Why

The engine took a color all along and passed it straight to CSS. Nothing on the page reached
it — and worse, changedOptions never emitted color, so a visitor who picked a colour
and pasted the result got a component drawing in currentColor with nothing saying why. Same
class as spec being flattened to top-level props: accepted, used, and silently dropped on
the way out.

Change outline

A picker in the sticky pane beside the field it colours — a native swatch with the OS
colour well and eyedropper, a text field, and HEX / RGB / HSL chips.

Three decisions that came from what a colour is, not from how pickers usually look:

chips are a VIEW hsl is quantised — #2f5bff is hsl(227 100% 59%), back out as #2d5bff. A chip that rewrote the value would shift the swatch every click and twice would be visibly a different colour.
currentColor resolves against the picker it has no pixel value; resolving against <body> (which sets no colour) showed black for dots that were not black.
one write per frame a colour input fires input on every pointer move — far more often than the screen refreshes.

Special things to note

  • Reversibility: site-only. Review focus is the first row: whether chips should ever
rewrite the value. Everything else follows from "they must not".
  • The rAF requirement found a bug worth naming. The pending colour lived in a ref that
was also assigned on every render, so the parent's stale value wiped the choice before
the frame fired and the picker snapped back. A render is not consent to overwrite.
  • Colour parsing stays out of the engine, deliberately. The engine hands the string to
CSS, so var(--brand), oklch(...) and color-mix(...) keep working — a component that
validated colour would refuse all three. The parser exists only to drive the control. A
value it cannot edit is passed through untouched and says so.
  • The round-trip is asserted, and it found the quantisation: exact through hex and rgb,
within three 255ths through an integer hsl triple, measured over a palette. The
algorithm is exact; the format is what rounds, and the tests say which is which.
  • The generated JSX is now checked by the repo's own compiler. A test hands the snippet
to tsc and requires no syntax error. TypeScript 7's runtime package exports no compiler
API (import ts from "typescript" returns just a version string), so this shells out to the
same binary pnpm typecheck runs. Verified to fail when the generator is broken — a
test that has never failed is not evidence of anything.
  • 248 tests (was 215), oxlint 0, registry ok, both changelog ledgers.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a dot color picker to the playground, with HEX, RGB, and HSL display options. Switching notation changes only how the color is shown.
    • Added selected colors to copied JSX snippets; CSS color values that can’t be edited are shown unchanged with an explanatory note.

The engine took a `color` all along and passed it straight to `color` on the CSS host and
`fill` on the SVG root. Nothing on the page reached it — and worse, `changedOptions` never
emitted `color`, so a visitor who picked a colour and pasted the result got a component
that drew in `currentColor` with nothing saying why. Same class as `spec` being flattened to
top-level props: a value that is accepted, used, and silently dropped on the way out.

THE NOTATION CHIPS ARE A VIEW, NEVER AN EDIT. hsl is quantised — `#2f5bff` is
`hsl(227 100% 59%)` and that spelled back out is `#2d5bff` — so a chip that rewrote the value
would shift the swatch by a couple of 255ths on every click, and twice would be visibly a
different colour. Clicking a chip changes how the value is shown, never what it is. A test
clicks every chip twice and requires the original hex back.

COMMITS ARE COALESCED INTO ONE FRAME. A colour input fires `input` on every pointer move —
far more often than the screen refreshes — and each event would re-render the playground and
repaint the field. One write per frame is what makes dragging feel like the thing under your
finger is the thing on screen. That requirement found a bug worth naming: the pending colour
lived in a ref that was ALSO assigned on every render, so the parent's stale value wiped the
choice before the frame fired and the picker snapped back to `currentColor`. A render is not
consent to overwrite. The ref now only carries a value that was actually committed.

`currentColor` is resolved against THE PICKER, not the document. It has no pixel value of its
own, and the swatch was resolving it against `<body>`, which sets no colour — so the swatch
showed black for dots that were not black. A swatch reporting the wrong colour is worse than
no swatch. A value the picker genuinely cannot edit (`var(--brand)`, `color-mix(...)`) is
passed through untouched and now says so, rather than being mangled.

COLOUR PARSING LIVES ON THE PAGE, NOT IN THE ENGINE, and that is the whole design: the
engine hands the string to CSS, so `var(--brand)` and `oklch(...)` keep working and a
component that validated colour would refuse both. The parser exists only to drive the
control. No library either — ~90 lines of specified arithmetic, and the site has no runtime
dependencies by policy.

The round-trip is asserted rather than assumed, and it found the quantisation: exact through
hex and rgb, within three 255ths through an integer hsl triple, measured over a palette. The
algorithm is exact; the FORMAT is what rounds, and the tests say which is which.

THE GENERATED JSX IS NOW CHECKED BY THE REPO'S OWN COMPILER. A test hands the snippet to
`tsc` and requires no syntax error — the strongest available form of "it compiles". The
TypeScript 7 runtime package exports no compiler API (`import ts from "typescript"` returns a
version string), so this shells out to the same binary `pnpm typecheck` runs. Verified to fail
when the generator is broken, which a test that has never failed is not evidence of.

248 tests (was 215), oxlint 0, registry ok, both changelog ledgers.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 39f61

The dot color picker works as described. Two small edge cases remain: an unusual initial color could produce an invalid copied snippet, and a lowercase currentcolor could show the wrong swatch. Both are quick fixes and neither blocks merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 39f61

Normal picker edits are normalized before rendering or copying. Caller-supplied initial colors bypass that normalization and are copied without source-string escaping, which can change the generated JSX. The current page supplies no initial values, so an attacker-controlled production path has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: Non-default color now passes through an unescaped source-string formatter. Caller-supplied initial.color bypasses picker normalization, so quotes or backslashes can change the generated JSX rather than remain color data. The formatter predates this PR, but its application to arbitrary color strings is new. The current page supplies no initial values; attacker control and downstream execution are not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is limited to a visitor's preview and copied source. A broader code-execution outcome would require an untrusted producer of initial color values and a consumer that later executes the generated JSX; neither connection is established for the current page.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional path exists from arbitrary initial.color through raw string wrapping into a JSX expression and then the clipboard. Quotes can escape the intended string representation. This establishes a source-generation integrity gap, not a verified production exploit or execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Picker text cannot directly introduce arbitrary source syntax: only successfully parsed colors are committed, and those are converted to hexadecimal strings. That control does not apply to initial options. Displaying generated output as React text also keeps the clipboard source separate from the live page's markup.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A pending frame captures its booking render's callback and has no owner or value-version check. This could matter under dynamic owner replacement or competing color updates, but the examined Playground binding has a stable state owner and does not establish such an authority transition. It is not retained as an active security concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize color as a properly escaped JavaScript string literal within the generated JSX expression. This would preserve arbitrary CSS strings as data without moving color parsing into the engine or relying on picker validation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare currentColor case-insensitively.

CSS keywords are case-insensitive. resolveComputed matches only the exact string "currentColor". If a user types currentcolor or CurrentColor, the code goes to the probe branch. The probe span then inherits its colour from <body>. The swatch then shows the wrong colour, which is the defect this function exists to prevent. The none and transparent checks have the same exact-case problem.

Escape colors supplied to snippet().

The ColorPicker normalizes valid edits to hexadecimal values, but Playground.initial can supply an arbitrary color string. That value reaches snippet() unchanged. Since str() adds raw quotes, a quote or backslash can produce invalid JSX.
