This is the contract between the Electron renderer and the Python backend
(sentient serve). Backend packages implement it; the UI is built against it.

Model errors (#280). When a provider turns a request down for a known reason, error.message (and a task's
error, section 4) is one plain sentence that says what to do, e.g. OpenRouter's free models have reached today's limit. Add credits on openrouter.ai, wait until tomorrow, or pick another model in Settings > Models. This covers rate
limits (OpenRouter's free models per day and per minute), no credits (402), a key the provider rejects (401), a model
the provider keeps for coding tools, a model it doesn't have (an Ollama model that isn't downloaded), and a provider
that is down, slow or unreachable. The provider's raw reply only goes to the engine log; other failures keep their
text.
Context meter (#131). After every model call usage says how full the model's context is: context_used is the
prompt (the larger of what the provider reported and a local count with LiteLLM's bundled tokenizer, because Ollama
reports only the part of a prompt it had not cached) plus the reply, context_length what the model reads at once in
that role (Ollama's num_ctx as sent, capped at the model's maximum, or a cloud model's input window from LiteLLM's
bundled list; for a ChatGPT plan model, the window its plan's model list gave, if any), and context_percent the share, rounded. From 85% context_warning is a plain sentence, e.g. This chat is getting long for qwen3:8b (87% of what it reads at once). Older messages may be left out: start a new chat, or set a longer context length in Settings > Models. (cloud models: ..., so a new chat works best.). All four are null when
the context length is unknown (LM Studio, a model LiteLLM doesn't list). A call whose provider reported no token usage
still gets a usage event (tokens 0) when its context length is known, so the meter keeps working. Nothing is ever
blocked.

mcp_<server>_<tool>) or a plugin id from GET /api/tools (gmail, slack, mcp_<server>) meaning every tool of
that plugin; a tool's own rule beats its plugin's rule. Keys are trimmed and values lower-cased on save; anything else
is a 422. Remove a rule with PATCH /api/config {"tools": {"approvals": {"rules": {"<key>": null}}}}. Rules are
applied in code before every call and take effect at once:
never: the tool is not offered to the model (chat, voice, channels, tasks, subagents, proactivity, scripts) and is left out of planners' tool lists. A call made anyway does not run; itstool_resultis{error: "You've set Sentient to never use <name>. Where nobody can be asked the call does not run: a task run or swarm worker stops there and fails with"<name> is set to Ask, and tasks can't ask yet. Change it in Settings > Approvals & safety."(the run'serror, and the usualrun_failednotification;LoopResult.stopped_by_ruleandLoopResult.errorcarry the same text). Subagents and scripts refuse the call, and proactive look-ups leave the tool out.allow: runs without asking in modesaskandalways, except a purchase (effective risksendor higher whose approval wordingrisk_labelis "Purchase", such as a browser click on "Place order"), which asks every time. "Allow for this chat" never covers a purchase.allowdoes not widen what scripts may call (section 11): they still only read.- Purchases ask in every approvals mode,
offincluded (onlybrowser.confirm_purchases: falseturns that off), and scripts refuse them in every mode. Rules are read again right before a tool runs and on every script tool call, so a rule changed while a call waits for approval, or while a script runs, applies to it. Engine helpers:app.approvals.rule(tool),app.approvals.is_never(tool),app.approvals.is_hidden(tool)(never rules plus Read only connections, section 5),app.approvals.read_only_refusal(tool, risk, registry),await app.approvals.decide(tool, session_id, risk, arguments, ctx) -> bool, pure helpers insentient.tools.rules.
When a chat message reads like a standing "never" or "ask me first" about an action ("never delete my emails", "don't post to Slack without asking me", "always ask before sending money"), Sentient proposes the matching lasting rule instead of only remembering it, because anything said once in a chat can be lost when the conversation is summarized. Only the user's click creates the rule; the model only maps words to rule keys and can never create, accept or loosen a rule.
