the Summary describes the head.

Tests

  • Full suite on 3cac7daf, Julia 1.13.3: PASS. 109 testsets, 10731 passed, 2 broken (the two Metal testsets; the run had no GPU), 0 failed, 0 errored.
  • Full suite on 3cac7daf, Julia 1.12.7 (the floor, --check-bounds=yes): PASS, with the same counts.
  • The head 44bf1e77 changes text only after 3cac7daf: one sentence of docs/src/layers/symmetric_particle_layers.md, one sentence of CHANGELOG.md and one test comment.

Not checked locally: the docs build. docs/make.jl could not download the logo through the local network proxy (a TLS error), so the Documentation workflow of this PR is the docs check. test/quality/docs_make_checks_references.jl passes, and the local reference check reports 0 unresolved references.

Pre-PR verification

Fixed: nothing needed a fix. One nit comes from the diff and does not block: the new DimensionMismatch text says "different numbers of samples" for a single snapshot against a batch of one, (2,) against (2, 1).

Unresolved: none.

Pre-existing, adjacent:

  • quality — src/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:297: CrossModalLoss passes its modality as a runtime field, so decode calls the inverse frontend through runtime dispatch over a Union. The return type still infers. main has the same call, and this branch adds no new dispatch (JET.report_opt).

Checked and clean:

  • Correctness: I read the diff and the parity and metric code. The recombined target matches decode with and without metric_factors. The gradient with α_H = 0 and no H is finite. No caller of the removed names is left. The KNOWN_ISSUES line citations match the head.
  • Type piracy: Aqua test_piracies passes with the repository's treat_as_own = [Batch]. The new helpers are all on owned functions.
  • Type stability: code_typed and JET.report_opt on the three losses, with full and pre-split inputs, infer Float64. The one JET report is pre-existing.
  • Allocations: fatou lint finds nothing. The hunks add no avoidable allocating construct.
  • Comments and docstrings near the hunks: present tense, and consistent with the new behaviour. No history phrases outside CHANGELOG.md.
  • JuliaFormatter: the changed .jl files conform.
  • Docs: no jldoctest in the changed pages or docstrings. The new @ref targets are in @docs blocks.

Not checked: the docs build (the Documentation workflow checks it); allocation figures (no claim or assertion to test); the type-stability checks on the 1.12 floor.

Release: no bump needed. The renamed keyword and the new error touch API that no release has.

Unresolved

  • nit — the DimensionMismatch wording above. The check and its message are the decided edge; only the wording is loose for a one-sample batch against a single sample. Fixed in 17b64509.

Two text-only findings of critic 1a are fixed in 44bf1e77: the page sentence "Only :sort and :slot give a permutation-invariant latent state" now carries the distinct-coordinates qualifier, and the CHANGELOG bullet names only the docstrings that state the limits. The other findings of both critics are non-blocking remarks on size and wording.

Known issues added

None. The branch adds no entry to KNOWN_ISSUES.md. It updates the line citations of the existing entry K41 (src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:385, :391, :397 and :254), because the file's line numbers move.

Decisions taken without the user

The user decided three points: the names of #370 go into GML 0.9.0; this PR lands before the 0.9.0 release, so its changes need no deprecation; and clause 1 takes the cross-reconstruction term.

The advisor decided the edges below (advisor, 2026-10-30, medium). Verbatim:

Decided at the edges (advisor, 2026-10-30, medium):

  • β_cross: default and validation. The signature is CrossModalCycleLoss(mod_a, mod_b; β_align = 1.0, β_cross = 1.0). The default equals β_align, because both terms are squared errors of one pair. The old 0.1 weighted a term that was always zero. One check covers both weights: (β_align >= 0 && β_cross >= 0) || throw(ArgumentError("CrossModalCycleLoss requires non-negative weights β_align and β_cross, got β_align = $β_align, β_cross = $β_cross.")). A NaN weight fails >= 0, so the same message refuses it. The struct field is β_cross, and T promotes β_align and β_cross. Tests catch: J4 (the β_cross >= 0 check deleted) is caught by anchored r"^(?:ArgumentError: )?…$" tests of β_cross = -0.1 and β_cross = NaN. A changed default is caught by CrossModalCycleLoss(:particles, :grid).β_cross == 1.0.

  • A passed β_cycle. There is no shim and no special message. The name is unreleased (user, 2026-10-30), so Julia's own MethodError for an unsupported keyword is the behaviour. Tests catch: J9 (β_cycle kept as an ignored keyword) is caught by @test_throws MethodError CrossModalCycleLoss(:particles, :grid; β_cycle = 0.1).

