[GUIDE] Format an SD Card of 128GB or More for PSP

If, like me, you weren't able to format your 256GB+ microSD card on your PSP, here is a detailed guide on how to do it (at least what worked for me).

For reference, here are the errors you might encounter:

  • Format Failed 80220087
  • No DUO card inserted, please format your card

If these errors persist even after formatting multiple times, here is a manual method to "format" your ultra-high-capacity duo (microSD) card.

Notes

  • Tested only on a 256GB card.
  • When I say SD, I mean microSD, DUO, SD, storage media… basically what you store your data on.
  • ⚠️ This process will delete all data on your new SD card. Back it up first if necessary.
  • This worked with my cheap adapter from AliExpress (single card).
  • 🔗 If needed, everything (executables + image file) is also available in the GitHub repo.

Requirements

You’ll need:

  • A PSP console experiencing the formatting error.
  • A large SD card (128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1024GB) that you can’t format.
  • A Windows PC with an SD reader.
  • A smaller SD card (1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB) that works fine with the PSP.

Steps

1. Prepare the Big SD Card

  1. Download and install Win32 Disk Imager → SourceForge Link
  2. Insert the new large SD card into your computer.
  3. Download the zzBlank image file → zzBlank.img
  4. In Win32 Disk Imager:
    • Select the zzBlank.img file as Image File.
    • Choose your SD card as the target.
    • Click Write.
  5. Once finished, close the program.

2. Format to FAT32

  1. Download FAT32 Format → Ridgecrop GUIFormat
  2. Run the program, select your large SD card, and click Start.
  3. Your SD card is now FAT32, but not yet PSP-ready.

3. Prepare a Working PSP Card

  1. Insert your smaller SD card into the PSP.
  2. On PSP:
    • Go to System Settings → Format Memory Stick.
  3. Turn off the PSP, remove the small card, and plug it into your computer.
  4. Enable hidden files view in Windows.
  5. Copy the entire contents of the small card into a clean folder.

4. Transfer to the Big SD Card

  1. Insert the large SD card back into your computer.
  2. Copy the files from the smaller card’s backup onto the large card.
  3. Safely eject the large SD card using Windows.

5. Final Step

  • Insert the large SD card into your PSP using the DUO adapter.
  • 🎉 Done! Your PSP should now recognize the full storage.

⚠️ Note: It may take the PSP longer to load with larger cards.
Tested on CFW Infinity 6.61 PROMOD-C2p.
