Does Removing Old Drivers Prevent/Correct Problems or Just Fee up Space #458

The key correction is that Windows does not simply select the newest driver in the store. It ranks matching packages first; date/version break ties between equally ranked candidates. A better-ranked older package can therefore beat a newer one. Microsoft's driver selection documentation describes that order. However, an old package sitting unused in the Driver Store is not another active copy of the driver competing for CPU/RAM. Removing such packages mainly recovers disk space and removes rollback/reinstallation candidates. It shouldn't, by itself, make the currently loaded driver execute faster. A machine could improve if the cleanup also uninstalls a problematic active package and a different driver becomes active after reinstallation/reboot. That is a driver change, rather than a general benefit from fewer stored versions. Freeing space can also help a critically full system disk, which is a separate effect. To distinguish these in your friend's case, compare the active provider/version/INF in Device Manager before and after, not just the number of packages in the store. If the active driver stayed the same and disk space wasn't constrained, the anecdote alone doesn't establish a performance benefit from deleting old packages. I'd keep a known-good rollback option rather than treat periodic driver-store cleanup as a performance optimization. |

In reading it seems like "officially" it seems like there are no real issues with having older drivers (maybe 2 or 3 older copies) . They say the only reason to use DriverStoreExplorer and remove old drivers is for space. However in a recent conversation i had a friend tell me he thinks he has seen several cases where the system ran better after using DriverStoreExplorer to remove old drivers.
Thoughts?
If true any logic around when a system would do better removing the old drivers as Windows is supposed to pick the latest one when calling the driver.
love to hear different opinions on this.
Thanks