  • The cross term: x_b against decode(b, z_a). _cross_modal_eval returns T(β_align) * _frob_sq_diff(z_a, z_b) + T(β_cross) * _frob_sq_diff(x̂_b, target), where x̂_b = decode(model, ps, mod_b, z_a). Here target is x_b in the form that decode returns for the frontend of mod_b:

    • Particle frontends (CanonicalSortLayer, CanonicalSlotLayer, a Chain of particle layers). x_b is (q, p) of size (d, M) or (d, M, B), or the flat state. decode returns a Vector{T} of length 2Md or a Matrix{T} of size (2Md, B), laid out as [vec(q); vec(p)]. The existing _frob_sq_diff methods already compare these two forms correctly, so target = x_b.
    • BilinearStiefelLayer. decode returns the full field, (Nx, Nv) or (Nx, Nv, B). For an array x_b, target = x_b. For a pre-split pair x_b = (q = F⁺, p = F⁻), target = _parity_recombine(x_b.q, x_b.p). Without this, _frob_sq_diff(::AbstractMatrix, ::NamedTuple{(:q, :p)}) compares vec(F̂) with [vec(F⁺); vec(F⁻)], which is a different layout. A batched pre-split pair has no method at all.
    • LowRankStiefelLayer. x_b = (X, S, V) in 2D or 3D, and decode returns (X̂, Ŝ, V̂) of rank r_eff. FastDLRATraceLoss compares the two and accepts r_eff ≠ r_in, so target = x_b.

The choice of target dispatches on the frontend: one method for (::BilinearStiefelLayer, ::NamedTuple{(:q, :p)}) and an identity fallback. The helper gets a # comment and no docstring.

Before the comparison, a @non_differentiable check runs: size(z_a) == size(z_b) || throw(DimensionMismatch("CrossModalCycleLoss: x_a and x_b hold different numbers of samples: their latent states have sizes $(size(z_a)) and $(size(z_b)).")). Without it, a Vector latent minus a Matrix latent broadcasts without an error, and so does an (Nx, Nv) decode minus an (Nx, Nv, B) field.

Other edges: the _check_eltype ArgumentError for x_a and x_b stays; a shape that the frontend of mod_b refuses raises that frontend's own DimensionMismatch in encode(b, x_b); mod_a === mod_b is allowed.

Tests catch: J5 (the sample-count check deleted) is caught by loss(nn, x_a, F_batch) with a single x_a and an anchored DimensionMismatch pattern. J6 (no recombination) is caught on a BilinearStiefelLayer modality b: loss(nn, x_a, (q = F⁺, p = F⁻)) must equal loss(nn, x_a, F) to 10 eps(T) relative, with F⁺ and F⁻ built in the test from explicit parity matrices. The same comparison runs for a batch.

  • Single, batched and pair forms. All six receivers on main stay, and every one reaches _cross_modal_eval: (model, ps::NamedTuple, x_a, x_b), (model, ps::NetworkParameters, x_a, x_b) and (nn, x_a, x_b), and each of the three with the pair (x_a, x_b). A batch is a sum over its samples, with no division by B, as on main. Tests catch: loss(…, (x_a, x_b)) == loss(…, x_a, x_b) for the three receivers; for B = 3, the batched value equals the sum of the three single-sample values to 10 eps(T) relative (a mutant that averages the batch fails this); @inferred holds on each form; F's Float64 Zygote-against-central-differences test runs with β_cross = 0.2 in place of β_cycle = 0.2.

  • Clause 4: the hand-computed value. The fixture has two BilinearStiefelLayer(4, 4, 2, 1) modalities without metric factors and the linear core WeightTiedSymplecticAutoencoder(4, 2; n_blocks = 1, n_layers = 0, n_ambient_layers = 0, sympnet_upscale = 2).

    • Copy exactly orthonormal leaves into both frontends and into the core weight. Their entries are 0, ±1 and ±1/√2.
    • Draw the data in T at scale 3.7, not a power of 2.
    • The test builds each encoder and decoder as a dense matrix from the leaves and explicit parity matrices. It then computes β_align‖z_a − z_b‖² + β_cross‖x̂_b − x_b‖² and compares to 10 eps(T) relative, for T in REAL_ELTYPES.
    • With β_align = 0, the loss equals the hand-computed cross term. That term is > 1e-2, and the loss changes when x_b changes.
    • The old cycle term is asserted once, computed in the test as ‖encode(b, decode(b, z_a)) − z_a‖. On this fixture it is ≤ 10 eps(T) max(1, ‖z_a‖). On the same frontends with the untied SymplecticAutoencoder(4, 2) core (the control, already used as a multimodal core in the test file) it is > 1e-3 ‖z_a‖.

Tests catch: J1 (the old cycle term restored): the β_align = 0 value then drops to about 0 and no longer depends on x_b.

  • CharbonnierRelativeLoss, self-reconstruction form. Every form without an x̂ — (model, ps, modality, x), (nn, modality, x), (model, ps, x) and (nn, x) — returns only the reconstruction term (√(‖x̂ − x‖² + ε²) − ε) / √(‖x‖² + ε²), with x̂ = decode(m, encode(m, x)). These forms compute no encode(m, x̂), and they compare through the same target as the cross term. λ_lat acts only in the form with an external x̂, where x̂ and x must have the same form. The docstring gives both formulas. It says that the self-form latent term is zero for a weight-tied core with a right-invertible frontend, so the method skips it; for any other core, a caller gets the term by passing x̂ = decode(nn, m, encode(nn, m, x)) to the external form. Tests catch: J7 (the latent term kept in the self form) is caught with the untied SymplecticAutoencoder core and λ_lat = 1: the self-form value must equal the hand-computed reconstruction-only value to 10 eps(T), and the test asserts that the hand-computed latent term is > 1e-3 times that value. F's F_pert test of the external form stays.

