vk-gitlab reimplements the GitLab-facing side of GitLab Runner, and `vk node` runs the GitLab
jobs a hub places on it as GitLab Runner runs them. Their protocol behaviour (job request, job
update, incremental trace, retries and backoff, failure-reason mapping, token shortening,
system ID) and job execution follow GitLab Runner v19.5.0, from whose Go sources these are
adapted:
- in vk-gitlab: the API client in src/api/client.rs and its types in src/api/types.rs, the
job trace reporter in src/trace.rs, the JobResponse types in src/job.rs, the failure-reason
mapping in src/failure.rs, token shortening in src/secret.rs, the system ID in
src/system_id.rs, the request loop and health checks in src/poll.rs and the cache key
sanitizer in src/spec.rs;
the tests in tests/api_compat.rs, tests/trace_compat.rs, tests/job_fixtures.rs,
tests/spec_translate.rs and unit tests under src/ port test cases and fixtures from GitLab
Runner's test suite;
- in vk-driver: the job driver under src/node/jobs (output masking, trace, step scripts,
variables, build settings, artifact transfers, and their tests);
- in vk-agent: the archive rules in src/archive.rs;
- in vk-hub-proto: the failure-reason mapping in src/job.rs and the log line timestamps in
src/stamp.rs.
Each names the upstream file and test it comes from.

The variable expansion in vk-gitlab/src/spec.rs (`expand`) and vk-driver/src/node/jobs/vars.rs
is adapted from Go's os.Expand (src/os/env.go) and its tests, as gitlab-runner uses it:

The UEFI firmware vk embeds for its Windows (UEFI) guests is built from EDK II
(edk2-stable202608, OvmfPkg/CloudHv; https://github.com/tianocore/edk2), with the local
patches in .devcontainer/nix/firmware/; the variable store templates it seeds machines with
come from the same EDK II's OvmfPkg.

EDK II's bundled copy; https://www.openssl.org/), for Secure Boot and the TPM's measurements.
