TL;DR

The chatgpt provider answered every chat completions request with 501 unsupported_provider_operation, so chat-only harnesses and mixed virtual-model pools could not use ChatGPT subscription models. Adds the inverse of the existing ResponsesViaChat adapter: chat requests translate onto the Responses API upstream, and Responses streams translate back to chat chunks. The full reverse mapping covers messages, tool calls, refusals, encrypted reasoning, strict-tool defaults, and round-trip reasoning state.

Closes #1084. Part of #723. Follow-up for the Messages ingress: #1085.

File Why
internal/providers/chat_via_responses.go (start here) Entry points ChatViaResponses / StreamChatViaResponses, request mapping, flat-field lift (reasoning_effort, verbosity, max_completion_tokens, metadata, response_format), strict-tool default, custom-tool rejection, and the validation rules.
internal/providers/chat_via_responses_input.go Messages to Responses input items. Leading system/developer messages become instructions; mid-conversation ones stay in place. Tool calls become function_call items. Refusals rebuild as a type:"refusal" content part. reasoning.encrypted_content rebuilds on the replay reasoning item. Unnamed inline file data inherits the default filename.
internal/providers/chat_via_responses_output.go Responses output back to one chat choice. Reads part.Refusal first, falls back to part.Text. Preserves reasoning.encrypted_content for round-trip. Mints the chatcmpl- ID.

How

  • Translation follows the mirror adapter. Same package, same naming, same error style.
  • Parameters without a Responses equivalent fail with a 400 that names the field, before any upstream call: n > 1, logit_bias, stop, seed, both penalties, logprobs, top_logprobs, modalities, audio, web_search_options, deprecated functions / function_call. Zero spellings of logprobs, top_logprobs, and the penalties (false / 0) are tolerated: they change nothing. prediction and n: 1 are stripped, not rejected.
  • Chat function tools flatten into the Responses shape and default to strict: false. Responses defaults to strict tools, which makes optional arguments required; the adapter sets strict: false explicitly to preserve the chat default. An explicit strict: true is preserved. tool_choice flattens the same way ({type:"function", function:{name}} → {type:"function", name}); the mode strings auto / required / none pass through, anything else is rejected.
  • Chat type: "custom" tools are rejected with a 400 invalid_request_error. Custom tools have no streaming or history representation on this path yet; full translation is deferred until the Responses custom-tool surface stabilises.
  • Flat chat fields without a typed slot on ChatRequest lift onto typed Responses slots. reasoning_effort fills Reasoning.Effort when empty, verbosity merges into Text.Verbosity when absent, and metadata lifts onto the typed field. response_format becomes text.format, the exact inverse of the inbound mapping. An explicit max_completion_tokens extra wins over the mapped max_tokens; both map to max_output_tokens. Lifted keys are stripped from extras so they do not travel upstream as unknown members. A typed value already set by the caller wins.
  • The Codex backend pins store: false and rejects previous_response_id. Minted chatcmpl- IDs are labels, not handles. No chaining exists. Chat clients resend full history as usual.
  • Refusal text round-trips on both directions. The non-streaming output reads part.Refusal first, falls back to part.Text for legacy payloads. The reverse mapping rebuilds a type: "refusal" content part on the input item rather than passing the chat member through.
  • Reasoning state round-trips. The chat output carries reasoning.encrypted_content (the ChatGPT backend's encrypted reasoning) under the same key. The chat input rebuilds it as the native Responses encrypted_content on the replay reasoning item, and the stream converter relays it on the chat surface.
  • Inline file data without a filename inherits core.DefaultFilename(fileData), matching the existing OpenAI adapter. OpenAI rejects inline file data without a filename.
  • An instruction-only request (system messages, no user input) sends a non-nil empty input array. A nil input reads as a malformed request upstream.

Reviewer notes

  • Fast-fail 400 is not failover-eligible. Default policy retries 429 and 5xx only. A bad request fails once, in place.
  • Tool-call argument deltas can arrive before the call identity. The stream converter buffers them per item until output_item.added delivers the call ID, then emits the start chunk plus the buffered arguments. An item that ends without an identity falls back to the terminal output_item.done payload. The recovery loop iterates identity-pending items in ascending toolIndex order so the emitted chunks are stable across runs.
  • Buffered arguments are capped. maxPendingArgumentsBytes bounds the total across all identity-pending items. Past the cap the stream fails as truncated instead of buffering unboundedly.
  • response.failed on the non-streaming path returns a 502 provider error. Without the check it would surface as a 200 with empty content.
  • temperature and max_tokens map to valid Responses fields, then Codex drops them upstream. Same behavior as the native Responses path onto this backend. Documented in docs/providers/chatgpt.mdx.
  • Usage accounting works on both paths. The stream converter emits the usage chunk only when the client asked or the enforcement flag is on.
  • Structured tool results (image, audio, file) cannot travel as content parts on Responses function_call_output. The typed Output field is a string; carrying an array of content parts requires a core schema change and is out of scope. The adapter stringifies content for now; the comment above chatToolMessageToResponsesItem notes the follow-up.
  • Focus area: the item tracking in chat_via_responses_stream.go — item_id to dense tool_calls[].index mapping under interleaved parallel calls, and the identity recovery loop's ordering.