  • IsometricRolloutLoss and H. The signature stays IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator; α_lat = 1.0, α_rec = 1.0, α_H = 0.1, H = nothing), and _eval_latent_H(::Nothing, z) is deleted.

    • After the existing weight check, the constructor runs (iszero(α_H) || H !== nothing) || throw(ArgumentError("IsometricRolloutLoss requires a latent Hamiltonian H when α_H > 0, got α_H = $α_H and H = nothing. Pass H, or set α_H = 0.")). So IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator) raises this error. With α_H = 0 and no H, the loop calls no H and the penalty is zero(T).
    • H is a callable H(ẑ) on the latent state as encode and integrator give it: a Vector{T} of length 2n, or a Matrix{T} of size (2n, B) for a batched snapshot. It returns one scalar of type T, one value for a whole batch. Another element type raises the existing ArgumentError, and a non-scalar value fails loudly in abs2.
    • The α_rec term compares through the same target as the cross term.
    • The docstring says that there is no default, and why: a fixed latent energy such as ½‖ẑ‖² is not the system's energy.
    • The weight check runs first, so the existing α_lat = -1.0 test keeps its message. F's test IsometricRolloutLoss(step_id) becomes IsometricRolloutLoss(step_id; H = H_lat).

Tests catch: J2 (the default H restored) is caught by an anchored test of the message for IsometricRolloutLoss(step_id) and for IsometricRolloutLoss(step_id; α_H = 0.1, H = nothing). With α_H = 0 and no H, the value must equal the hand-computed α_lat and α_rec terms to 15 eps(T), and @inferred must hold; a mutant that calls H without condition then raises a MethodError.

  • HRedSys away from the fixed point (clause 5). A new testset goes in test/reduced_system/reference_shift_and_vjp.jl, after the existing ones, with its own seed and for T in REAL_ELTYPES, mode in (:jacobian, :vjp).

    • Setup. N = 6, n = 2, and the network WeightTiedSymplecticAutoencoder(12, 4; n_blocks = 1, n_layers = 1, n_ambient_layers = 0, sympnet_upscale = 2). The Hamiltonian is H(q, p) = ½‖p‖² + ½‖q‖² + ¼Σ qᵢ⁴, centred at the origin. q_ref and p_ref are randn(rng, T, N). The test asserts ‖(p_ref, q_ref .+ q_ref.^3)‖ ≥ 0.1, so z_ref is not an equilibrium. ics = z_ref + 0.3 randn.
    • System under test. HRedSys(…, v, f, h, (0, 1), 0.05, ics; integrator = ImplicitMidpoint(), q_ref, p_ref, pullback_mode = mode), which runs 20 steps.
    • Oracle. An HRedSys without q_ref and p_ref, with the translated fields v̂(v, t, y_q, y_p, ps) = v(v, t, y_q .+ q_ref, y_p .+ p_ref, ps) (f̂ and ĥ in the same way) and ics = (q − q_ref, p − p_ref).
    • Assertions, at every step: ‖ξ_k − ξ̂_k‖ ≤ 50 eps(T) max(1, ‖ξ̂_k‖); decode(rs, ξ_k) (vector form) matches decoder(nn)(ξ̂_k) .+ z_ref to the same bound; rs.h_reduced matches rs_oracle.h_reduced to the same bound.
    • Tolerance. The two systems do the same floating-point operations, so they differ by round-off at most. If a measurement exceeds the bound, the builder reports it and does not widen it.
    • Non-vacuity. rs.v_reduced at ξ_0 differs from build_v_reduced(v, f, decoder(nn)) without a reference by > 1e-3 relative.

Tests catch: J3a: _add_ref! deleted in evaluate_vf_and_compute_∇Ψ (caught in both modes, because Newton's dual states take the Jacobian path even under :vjp). J3b: _add_ref! deleted in evaluate_vf_and_vjp, caught under :vjp. J3c: the shift dropped in decode(rs, ::AbstractVector). J3d: the shift dropped in build_h_reduced.

