Summary

Adds a build boolean-style input to the action, as requested in #61. When set, it passes --build to the CLI for deployment commands (up, compose up, deploy) only — down and other commands are unaffected, and an explicit --build already present in command takes precedence.

Changes

  • action.yaml: new build input (default false, preserves current behavior). When true, appends --build to the CLI invocation only for up/compose up/deploy commands, skipping it if command already mentions --build.
  • README.md: documents the new input.
  • .github/workflows/test.yaml: exercises build: true in the existing dry-run test case.

Verified against the CLI source (DefangLabs/defang): up/deploy have a --build flag; down does not, matching the unknown flag: --build error reported in the issue.

Fixes #61

Test plan

  • Verified the bash case-matching logic locally against up, compose up, deploy (with/without extra args), down, unrelated commands, and an explicit --build=false override.
  • CI run on this PR (test.yaml, which now passes build: true in the dry-run case).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional setting to build source images for up, compose up, and deploy commands. It is disabled by default and does not add the build flag if the command already specifies it. Other command types are unaffected.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on enabling source builds, supported commands, and when the build flag is applied.

Adds a `build` boolean-style input that passes `--build` to the CLI
for deployment commands (`up`, `compose up`, `deploy`) only. `down`
and other commands are unaffected, and an explicit `--build` already
present in `command` takes precedence. Default preserves current
behavior.

Fixes #61

📝 Walkthrough

The action adds an optional build input. When enabled, it adds --build to up, compose up, and deploy commands unless the command already contains --build or --build=. The README documents this behavior, and a workflow step enables the input.

The action adds an optional build input, defaulting to false. When enabled for a supported command, it adds --build unless the command already contains --build or --build=. The README documents the behavior, and the Deploy-Empty-Params workflow step sets build: true.

The build input appears ready to merge, but its workflow case would not catch a regression that stops adding --build. Add a focused argument check to protect the new behavior.

Explanation

Issue #61 requires a boolean-style build input with default false, scoped --build behavior, preserved behavior for down and unrelated commands, and explicit command-flag precedence. action.yaml defines the input, recognizes boolean-style true values, adds --build for up, compose up, and deploy, and skips the addition when the command contains --build or --build=. The existing workflow test passes build: true, and the README documents the behavior. No concrete coding requirement remains unmet.

Explanation

The changes are limited to the build input and command handling in action.yaml, related README documentation, and a workflow test update. Each change supports issue #61. No unrelated change is established.

interpolating the input into the script.
- Line 224: Update the `command` case match so it recognizes `--build` only as a
separate argument or as an argument beginning with `--build=`, not as a
substring within another option’s value.

- Pass the `build` input through a step env var (BUILD) instead of
interpolating it directly into the script, matching the existing
pattern used for COMMAND and other inputs.
- Match `--build` in `command` only as a standalone token or as
`--build=...`, not as a substring of another flag (e.g. `--buildx`).

Add a check that the dry-run case detects the --build append.

The Deploy-Empty-Params step sets build: true, but no step checks the arguments that the action passes to defang. The step also sets continue-on-error: true, so its outcome does not fail the job. If the append logic in action.yaml were removed, this case would still pass, and the new --build behavior would stay untested.

The workflow has no other case that sets build. Nothing tests down, an explicit --build=false, or the deploy alias.

A focused check can detect the difference. One option is to run the action with a stub defang earlier on PATH that records its arguments. The check then asserts that compose up with build: true receives --build, and that down and --build=false do not. This check must not depend on the outcome of the continue-on-error step.

Update the workflow around the Deploy-Empty-Params step to verify the arguments

continue-on-error. Put a stub defang earlier on PATH that records its arguments,
then assert that this compose up invocation with build: true includes --build.