- Detection (
sentient.agent.chat_rules), on the user's message and on steer messages, in every chat channel: a deterministic pre-filter (never, don't, do not, must not, always ask, ask me first, without asking...; "don't ask me" and "stop asking" never count); then tools whose names or descriptions share a word with the message; then one shortfast-role prompt that returns{"keys": [...], "rule": "never"|"ask"}, parsed tolerantly. Keys must be tool names or app ids among those candidates (checked in code). Words that name a condition ("without asking me", "always ask") make the ruleask. Keys an equal or stricter rule already covers (also a pending proposal in the same chat) are dropped. A whole app is proposed only when the words name no specific action ("never use Slack", "don't touch my Notion"); when they name one (delete, send, post, pay, share, trash, archive...), an app key is replaced in code by that app's tools whose names match the action, or dropped when none do ("never delete my emails" -> Gmail > Trash, never all of Gmail). Each app is judged by the instruction that mentions it ("never delete my emails. never use Slack" gives Gmail > Trash and all of Slack), and a word after "my" or a noun is an object, not an action ("my email messages" is not "message"). Nothing left, no proposal. A message that fails the pre-filter or has no matching tools never calls a model. The check runs before the reply's model call (it waits at most 20 s; a slower check finishes in the background, and until it does every tool it is weighing asks first in that chat). - Until the user decides, a pending proposal makes its chat ask before every matched tool (
approval_request), even under an Allow rule, with approvals modeoffand after "Allow for this chat"; subagents of that chat refuse the call. It is saved with the chat, so it survives a restart and summarizing, and only ever adds a question. - RuleProposal:
{id, session_id, message_id, said, rule: "never"|"ask", keys: string[], targets: [{key, app, tool, label}], status: "pending"|"accepted"|"declined", created_at, decided_at}.saidis the user's matching words (at most 300 characters);labelis"Gmail > Trash"for a tool or"Gmail"for a whole app;message_idis the user message (or steer message) it came from. Either ends the chat's extra asking. 404 for an unknown id, 409 once answered. Claude through your own Claude Code (experimental, #206, ADR 0022). With
models.experimental_claude_codeon, a modelclaude-code/<name>(any Claude Code model alias or full name) is answered by theclaudeprogram on this computer under the user's own login, outside LiteLLM. Each reply startsclaude -p --input-format stream-json --output-format stream-json --verbose --include-partial-messages --model <name> --tools "" --disallowedTools <its built-ins> --permission-mode dontAsk --setting-sources= --strict-mcp-config --disable-slash-commands --no-session-persistence --max-turns 1 --system-prompt-file <file> [--mcp-config <file>] [--effort <role's reasoning>]in a scratch folder under~/.sentient/tmp/claude-code/, removed once Claude Code and its tool bridge have exited (retried for a few seconds while Windows still holds it; folders older than an hour are swept when the engine starts). The environment is the engine's minus the window token and everything that would make Claude Code use something other than the plan login (everyANTHROPIC_*,CLAUDE_CODE_USE_*andCLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_*variable,CLAUDE_CODE_SIMPLE,CLAUDE_CODE_SDK_HAS_HOST_AUTH_REFRESH;CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIRis kept), withENABLE_TOOL_SEARCH=false. The conversation goes in as one stream-json user message (a transcript with<user>,<assistant>,<tool_call>and<tool_result>blocks; images as image blocks). Sentient's tools are offered by a stdio MCP server namedsentient(sentient/llm/claude_code_tools.py, orsentient-engine claude-code-toolsin an installed app) that lists them and answers every call with an error: Claude'smcp__sentient__<tool>requests come back as ordinary tool calls for the agent loop. Thesystem/initevent must list onlymcp__sentient__*tools plus EndConversation and ToolSearch, or the process is killed and the reply fails with a plain message. Text and thinking stream fromstream_eventdeltas; usage comes from the assistant message orresult(no price: the plan pays). Only a chat reply orPOST /api/models/testmay use it: other callers (tasks, subagents, proactivity, follow-ups, dreaming, briefs, memory notes, titles, summaries) get "Claude Code only answers your chats..." so the role's fallbacks are tried, and embeddings fail with a plain message. The refusal names the setting to change for theplannerrole ("...so it can't plan tasks. Pick a planner model in Settings > Models.") and theexecutorrole ("...Pick an executor model..."). It is aModelRefused(aProviderError); when every model of a role refused, that sentence is the error as is, so a task that fails this way has it as itserror(instead of "Sorry, the AI model is unavailable right now...") and a task route answers503with it asdetail. The check-up reports aclaude-code/model without calling it (failfor roles other than primary, voice and vision). Stop everything kills every running Claude Code process tree. -
GET /api/secrets→[{name, set: bool, source: "keychain"|"env"|null, kind: "provider"|"integration"}]for every provider + integration secret name -
PUT /api/secrets/{name}{value}→{ok}(stored in OS keychain; never echoed back).chatgpt→ 400: it is a sign-in, not a key. -
DELETE /api/secrets/{name}→{ok}. Forchatgptthis signs out (see below).