  • Docstrings and docs pages (clause 6). GML cites the notes nowhere, and its bibliography does not hold them, so J adds no citation of the notes and states each limit in plain words; "every citation names a \label" then holds because there are none. The sentences on origin/main (7c92ea85) and what replaces each:

    1. docs/src/layers/symmetric_particle_layers.md:14, "The sorting and slot frontends are S_M-invariant; …", becomes "invariant under a relabelling of particles with distinct coordinates along the sorting axis", followed by the order sentence of item 4.
    2. docs/src/layers/symmetric_particle_layers.md:39 and src/layers/canonical_slot_layer.jl:52, "sorts the M - 1 relative modes canonically by descending squared phase-space norm": the word "canonically" goes. Added: the particles are already sorted, so this second sort removes no symmetry, and it makes the output discontinuous where two relative-mode norms cross.
    3. src/layers/canonical_slot_layer.jl:44 and :184, "collective canonical slots", becomes "canonical slots". The CanonicalSlotLayer docstring and the page add: the layer is a linear projection of sorted states for a fixed particle count M; it takes no variable particle count and has no Löwdin-orthogonalised affinity slots.
    4. The order sentence goes into CanonicalSortLayer (src/layers/canonical_sort_layer.jl:35), CanonicalSlotLayer, SymmetricSymplecticAutoencoder (src/architectures/symmetric_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:8) and page line 14: sorting is discontinuous in p where two particles cross along the sorting axis; the Jacobian identity holds only away from those crossings; :sort and :slot suit systems that keep their particle order, not a collisionless plasma, whose sorted snapshots are not low-rank.
    5. docs/src/layers/stiefel_layer.md:3–6, "provide canonical velocity-parity Stiefel frontends", becomes "provide velocity-parity Stiefel frontends". A scope sentence follows: their (q, p) is canonical only for the structure 𝕁 that they declare on the parity coordinates; a frontend that is linear in f is not a Poisson map for the Vlasov bracket; with L²-orthonormal even and odd bases, the bracket linearised at f_0 gives a singular {Q, P}, not the identity. The same scope sentence goes into the BilinearStiefelLayer docstring (bilinear_stiefel_layer.jl:6) and the LowRankStiefelLayer docstring (low_rank_stiefel_layer.jl:8, 22).
    6. src/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:32, "to a symplectic or Poisson frontend layer whose canonical output dimension equals", becomes "to a frontend layer whose output dimension equals". Added: the latent state is canonical for the structure that each frontend declares; for the two parity frontends that structure is 𝕁 on the parity coordinates, not the Vlasov bracket.
    7. src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl: :55–67, the Charbonnier docstring, as decided above; :163, "default nothing, which uses the canonical quadratic energy", as decided above; :276–288, the CrossModalCycleLoss docstring, which states clause 1's formula, says that the pair is one physical state in two modalities, and says that the term is not symmetric in a and b.
    8. CHANGELOG.md:153, the F bullet under [Unreleased]: its β_cycle = 0.1, cycle formula and H = nothing become J's behaviour, because 0.9.0 never released them. A new J bullet says what changed against PR Add MultiModalSymplecticAutoencoder, multimodal losses, and HRedSys reference shift and VJP #370: the cross term replaces the cycle term, the self-form latent term is skipped, α_H > 0 requires H, a pre-split field is recombined, the sample-count check is new, and the docstrings state the limits of D, E and F. The D and E bullets (:149, :151) describe code that J does not change, and they stay.

The reference-state claim needs no change: neither the HRedSys docstring (reduced_system.jl:92) nor docs/src/ claims an energy match; the critic checks this with a grep for energy.

Three points of the head differ from the edges as the advisor wrote them. The plan records each as a correction, and no clause changes:

  • J3a is caught by the :jacobian rows of the new HRedSys testset only, not in both modes. Under :vjp, the Jacobian path feeds only Newton's Jacobian, so a wrong Jacobian changes the iteration count and not the converged step. J3b is caught by the :vjp rows. Every named mutant is caught.
  • The untied control of clause 4 uses the keywords of the test file's existing untied core (one block, one layer each). SymplecticAutoencoder(4, 2) with its default keywords raises "AssertionError: The number of decoder blocks is too big!".
  • The DimensionMismatch of the sample-count check also fires for a one-sample batch x_a of size (d, M, 1) against a single x_b, although both hold one sample. The check is the decided edge; only its wording is loose.

Every clause of the part is met as written, except clause 7's docs build, which this PR's Documentation workflow checks.

…ity frontends

CrossModalCycleLoss replaces its cycle term, which is zero by construction
for a weight-tied core with a right-invertible frontend, by the
cross-reconstruction error decode(b, z_a) - x_b (beta_cycle becomes
beta_cross = 1.0), recombines a pre-split parity pair before the
comparison, and raises a DimensionMismatch for x_a and x_b with different
numbers of samples. The self-reconstruction forms of
CharbonnierRelativeLoss skip the latent term. IsometricRolloutLoss has no
default latent Hamiltonian: alpha_H > 0 requires H. The docstrings and two
docs pages state the limits of the sorting, slot and parity frontends, and
a new testset checks HRedSys with a reference that is not an equilibrium.

The page's SymmetricSymplecticAutoencoder paragraph states the same
distinct-coordinates qualifier as its opening paragraph. The CHANGELOG
bullet names only the docstrings that state the frontends' limits, and a
test comment says exactly when Docs.doc has no method.

