feat(anthropic): accept deferred tool loading blocks - #1209
SantiagoDePolonia merged 2 commits into
Conversation
Claude Code sends tool-search payloads when ENABLE_TOOL_SEARCH is set: a tool marked defer_loading, and a tool_reference for each tool the search matched. The translator rejected tool_reference inside a tool_result, so every later turn of the conversation failed with a 400. A deferred tool is an ordinary custom tool, so the marker is accepted and dropped. A tool_reference degrades to the tool name as text, because no provider behind the translated pipeline loads tool schemas by reference, and a server-side tool_search_tool_result degrades the same way into the user turn. This lets a client running deferred tool loading continue a conversation against any provider.

A tool_search_tool_result keeps its matches in a nested tool_search_tool_search_result object under content, not on the outer block. The translator read the outer field, so the matched tool names were dropped and the downstream model was told nothing about the search. Decode the nested object and render its references.

Add a test for decodeSearchResult error paths.
The decoder returns an error when content of a tool_search_tool_result block is not a JSON object. An example is a string or an array. parseContent then rejects the whole message with a 400. Anthropic can send an error variant, such as tool_search_tool_result_error, in content. That variant is an object with different fields, so it decodes without error and yields no references. This is safe.
The existing tests cover only the success path. Add a test for the error variant and for malformed content. The test fixes the intended behavior.

Description
Closes #1208.
Claude Code sends the tool-search shape when
ENABLE_TOOL_SEARCHis on — which it must be whenANTHROPIC_BASE_URLis a gateway rather than a first-party Anthropic host. That shape has two parts the Messages translator rejected: a tool markeddefer_loading: true, and atool_referencefor each tool the search matched. Thetool_referenceis the breaking one: it sits inside atool_result, the translator only knew text/image/document/search_result there, and the 400 repeats on every later turn because the block stays in the transcript.tools[].defer_loadingtool_referencein atool_resulttool_referenceelsewhere in a turntool_search_tool_resultThe degradation is deliberate. No provider behind the translated pipeline loads tool schemas by reference, so a reference has no meaning there; the name as text is what lets the model know a tool was found.
tool_search_tool_resultcannot become arole: "tool"message because the server-side search has no client-sidetool_useto pair with, so it goes into the user turn's text instead. The native Anthropic path is untouched: it already forwards the original body byte-for-byte, so
tool_referencestill reaches Anthropic as a real reference there.Testing
