Summary

Closes #1216. Part of spec #1209. This PR uses @botharness/pixel-avatar 0.8.0 (BotHarness/BotPixel#16), which computes every tool's cells.

Tools

  • Line and Rectangle. Hold Shift to snap to 0°, 45° or 90°, or to a square.
  • Gradient. A tone gradient inside the start region. It runs from the selected color and tone to a Gradient to tone, with 4×4 or 2×2 Bayer dithering. RGB is never blended; the result is ordinary cells.
  • Noise. ±1 tone texture with an amount slider and Re-roll. The seed is used only while drawing, and changing the amount re-applies to the same base.
  • Eyedropper. A tool of its own, or Alt-click / long-press with any tool. It picks a color source plus tone, never a hex value.
  • Shade pencil. Off, Lighter or Darker. It moves each colored cell one tone, once per stroke, and skips empty cells.

Behavior

  • Every tool honors mirror.
  • Each stroke or tool action is one undo step. A cancelled gesture restores both the undo and redo stacks.
  • Touch:
    • a two-finger tap undoes and a three-finger tap redoes;
    • a long press picks a color;
    • Offset cursor puts the cursor three rows above the finger, and a separate Hold to draw button paints.
  • Pointer moves map to cells from coordinates, so touch drags work under implicit pointer capture.
  • The results stay appearance colors at a tone, so changing the hair color recolors the part with its tones intact.

Evidence

I captured this on an isolated DSH instance built from this branch. The speech is simulated: a test script drives the companion's mouth layers, and no model reply was involved. Details: docs/assets/pr/1216-drawing-tools.

Verification

  • pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint and pnpm format:check pass.
  • The new custom-part-tools.test.ts (jsdom) covers:
    • mirrored line and rectangle as one undo step each;
    • gradient stepping, dithering and recoloring;
    • noise with re-roll, amount, mirror and a single undo;
    • shade once per stroke;
    • Alt-click and eyedropper picks;
    • two- and three-finger tap undo/redo;
    • long-press pick;
    • drawing through the offset cursor.
  • The existing editor tests pass.
  • Waiting for human QA: how the tools feel on a real touch device.

  • New Features

    • Expanded the Part Library editor with line, rectangle, gradient, noise, eyedropper, and shading tools.
    • Added mirroring, undo and redo, touch gestures, shape snapping, and offset-cursor drawing controls.
    • Appearance colors adapt to the selected tone, with options to adjust shading and texture.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the feature guide and added screenshots and a recorded walkthrough.

The part editor adds line and rectangle with Shift snapping, a tone
gradient with 4x4 or 2x2 dithering, noise with an amount and re-roll,
an eyedropper (Alt-click or long-press) and a lighter/darker shade
pencil, all mirrored and one undo step each. On touch, two- and

Presses outside the grid no longer paint its edge. Long press picks only
from a colored cell with a stroke tool; two- and three-finger taps count
only when quick and still, and cancel fills and noise too; an
eyedropper tap on touch picks on release. Pointer cancel reverts the
gesture instead of committing it. Hold to draw captures the pointer and
reverts on cancel. Noise re-roll and amount keep the layer and mirror
they were applied with.

CodeRabbit is rate-limited, so an independent review agent checked this diff instead. It found no stale-closure bugs or source-policy problems, but did find gesture-wiring issues.

Fixed in 89b928c:

  • A press outside the 32×16 headpiece grid no longer paints its last row. Clamping now only applies during an active gesture.
  • Long press:
    • it starts only with a stroke tool on a colored cell, so a slow tap no longer erases a dot;
    • with fill or noise, it no longer applies the tool and also picks a color.
  • Two- and three-finger taps:
    • they count only when the second finger lands within 250 ms of the first and the first hasn't moved;
    • they now cancel a fill or noise that the first finger applied;
    • on touch, the eyedropper picks on release, so a multi-touch can't change the ink;
    • extra fingers during a long stroke no longer undo.
  • pointercancel reverts the gesture instead of committing it.
  • Hold to draw:
    • it captures the pointer, so releasing over the canvas ends the stroke;
    • cancel reverts the stroke;
    • keyboard activation stamps once at the cursor.
  • Noise: Re-roll and the amount slider keep the layer and mirror the noise was applied with.
  • Cursor: the offset cursor only re-renders when it moves to a new cell.

New tests cover multi-touch with fill, pointercancel on a line, and re-roll after switching layers. The other tests are unchanged, except one that now expects a slow tap on an empty cell to keep its dot.

Touch tests send a MouseEvent, not a PointerEvent.

The helper creates a MouseEvent and overrides pointerType with a defined property. React reads event.pointerType from the native event, so the touch branch runs. The event still has no touch-specific fields, such as width, pressure or isPrimary. Separate pointer IDs only partly represent real multi-touch. The PR also states that human QA on a touch device is still pending. If jsdom supports PointerEvent, use it with pointerType: 'touch' so the tests match the touch path more closely.

cancel() can drop an unrelated history entry.

cancel() always removes the last entry from past. It does not check whether this gesture added that entry. A fixed mouse gesture (fill or noise, not touch) sets gesture.current = undefined after it records history. If a later pointer event calls cancel() with no gesture active, the early return protects past. The problem is the long-press timer. The timer calls cancel() and then pick(). Suppose a multi-touch event or pointercancel already called cancel() before the timer fires. Line 283 clears the timer for the multi-touch case. onAbort also calls clearPress(). These paths are guarded. The remaining risk comes from the offset "Hold to draw" button. Its onPointerCancel={() => cancel()} can run after onLostPointerCapture already called end(). At that point gesture.current is undefined, so the early return applies.

I traced the paths I could find, and each one is guarded. The invariant is still implicit. Store the history length in Gesture when the gesture starts. Restore past to that length on cancel, instead of calling slice(0, -1). This keeps past correct if a new path reaches cancel() after a commit.

CodeRabbit's two trivial nitpicks stay as they are:

  • Touch tests use MouseEvent with pointerType. jsdom has no PointerEvent, and React reads pointerType and pointerId from the native event, so the touch path does run. Behavior on a real device is left for human QA, as the PR says.
  • cancel() drops the last history entry. CodeRabbit's own trace found every path guarded, because cancel() returns early unless a live gesture added that entry. Storing the history length would only make that rule explicit.

The linked-issue warning about BotPixel unit tests is covered by drawing-tools.test.ts in BotHarness/BotPixel#16. It tests dither, gradient stepping, noise determinism and mirror behavior for each tool.