For a `Float64` network, a two-dimensional pre-split input can have `Float64`
`q` and `Float32` `p`. The bilinear encoder accepts that input, but
`_parity_recombine` requires both arrays to have the same element type. The
external loss therefore throws a `MethodError`.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Loss Updates

    • Cross-modal loss now combines latent alignment with directional cross-reconstruction instead of a cycle-consistency term. Its weight is β_cross, defaulting to 1.0.
    • Isometric rollout loss requires a Hamiltonian when the energy term is enabled; it can be omitted when that term is disabled.
    • Self-reconstruction with CharbonnierRelativeLoss computes reconstruction loss without latent consistency; external-target reconstruction retains the latent term.
    • Reconstruction comparisons use decoded full fields, and losses validate weights and input compatibility.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified particle-crossing discontinuities and when sorting and slot frontends are suitable.
    • Clarified that Stiefel frontend coordinates are canonical for their declared structure, not necessarily for the Vlasov bracket.

Multimodal reconstruction, rollout, and cross-modal loss behavior changed. Frontend documentation now qualifies canonical structures and sorting properties. The test suite adds reduced-system reference-shift coverage.

Changes: Multimodal loss behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reconstruction targets and Charbonnier loss
src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl, test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl, CHANGELOG.md
Parity-split fields are recombined for reconstruction comparisons. The encode-decode CharbonnierRelativeLoss form computes reconstruction loss without a latent term. The external-target form retains latent consistency.
Explicit Hamiltonian in rollout loss
src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl, test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl, KNOWN_ISSUES.md
IsometricRolloutLoss requires H when α_H > 0. When α_H = 0, H can be nothing, and the loss skips energy evaluations.
Cross-modal reconstruction
src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl, test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl, CHANGELOG.md
CrossModalCycleLoss replaces latent cycle consistency with cross-reconstruction into mod_b. It uses β_cross with a default of 1.0 and checks encoded-state sizes.

Frontend documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stiefel frontend structure
docs/src/layers/stiefel_layer.md, src/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl, src/layers/bilinear_stiefel_layer.jl, src/layers/low_rank_stiefel_layer.jl, CHANGELOG.md
Documentation limits canonical coordinates to the declared parity-coordinate structure. It states that the described linear frontends are not Poisson maps for the Vlasov bracket.
Sorting and slot frontend limits
docs/src/layers/symmetric_particle_layers.md, src/architectures/symmetric_symplectic_autoencoder.jl, src/layers/canonical_slot_layer.jl, src/layers/canonical_sort_layer.jl
Documentation describes sorting and relative-mode norm discontinuities, distinct-coordinate conditions, fixed particle count, and stated system suitability.

Reference-shift validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Non-equilibrium reference-shift test
test/reduced_system/reference_shift_and_vjp.jl
A new test compares shifted and translated unshifted reduced trajectories, decoded states, and reduced Hamiltonians across element types and pullback modes.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two changes: correcting the multi-modal losses and correcting the claims of the particle and parity frontends. The changeset matches both. It changes CrossModalCycleLoss, CharbonnierRelativeLoss and IsometricRolloutLoss, and it updates the docstrings and docs pages for the particle and parity frontends. The title is specific, but it is long at 82 characters and does not name the main behaviour change, which is the replacement of the cycle term with a cross-reconstruction term.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description directly matches the changeset. It explains the multi-modal loss corrections, validation and API changes, added tests, frontend documentation limits, changelog updates, and reference-state coverage.

JuliaGNI/GeometricMachineLearning.jl PR #371 — Correct the multi-modal losses and the claims of the particle and parity frontends

Verdict: request changes (posted as a comment, because the reviewing account is the PR author)
Reviewed: 44bf1e77b6c8a9db505d3ffb2b35b229e4a359b7
CI: the three red jobs fail the same way on main at 7c92ea85 (run 41114599304, four hours earlier), and none of them reached the tests:

  • Downgrade - ubuntu-latest: a resolver failure. forcedeps check failed: Zygote resolved to 0.7.5 but lower bound is 0.7.0, the same for ChainRulesCore 1.25.1 / 1.0.0, NNlib 0.9.30 / 0.8.0 and KernelAbstractions 0.9.38 / 0.9.0. The four lines are the same in the main job. The PR does not touch Project.toml, test/Project.toml or .github/. It is not attributable to this diff.
  • Julia pre and Julia nightly: a precompile failure. UndefVarError: libLLVMExtra not defined in LLVM.API (LLVM 9.13.2, LLVMExtra_jll 0.0.47), then Metal (skipped, GPUCompiler failed to precompile). The same error is in both main jobs. This gives no test signal.
  • All Julia 1 and Julia min jobs, Metal, Documentation, Doctests and Scripts are green.