Ways to use AI plans people already pay for. Every key lands in the keychain under the provider's id (anthropic,
openrouter, nous), the same entry a pasted key uses, so DELETE /api/secrets/{id} disconnects. A ChatGPT sign-in
is kept under chatgpt.
- Claude Max and Team plans include monthly API credits, spent through an ordinary Anthropic API key. Apps may not
sign in with a Claude account, so there is no sign-in flow: the window shows the steps to claim the credits in the
Claude Console, stores the key with
PUT /api/secrets/anthropicand checks it. - OpenRouter has a browser sign-in for apps on the user's computer (OAuth with PKCE, S256). The callback is the
integrations' shared loopback listener (
http://127.0.0.1:<port>/oauth/callback, port fromintegrations.oauth_redirect_port); thestatevalue routes it. The code is swapped for a key athttps://openrouter.ai/api/v1/auth/keys. A forged, expired or reusedstateis refused and nothing is stored. - ChatGPT plans (Plus and Pro, issue #205) use Sign in with ChatGPT, which OpenAI offers to open-source and
locally run apps (https://developers.openai.com/siwc/quickstart). OAuth with PKCE (S256),
stateandnonceagainsthttps://auth.openai.com/api/accounts/authorizeand.../oauth/token, scopesopenid profile email offline_access resource.invoke chatgpt.tokens.use.direct,resource=https://api.openai.com/v1, and the same loopback listener as OpenRouter (only its port may change between sign-ins). The first sign-in on a computer registers Sentient:client_id=dynamic_agent_clientwithagent_name_hint=Sentient; the callback brings the issued client id, kept in store meta (chatgpt.client_id) and reused afterwards. Every sign-in sendsext_agent_host_id, a randomurn:uuid:made once per computer (store metachatgpt.host_id). The callback is refused unless the issued client id matches, the granted scopes includechatgpt.tokens.use.direct, and an ID token is present and passes its RS256 signature (OpenAI's published keys), issuer, audience, expiry and nonce checks. Tokens go to the keychain entrychatgpt({client_id, access_token, refresh_token, expires_at, scope, email}, split over several entries when long). The access token is renewed 5 minutes before it runs out (or once after a 401), one refresh at a time because the refresh token rotates; a final refresh error (invalid_grant,refresh_token_reusedand the like) removes the sign-in, anything else keeps it for the next try. Sign-out revokes the refresh token (best effort) and removes the entry.models.chatgpt_client_id(defaultdynamic_agent_client) can hold a client id from OpenAI instead, or be empty to turn the sign-in off. Models arechatgpt/<slug>fromGET https://api.openai.com/v1/models(entries withvisibility: "list", in OpenAI's order). They don't go through LiteLLM:sentient/llm/responses.pysendsPOST /v1/responseswith the access token, alwaysstream: trueandstore: false, the leading system prompts asinstructions(later ones asdevelopermessages), function tools, andreasoningfrom the role's effort; nevertemperature,max_output_tokens,previous_response_idor other refused fields. Text and JSON jobs collect the stream. Tool call ids are the Responsescall_id. Plan usage has no embedding models (embedwith achatgpt/model fails). A usage limit (subscription_sharing_usage_limit_exceeded, 429 or mid-streamresponse.failed) becomes "Usage limit reached" with the Manage usage link (https://chatgpt.com/settings/usage); there is no silent switch to another way of paying, only the user's own fallbacks. - Nous Portal has no sign-in for other apps, so it takes an API key. Models are
nous/<model>, sent through LiteLLM's OpenAI-compatible client tohttps://inference-api.nousresearch.com/v1(override withmodels.providers.nous.api_base; env fallbackNOUS_API_KEY).

and "Stuck runs" below). kind says why it waits; reason is set for stuck only. last_activity_at is when the run
last showed any sign of work (a progress update, or streamed model output; falls back to execution_start_time).
memory_sources (section 2, "Memory sources") are the memories the run had in mind: facts recalled into its executor
prompt (via: "prompt") and facts memory_recall / memory_search_by_source returned that the model read
(via: "tool"). Saved on the run as they are found, merged across pauses (questions, limits, stuck), resumes and
restarts, and copied to a Retry that continues the transcript; [] when none, and for swarm and one-call runs.