Tests

go build ./... and go test ./... pass. New tests cover every mapped field, every rejected field (typed and via ExtraFields), null and zero-value tolerance, the response_format → text.format mapping, the max_completion_tokens / max_tokens mapping, parallel tool calls, delta-first tool-call ordering, the pending-arguments cap, refusal round-trip (with Refusal populated, with Text fallback, with malformed JSON dropped), encrypted-reasoning round-trip (non-streaming and streaming), the mid-conversation system/developer unknown-part rejection, the unnamed inline file's default filename, the flat-field lift for reasoning_effort and verbosity (including the typed-value-wins case), the explicit-strict-preserved case, the custom-tool rejection (nested and flat), and ID stability. A wiring test locks the chatgpt delegation with zero network calls. Coverage on the four adapter files averages 99.1% across their 52 functions; the six uncovered statements are defensive guards and unreachable-by-construction branches with "unreachable" / "defensive" comments at the call site.

Follow-up

  • feat(providers): Messages ingress onto Responses-only upstreams (MessagesViaResponses) #1085: Messages ingress onto Responses-only upstreams, after this merges.
  • Emulation of n > 1 (fan-out) and stop (lookbehind cut) is possible later. Not in scope.
  • Full custom-tool translation (output items, stream events, history) once the Responses custom-tool surface stabilises.
  • Structured tool-result content parts on function_call_output once ResponsesInputElement.Output becomes a string-or-array union.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • ChatGPT subscriptions now support Chat Completions, including streaming, by translating requests to the Responses API and adapting results back.
    • Supported requests include messages, tools, response formats, reasoning, and usage reporting.
  • Limitations
    • Embeddings remain unavailable, and translated chat responses cannot be chained.
    • Unsupported chat parameters are rejected before upstream requests; prediction is ignored.
  • Documentation
    • Updated provider documentation with Chat Completions support and request and response limitations.

Apply nine review findings from @coderabbitai and @greptile-apps on
PR 1086 in a single commit:

Hc1: refusal text read from part.Refusal, fall back to part.Text.
Hc8: terminal recovery iterates identity-pending items in ascending
toolIndex order so the emitted start chunks are stable across
runs (Go map order is randomized).
IZv: flat reasoning_effort and verbosity fields on a chat request
map onto the typed Reasoning.Effort and Text.Verbosity slots
on the Responses request; the flat key is stripped so it does
not travel upstream as an unknown field.
IZx: refusal text round-trips on both directions; reasoning.encrypted_content
from the ChatGPT backend is preserved on the chat output and
rebuilt on the chat input as the native Responses member.
IZz: chat custom tools are rejected with a 400 invalid_request_error
before any upstream call; full custom-tool translation is
deferred until the Responses custom-tool surface stabilises.
P1: chat function tools that omit strict default to strict:true on
       the Responses side, which makes optional arguments required;
the adapter sets strict:false explicitly, matching the existing
       OpenAI adapter.
P1: inline file data without a filename inherits core.DefaultFilename,
so OpenAI accepts the request upstream.
P1: structured tool results (image/audio/file) cannot travel as
content parts on Responses function_call_output because the
typed Output field is a string; this is acknowledged in the
code and tracked as a follow-up.

Coverage on the four edited files averages 98.9% across 52 functions;
the six uncovered lines are unreachable-by-construction defensive
branches (e.g. json.Marshal of a string cannot fail, ExtractTextContent
fallback, redundant identity-pending guard in the recovery loop).

go vet ./... passes. go test ./... passes. go build ./... passes.

📝 Walkthrough

The ChatGPT provider now accepts chat-completion requests and translates them to the Responses API. The adapter converts chat messages, tools, and settings into Responses requests, then converts Responses results and streams into chat-completion outputs. Embeddings remain unsupported.

Explanation

The description is detailed, relevant, and covers the implementation, validation rules, tests, scope, and follow-ups. It does not use the template's exact "## Description" heading, but it provides the required substantive information.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1084 requires a chat-to-Responses adapter and ChatGPT wiring. ConvertChatRequestToResponses, ChatViaResponses, and StreamChatViaResponses implement the adapter. The code converts messages, tools, output, SSE events, usage, refusals, and reasoning state. It rejects unsupported fields before the upstream call. chatgpt.Provider delegates both chat methods to the adapter and keeps embeddings unsupported. The output converter mints chatcmpl-<uuid> IDs, and the implementation does not provide response chaining. Tests cover the mapping, validation, streaming, usage, and provider wiring.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #1084. Adapter code, ChatGPT wiring, tests, and provider documentation directly support the requested chat-to-Responses surface. The changes do not implement the stated follow-ups, including Messages ingress, fan-out for n > 1, stop emulation, full custom-tool translation, or structured tool-result content parts.