Findings

# severity file:line claim evidence
1 correctness-risk src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:149-150, :87; CHANGELOG.md:157 The premise of the change is false for the particle frontends. The CHANGELOG says the PR removes "the terms that are zero by construction". On a weight-tied core, ‖encode(b, decode(b, z)) − z‖ is not zero for CanonicalSortLayer or CanonicalSlotLayer with more than one slot, because the decoder does not map into the sorted chamber. The self forms of CharbonnierRelativeLoss drop the latent term for every core and every frontend, so λ_lat has no effect exactly where the term is non-zero. CodeRabbit's comment on :87 is correct, and this goes further than it. The simplest fix is to keep main's latent term in the self form (two lines): it is exactly zero where the premise holds. The other fix is to make the skip dispatch on a right-invertible frontend together with a weight-tied core. Probe P1 (weight-tied core 8→4, MersenneTwister(11), 200 random states each). The relative cycle term is non-zero in 200 of 200 draws for CanonicalSortLayer(4, 1) (median 0.025, max 1.13). It is non-zero in 200 of 200 for CanonicalSlotLayer(3, 2, 2) (median 0.080, max 1.01). It is ≤ 5.4e-16 for CanonicalSlotLayer(4, 4, 1). Probe P1b, λ_lat = 1, slot frontend: the self form gives 1.116, 0.906, 0.881, 1.079, and the external form with x̂ = decode(encode(x)) gives 1.153, 0.924, 0.914, 1.110. The repository states the same at src/architectures/symmetric_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:11: right-inversion holds for :sort and :slot "for ξ whose decoded state lies in the canonical chamber … the decoder does not map into this chamber in general". The test at test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:834-841 checks the zero-cycle claim on BilinearStiefelLayer only.
2 correctness-risk CHANGELOG.md:157; PR body For the same reason, the rationale of CrossModalCycleLoss is false when mod_b is :sort or :slot: the cycle term carried a non-zero signal there. Replacing it with the cross term is a design decision and can stay. The text must not say that the removed term was zero: drop "which is zero for a weight-tied core with a right-invertible frontend", or limit it to the parity frontends. P1 above
3 correctness-risk src/layers/bilinear_stiefel_layer.jl:33-36, src/layers/low_rank_stiefel_layer.jl:27-30, docs/src/layers/stiefel_layer.md:8-11 "with L²-orthonormal even and odd bases, the bracket linearised at f₀ gives a singular {Q, P}" is false as a general statement. The bracket is {Q_i, P_j} = ∫ f₀ [φe_i, φo_j]. For an x-independent f₀(v) and periodic x this factorises as M ⊗ G, with M = Φxᵀ D_x Φx antisymmetric. So it is singular for odd m_x and generically regular for even m_x. "Depends on f and is not the identity" holds; "singular" does not. Probe P3: Maxwellian f₀, Nx = Nv = 32, central differences, random orthonormal Φx and Φv, m_v = 2. The smallest singular value of {Q, P} is 3.2e-17 (m_x = 1), 0.018 (m_x = 2), 3.5e-17 (m_x = 3) and 0.0026 (m_x = 4). Three further draws with m_x = 2 give 0.037, 0.049 and 0.10.
4 correctness-risk src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:128-134, :38-41 The PR adds _reconstruction_target so that a decoded BilinearStiefelLayer field is not compared with [vec(F⁺); vec(F⁻)]. It applies it in the self form, the cross term and α_rec, but not in the external form loss(nn, m, x̂, x). That form still reaches the ndims(x.q) <= 2 branch of _frob_sq_diff(::AbstractMatrix, ::NamedTuple{(:q, :p)}), which is that wrong-layout comparison. The result is a silently different value with no error. The docstring asks for x̂ "of the same form as x", but nothing enforces it. Apply the target in the external form too, or delete the branch so that the mismatch raises an error. Probe P2 (BilinearStiefelLayer(4, 4, 2, 1), λ_lat = 0). loss(nn, :grid, F̂, F) = 0.969145, and loss(nn, :grid, F̂, (q = F⁺, p = F⁻)) = 0.974382 for the same field. The self forms agree (0.969145 for both). _frob_sq_diff(F̂, F) = 25.774, and _frob_sq_diff(F̂, (q = F⁺, p = F⁻)) = 26.053.
5 quality src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:180, :213-218 IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator), the call with every default, always raises an error, because the defaults α_H = 0.1 and H = nothing contradict each other. A signature whose defaults cannot be used together is a trap. Either default α_H to 0, so that a user who passes H sets the weight, or make H a required keyword. test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:301 asserts @test_throws re_iso_H IsometricRolloutLoss(step_id)
6 quality src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:343 CrossModalCycleLoss has no cycle term after this PR. Its docstring (:326) calls it an "alignment and cross-reconstruction loss". The name is unreleased (PR body: "No release has these names"), so a rename such as CrossModalLoss costs nothing now and needs a deprecation after 0.9.0. read :323-357
7 nit src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:272, :286 CodeRabbit's comment on :275 is correct in substance. With α_H = 0 and a supplied H, H is still called at every step. A non-finite H then turns the loss into NaN, because 0 * Inf is NaN. A simpler fix than the branches it proposes: store iszero(α_H) ? nothing : H in the constructor, so that the existing nothing methods cover the case. Probe P4: α_H = 0 with a counting H gives the same value as no H (19.1607) after 3 calls of H. H = z -> Inf gives NaN.
8 quality CHANGELOG.md:157 The new ### Changed bullet records a step inside one unreleased version ("the fixed ½‖ẑ‖² of #370", "lose the terms that are zero by construction"). A 0.9.0 reader never had the state of #370. The ### Added bullet at :153 already describes the end state. Fold the docstring-limit sentences into the Added bullets at :149 and :151, and drop :157. read CHANGELOG.md:149-157
9 nit src/loss/multimodal_losses.jl:361 The DimensionMismatch text says "different numbers of samples" for one sample against a batch of one, (2,) against (2, 1). The PR body lists this itself. "latent states of different sizes" is exact. PR body, "Unresolved"