Already approved one-call tasks (a follow-up's Send, section 6) carry original_context.fixed_call = {tool, arguments, done_text} and a one-step plan. They are created pending, start a run at once with no planner and no executor model,
and the run makes exactly that call with exactly those arguments (tool_call, tool_result, final_answer updates). A
lasting Never rule on the tool or its app fails the run with the rule's message; a tool error fails it with that error. A
run interrupted by a restart after the call started is not repeated: it fails and asks the user to check. Backend API:
await app.tasks.create_approved_call(name, tool, arguments, *, step, description=None, source, original_context, done_text, schedule=None, quiet=False) → Task. With a recurring schedule the task is created active with its next run computed
and makes the same call at each run (the Daily Brief, section 6); with quiet (fixed_call.quiet: true) a finished run
sends no "Task completed" notification because the tool sends its own (failures still notify), and its result is the done
text with no model call.
Imported tasks (section 19) carry original_context.imported_from ("hermes"), source: "import", enabled: false
and an empty plan, so they never run as they are. The first Resume (PATCH {enabled: true}) of such a task plans it:
it goes to planning and then approval_pending like a new task, keeping its schedule. A script task whose script only
notifies skips the planner and goes straight to approval_pending with a one-step plan describing the script (or to
active when tasks.require_plan_approval is off). POST /run-now on it returns 409 until it has a plan. Backend API:
await app.tasks.create_imported(*, name, prompt, schedule, script=None, context=None, deliver_to=None) → Task.

Behaviour notes:
- Swarm tasks (
is_swarm: true) skip approval (v2):planning → processing → completed|completed_with_errors|error. PATCHwith a newschedule, a status ofactive/pending, orenabled: truerecomputesnext_execution_at.run-nowon a one-off task creates a new run immediately; on a swarm task it re-orchestrates.- Triggered tasks accept events while a previous run is still
processing(each event gets its own run). - Triggered tasks fire from the
source.itemsdomain event for every origin (section 16). Each task handles an item id at most once, whichever path delivers it. Forsource: "webhook"thefiltercan name fields of the JSON body directly ({"status": "failed"}) as well as item fields (name,body.status). - Task notification
payload.eventvalues:approval_needed,clarification_needed,planning_failed,run_completed,run_failed(withrun_id),disabled,script_alert(withresult),script_failed,script_recovered,question(withrun_id,question,options; a stuck run addsstuck: trueandreason; laterstatus: "answered"|"cancelled"andanswer),caught_up(withreason,ran,skipped; see "Missed runs"). - Every way a run ends sends a notification or leaves a visible status: a run that crashes inside Sentient ends
errorwithSomething went wrong inside Sentient while running this task.and the usualrun_failednotification. - Chat tools (plugin
tasks):create_task_from_prompt,search_tasks,get_task_status(results includescript),update_task(task_id, name?, description?, enabled?, schedule?, script_code?, script_condition?, script_then?)(write, internal; changed script code goes back toapproval_pendingwhentasks.require_plan_approval), andrequest_task_change(task_id, message)(write, internal; same asPOST /chat). - On restart, runs left
processingresume from their transcript checkpoint (tasks.resume_interrupted_runs), else they end with errorInterrupted by restart. Runswaiting_for_userare left alone: they keep waiting, with their question, until answered or cancelled. - Disconnecting an integration sets
enabled: falseon tasks whose plan or trigger uses it (instead of v2's delete) and sends a notification.
A task's deliver_to decides which messaging apps (section 14) get its notifications: run results and failures,
script alerts and failures, questions from its runs, plans waiting for approval and, for the Daily and Evening Brief
tasks, the brief itself. The app always gets them.
"default": paired chats with delivery on, as thechannels.deliver_*switches say (the behaviour before #227)."desktop": the app only; nothing goes to a messaging app.[{channel, chat_id}]: only these paired chats, whatever their own delivery switch and thechannels.deliver_*switches say.{"channel": "whatsapp", "chat_id": "self"}is the WhatsApp "Message yourself" chat of whichever number is linked. A chat that is not paired (or a channel that is not connected) is skipped. If the task's setting can't be read, nothing goes to a messaging app.rerunkeeps it. Backend API:await app.tasks.delivery_for(task_id)→"default" | "desktop" | [...].
