Description

Exchange.Headers.Upstream is documented as adding headers to the provider call, but the host only logged the field. Prompt-phase plugins therefore cannot set provider-bound headers such as an edge proxy token.

This change keeps the headers a plugin writes to Exchange.Headers.Upstream in the request state, carries them on the request context, and merges them into every outgoing provider request in llmclient (all Do* paths share buildRequest). A deny-list keeps provider credentials and transport headers out of plugin control: Authorization, x-goog-api-key, X-Api-Key, Cookie, Host, Content-Length.

Tests: internal/llmclient covers GET/POST/DELETE, the credential deny-list, plugin-over-request precedence, and an end-to-end Do; internal/plugins covers capture and merge. The new tests fail without the merge and pass with it.

Verification: make test (5282 tests) and go vet pass. make lint could not run in the contributor environment because the pinned golangci-lint v2.14.0 (and v2.15.0) is built with Go 1.26 while the module targets Go 1.27.2.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Prompt-phase plugins can add custom headers to outgoing provider requests. These headers can override request-specific values, while credentials and sensitive transport headers remain protected.
    • Gemini requests can include an edge proxy authentication token when one is configured, for both native and OpenAI-compatible request formats. Empty tokens are not sent.

📝 Walkthrough

Plugin exchanges can supply upstream headers for provider requests. Request state accumulates them, and the server passes them through request context. Request construction applies permitted plugin values while preserving protected headers. Gemini requests also include a configured edge proxy token.

Changes: Plugin Upstream Header Propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect exchange upstream headers
internal/plugins/request_state.go, internal/plugins/request_state_upstream_test.go
RequestState.Finish stores and merges non-empty upstream headers from exchanges. UpstreamHeaders returns a copy or nil when no headers are stored. Tests cover retention, accumulation, and empty state.
Pass headers through request context
internal/core/context.go, internal/server/plugin_chains.go
Context helpers store and retrieve plugin-supplied upstream headers. The server adds headers from request state to the context when present.
Apply headers to provider requests
internal/llmclient/client_request.go, internal/llmclient/plugin_headers_test.go
Request construction merges plugin headers with request-specific headers. Plugin values replace matching values except for Authorization, X-Goog-Api-Key, X-Api-Key, Cookie, Host, and Content-Length. Tests cover methods, precedence, protected headers, and request execution.

Gemini Edge Proxy Token

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure Gemini proxy token
internal/providers/gemini/gemini.go
The provider reads and trims EDGE_PROXY_AUTH_TOKEN. Both Gemini request header paths add X-Edge-Proxy-Token when the value is non-empty.

Gemini requests now carry the edge proxy token to any configured endpoint, including official Gemini hosts and plain-http URLs. That can leak the secret. Plugin-supplied upstream headers can still replace some provider credentials, such as Azure's Api-Key, and conflicting header casings resolve unpredictably. Restrict where the edge token is sent and close the deny-list gaps before merging.

P1 security Plugins can replace Azure's key

pluginDeniedUpstreamHeaders misses Azure's api-key header. Azure sets this credential before the new merge, so a plugin that writes Exchange.Headers.Upstream["api-key"] replaces the configured provider key. Requests can fail authentication or run under a different key. X-Api-Key does not block Api-Key; they are different names.

Add Api-Key to the deny-list and test it.

How this was verified: Azure sets api-key through SetAuthHeaders, and the new merge accepts that name and overwrites the provider's value.

P1 Utility calls miss plugin headers

The new context attachment only runs for translated inference and Messages. CountResponseInputTokens and CompactResponse also run prompt plugins through utilityRequest, but neither calls applyPluginRequestHeaders. Their provider calls still omit Exchange.Headers.Upstream. An edge proxy that requires a plugin-supplied token can therefore accept generation calls but reject these operations.

Carry the saved headers onto the context used by both utility calls. Those handlers currently keep a local context captured before the plugins run.