Verified and fine

  • The _check_eltype and weight-validation paths, the batch-sum semantics and the pre-split recombination in the self form, the cross term and α_rec. Read, and backed by the tests at test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:355-508. P2 reproduces the agreement of the self forms.
  • The cross term against the dense oracle (:764-832): the encoder and decoder are built from the leaves and explicit parity matrices. This is independent of the code under test.
  • HRedSys away from the fixed point (test/reduced_system/reference_shift_and_vjp.jl:510-575): the oracle translates the fields and the initial state outside the system, which is a different code path from the shift inside HRedSys. A non-vacuity check is present.
  • The KNOWN_ISSUES.md K41 line citations (:385, :391, :397, :254) match the head.
  • No β_cycle, _eval_latent_H or "canonical quadratic energy" is left outside the tests that assert their absence (grep over src, docs, README.md).
  • JuliaFormatter (sciml) passes on all nine changed .jl files.
  • closingIssuesReferences is empty, and "Relates to #370" closes nothing.

Not checked

  • The two changed test files were not run locally. The green Julia 1 and Julia min jobs ran them.
  • "a collisionless plasma, whose sorted snapshots are not low-rank" (canonical_sort_layer.jl:39, canonical_slot_layer.jl:57, symmetric_symplectic_autoencoder.jl:9, page :14) is an empirical claim with no test or reference in the diff.
  • K41 stays open. A fix that drops the ArrayOrNamedTuple annotations might be ambiguous with the generic NetworkLoss methods. This was not probed.
  • Type stability and allocations of the new helpers: not re-measured.

Probe script: P1-P4 are the functions probe_cycle, probe_charbonnier_slot, probe_external_split, probe_bracket and probe_alphaH_zero, run against the PR head in a fresh session.

…ings

- CharbonnierRelativeLoss: the form with an external x̂ recombines a
pre-split BilinearStiefelLayer pair, given as x or as x̂, as the self
form does. A full decoded field against a pre-split x gave a silently
different value. The docstring says that the self form skips the
latent term for every core and frontend, and that the term need not
be zero for CanonicalSortLayer and CanonicalSlotLayer.
- IsometricRolloutLoss: with α_H = 0 the constructor stores nothing in
place of a given H, so H is never called and an Inf value of H no
  longer makes the loss NaN.
- CrossModalCycleLoss: the DimensionMismatch names different latent
sizes, not different sample counts, which was wrong for (2,) and (2, 1).
- BilinearStiefelLayer, LowRankStiefelLayer, stiefel_layer.md: the
linearised Vlasov bracket gives a {Q, P} that is not the identity and
can be singular; it is singular only for some bases.
- CHANGELOG: the Changed bullet folds into the Added bullets, without the
false claim that the dropped terms are zero by construction.

Commit 17b6450 addresses the review posted earlier on this PR (pullrequestreview-5721824136). Each finding, by its number in that table:

# severity action what
1 correctness-risk text fixed; behaviour needs a decision The CharbonnierRelativeLoss docstring now says that the form without x̂ skips the latent term for every core and frontend, so λ_lat has no effect there. It also says that the term need not be zero for any other core, or for a CanonicalSortLayer or CanonicalSlotLayer frontend, and that x̂ = decode(nn, m, encode(nn, m, x)) passed to the external form gives the term. The skip itself is unchanged: the testset "Cross-reconstruction term against a dense linear oracle" asserts it on the untied core as a design choice. Whether the self form should keep the latent term again, as on main, is a decision for the author.
2 correctness-risk fixed in CHANGELOG; PR body not edited The CHANGELOG no longer says that the dropped terms are zero by construction. The PR body still says it; it is the author's text.
3 correctness-risk fixed BilinearStiefelLayer, LowRankStiefelLayer and docs/src/layers/stiefel_layer.md now say that the linearised bracket gives a {Q, P} that "is not the identity and can be singular". Probe P3 re-run at the PR head: the largest singular value is at most 0.23 for m_x = 1…4, and the smallest is 3.2e-17 (m_x = 1), 0.018 (2), 3.5e-17 (3) and 0.0026 (4).
4 correctness-risk fixed The form loss(nn, m, x̂, x) passes both x̂ and x through _reconstruction_target, as the self form does. Probe P2: before, 0.969145 (full) against 0.974382 (split); after, 0.9691446855600846 against 0.9691446855600847. New tests: the external form with a pre-split x equals the full-field value, and a pre-split pair against itself gives exact zero(T).
5 quality needs a decision IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator) with all defaults still throws. Defaulting α_H = 0, or making H required, changes the API, so the author decides.
6 quality needs a decision The rename of CrossModalCycleLoss changes the API, so the author decides. It costs nothing before 0.9.0.
7 nit fixed With α_H = 0, the constructor stores nothing in place of a given H. Probe P4: before, H was called 3 times and H = Inf gave NaN; after, 0 calls and a finite value (19.1607…, the value without H). New test: IsometricRolloutLoss(step_id; α_H = 0.0, H = H_lat_def).H === nothing. This also resolves CodeRabbit's comment on the evaluation of H at α_H = 0.
8 quality fixed The ### Changed bullet is folded into the three ### Added bullets of the same unreleased version and removed.
9 nit fixed The DimensionMismatch now reads "CrossModalCycleLoss: the latent states of x_a and x_b have different sizes, (…) and (…).", and the two tests match it.

