Development Log

Hello! This is the development log of goodluckOS. I'll periodically write updates about the status of the project, what's being worked on, what's in the backlog, and other related info.

Big things are coming!

I've reverse-engineered the init sequence for Panel 2 displays, and alvesmaicon, muhammedbyk and myself have been hard at work getting A23 support working. We're very close, there's a just a few audio issues to sort out. Once this is done I believe goodluckOS will be compatible with all GA36-MB devices.

On top of that, alvesmaicon got usb MTP working on the OTG port. This means you can copy games to your device by just plugging it into your PC with a USB cable and drag+dropping roms. No more pulling the SD card out.

On top of that, he's figured out how to get the TF-2 slot working, so now you can use a second microSD card to hold even more games. TF-2 is also accessible over MTP as well, so you won't have to pull that card out either.

  • At least one user has been able to successfully boot the v0.0.1 pre-release alpha on their hardware. Yippee. However, it's still not working for most people.
  • u/esisla has sent me the first 128mb of their stock microSD card, and I was able to extract the .fex file from it, which showed me that the DRAM timings needed by their device is completely different than mine.
  • I created a special build of goodluckOS from their bootloader and they were able to get the OS booted, but the display failed to initialize after the bootloader leading me to believe that either a) they have a different display panel, or b) the display panel is wired up to the SoC a little differently.
  • I've removed the v0.0.1 pre-release download as it was only working for one person.
  • I've written a Hardware Identifier tool which allows users to upload their sd card dumps (.img file), and it will read the script.bin file, checksum it, and then compare that against a list of known hardware revisions. This allows us to gate downloads behind a hardware-compatibility wall.
  • I reuploadead the v0.0.1 release, but added a big warning on the release page telling people NOT to download it directly. I may want to find a better, more hidden way to host these files, as users should only ever be downloading things through the Hardware Identifier tool.

  • A pre-release alpha build of goodluckOS (v0.0.1) was silently released on GitHub. A number of people found it and attempted to install, but most of these installations failed to make it into the bootloader.