Deny Azure and proxy credential headers before plugin merge.

Azure's setHeaders writes Api-Key. Because Api-Key is not denied, a plugin can replace the Azure credential after headerSetter runs. Proxy-Authorization is also classified as a credential header but is not denied, so a plugin can inject it into the outgoing request.

Do not add Transfer-Encoding or Trailer for request-smuggling protection. Go's net/http writer does not use those names from Request.Header. It derives framing from other request fields. The X-Amz-* claim is also not a headerSetter override: Bedrock Mantle applies its authentication transport after buildRequest, and direct Bedrock requests use the AWS SDK. Add an X-Amz- prefix deny rule only if the policy is to prohibit plugins from supplying AWS signing headers.

The test does not cover the Host deny-list assertion correctly.

req.Host is set from the URL by http.NewRequestWithContext. It does not come from req.Header. The assertion at Line 52 would pass even without the Host deny entry. It does not verify the deny-list. Assert req.Header.Get("Host") is empty as well.

Plugin header keys are not canonicalized before the merge.

maps.Copy merges x.Headers.Upstream by raw key. A plugin can write x-foo in one exchange and X-Foo in another, so both keys stay in upstreamHeaders. Downstream, requestHeadersWithPluginOverrides canonicalizes the keys, and map iteration order is random. Which value wins is therefore nondeterministic.

Canonicalize each key while merging. Later exchanges then replace earlier ones deterministically.

Proposed fix
-	maps.Copy(s.upstreamHeaders, x.Headers.Upstream)
+	for key, values := range x.Headers.Upstream {
+ s.upstreamHeaders[http.CanonicalHeaderKey(key)] = append([]string(nil), values...)
+	}

The maps import then becomes unused. Remove it if no other use exists.

Restrict X-Edge-Proxy-Token to the trusted edge-proxy origin.

When EDGE_PROXY_AUTH_TOKEN is set, both Gemini header setters add it to every request. BaseURL accepts other hosts and cleartext http URLs. The shared client sends the request without removing this header, so the token can be disclosed to a non-proxy destination or over cleartext.

Add the header only when req.URL matches the trusted edge-proxy origin. Do not send it to official Gemini endpoints or arbitrary configured URLs.

Review comment at @internal/providers/gemini/gemini.go at line 242:
Update both Gemini request header setters to add X-Edge-Proxy-Token only when
req.URL matches the existing trusted edge-proxy origin, including its scheme and
host; omit it for official Gemini endpoints and all other URLs.

Thanks @fede-ciliberti! Wiring Exchange.Headers.Upstream is the right fix: the plugin API promises it and core only logged it.

Could you split the PR?

Keep: the upstream header merge. A few changes:

  • Use one shared credential-header list in core instead of a new one. Today there are three lists that disagree (headeredit/config.go, plugins/request_state.go, and this PR's list). This PR's list misses Api-Key (Azure), Proxy-Authorization, X-Anthropic-Api-Key and Transfer-Encoding.
  • Merge duplicate header names that differ only in case the same way every time (currently it depends on map iteration order).
  • Update docs/advanced/plugins.mdx (the Upstream row) and the upstream_set help text. Note that the headers follow failover attempts and are not sent on token-counting or compaction calls.

Drop: the Gemini EDGE_PROXY_AUTH_TOKEN change. A fixed secret for a proxy in front of one provider is provider config, not plugin or provider-code logic. We'd rather add providers.<name>.headers, with values that accept secret references:

providers:
  gemini:
    base_url: https://edge.internal/gemini
    headers:
      X-Edge-Proxy-Token: ${EDGE_PROXY_TOKEN}

That keeps the token tied to one destination, avoids sending it to Google directly or to failover providers, and gets our secret handling and log scrubbing. upstream_set stays for non-secret metadata.

Happy to take the provider headers: part ourselves, or you're welcome to open it as a follow-up.