CodeRabbit's comment on the skip condition of the self form is finding 1, and it has the same status.

Verification of the fix commit: test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl passes 363 of 363 on Julia 1.13.3. JuliaFormatter, fatou lint, the load test and the NFC check pass on the changed files. The docs build was not run locally; the Documentation job of this push covers it.

The three red jobs of the previous head (Julia pre, Julia nightly, Downgrade) fail the same way on main and are not caused by this PR, as the review explains.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Promote mixed parity components before recombining them.

For a Float64 network, a two-dimensional pre-split input can have Float64 q and Float32 p. The bilinear encoder accepts that input, but _parity_recombine requires both arrays to have the same element type. The external loss therefore throws a MethodError. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Promote the components before recombination.

…dalLoss

- CharbonnierRelativeLoss: the self form evaluates the latent term again,
with x̂ = decode(encode(x)), so both forms evaluate one formula and
λ_lat acts in both. The skipped term is not zero for CanonicalSortLayer
  or CanonicalSlotLayer frontends.
- A pre-split BilinearStiefelLayer pair whose halves have different
element types raises an ArgumentError naming both, in place of a
MethodError from _parity_recombine (CodeRabbit comment 4431005164).
- IsometricRolloutLoss: α_H defaults to 0.0, so
IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator) constructs and has no energy term.
- CrossModalCycleLoss is renamed CrossModalLoss; it has no cycle term.
  No release has either name.
- KNOWN_ISSUES K41: the name and its line citations follow.
- CHANGELOG: the unreleased bullet describes the end state.

Decisions on findings 1, 5 and 6, and CodeRabbit comment 4431005164

Commit a0d1946 implements the author's decisions on the three findings that the previous comment left open:

# decision what
1 restore the latent term Both forms of CharbonnierRelativeLoss evaluate one formula; the self form uses x̂ = decode(nn, m, encode(nn, m, x)), so λ_lat acts in both. The testset "Cross-reconstruction term against a dense linear oracle" now asserts the latent term on the untied core (self form = reconstruction + latent). The docstring and the CHANGELOG no longer say that the term is skipped or zero.
5 default α_H = 0.0 IsometricRolloutLoss(integrator) constructs, has no energy term, and is tested against the hand-computed α_lat and α_rec terms. α_H > 0 without H still raises the ArgumentError.
6 rename CrossModalCycleLoss is CrossModalLoss in src, test, docs, CHANGELOG.md and KNOWN_ISSUES.md (K41, with its line citations moved). No release has either name.

CodeRabbit comment 4431005164 (a pre-split pair with Float64 q and Float32 p): a new test first reproduced the MethodError from _parity_recombine in both Charbonnier forms. The fix does not promote the halves: a pre-split pair whose halves have different element types now raises ArgumentError: A pre-split pair (q = F⁺, p = F⁻) needs one element type, got q of element type Float64 and p of element type Float32. before the recombination. A test checks the error in both forms, and a same-element-type pair against the full field that it recombines to by hand. The docstring says that a pre-split pair needs one element type.

With the new default, a passed H would have no effect when α_H is left at 0. Commit e800bdc, on the author's decision, makes the constructor refuse it: ArgumentError: IsometricRolloutLoss: H has no effect when α_H = 0, got α_H = 0.0 and a latent Hamiltonian H. Set α_H > 0, or pass no H. Anchored @test_throws tests cover the default α_H and an explicit α_H = 0.0. Two tests that check the element type of H and of the integrator's output pass α_H = 0.1 explicitly, because they need an active H. At e800bdc the test file passes 373 of 373.

test/architectures/multimodal_symplectic_autoencoder.jl passes 372 of 372 at a0d1946, Julia 1.13.3. JuliaFormatter, fatou lint, the load test and the NFC check pass on the changed files. The PR body's Summary is updated, and it has a new section, Review fixes.

With the default α_H = 0, a passed H had no effect and was dropped
without a word. The constructor now raises an ArgumentError that names
α_H and H, and stores H as given otherwise. The docstring, the CHANGELOG
bullet and the K41 line citations follow.

A negative zero satisfies iszero, so the constructor refuses a given H
with it and accepts it without one. Two tests pin both cases.