- Inside a task run (never in chat, subagents, swarm workers or the planner) the executor can call
ask_user(question: str, options: list[str] | None = None)(plugintask_questions, riskwrite, internal). It is meant only for choices the run cannot make on its own; confirming risky actions stays with approvals.optionsare cleaned to at most 6 short, distinct choices. One question per round (a second call in the same round gets an error) and at most 5 per run. - The loop stops after that round without another model call. The run's transcript and
{question, options, tool_call_id, asked_at}are stored on the run in SQLite and the run becomeswaiting_for_user. The task becomeswaiting_for_usertoo, unless another run of it is stillprocessing(it switches once that run ends). The progress log getsWaiting for your answer: ...;task.updatedcarries the run'spending_question. - A notification is created:
kind: "task", title"<task name> needs your answer",message= the question,payload: {task_id, event: "question", run_id, question, options}. - Answering (
POST .../answer, a button, or a reply to the question message in a paired chat) puts the answer in place of theask_usertool result, logsYou answered: ..., sets the notification'spayload.status = "answered"(and marks it read), moves run and task back toprocessingand continues the run without the restart note. - A run that read outside content and then tries to send asks the same way (section 10, "Outside content"):
the question is
This task read content from <app>, so it checks with you before anything leaves Sentient. OK to use <tool>(<details>)?withoptions: ["Yes, go ahead", "No, stop the task"].Yes, go aheadoryes(any case, a final./!ignored) runs exactly the held call once when the run continues (its result replaces the placeholder; a restart in the middle never repeats it); any other answer fails the run withYou said no, so the task stopped without doing that step.and the usualTask failednotification.pending_questionalso storesuntrusted_call: trueandstop_error; the API shows only{question, options, asked_at}. A run asks one question at a time: its ownask_userquestion first, then a held call, then a stuck step (a stuck step in the same round shows up again later if it still is). - While a task waits:
approve,chat,run-nowandretryon a one-off task return 409; recurring tasks are not started by the scheduler until the answer arrives; triggered tasks keep accepting events (each in its own run) and return towaiting_for_userwhen those runs end.
Every task run has limits, checked deterministically (no model decides). A single run that reaches its step, time,
token or cost limit pauses and asks, using the same waiting_for_user machinery as ask_user above: the run's
pending_question is the question below with options: ["Keep going", "Stop here"], and the same
"<task name> needs your answer" notification (payload.event: "question") is sent. The run's transcript is kept.
| Limit | Config (tasks.*) |
Default | Question | Error after "Stop here" |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steps (model rounds) | max_tool_rounds |
40 | This task has used 40 steps and isn't finished yet. Keep going for another 40 steps, or stop here? |

| Active time | run_timeout_minutes |

2000000 | This task has used 2,000,400 tokens of your 2,000,000 token limit and isn't finished yet. Keep going for another 2,000,000 tokens, or stop here? |
Stopped after using 2,000,400 tokens without finishing. The limit for one run is 2,000,000 tokens. ... |
| Spend on cloud models | max_cost_per_run_usd |
5.0 | This task has used $5.02 of your $5.00 limit and isn't finished yet. Keep going for another $5.00, or stop here? |
Stopped after spending about $5.02 on the model without finishing. The limit for one run is $5.00. ... |
- Answering
Keep going(any case, surrounding spaces and a final./!ignored) raises that limit by its original amount for this run only and continues from the transcript (no restart note). Any other answer, includingStop here, fails the run: statuserrorwith the message above, anerrorprogress update and the usualTask failednotification (payload.event: "run_failed"). Cancel works as for any waiting run. - The run keeps
limits: {base, max, used}(each{steps, seconds, tokens, cost_usd}) intask_runs.limits, saved whenever the run pauses, ends or is interrupted (quit or Cancel), and together with the resume when a limit is raised, so used amounts and raised limits carry across questions and restarts.pending_questionalso storeslimit(steps|seconds|tokens|cost_usd) andstop_error; the API shows only{question, options, asked_at}. - Time counts only while the run is working, never while it waits for an answer. Time, tokens and cost are checked
before each model call, so a run goes at most one call past its limit. A tool or model call still running 120 s
after the time limit (
executor.HARD_DEADLINE_GRACE_S) is cancelled and the run asks the time question; the transcript keeps every finished step and the cancelled call is dropped, so "Keep going" simply tries it again. Steps include the executor's "carry on" nudges. Tokens and cost of models with a local prefix (ollama,ollama_chat,lm_studio,llamafile,vllm,hosted_vllm) are not counted. Streamed calls to every model except Ollama ask for usage (stream_options.include_usage). Cost uses LiteLLM's price list and only adds up for models whose price it knows.0turns a token or cost limit off. A retry starts with fresh limits. - Repeated calls (
tools.repeated_call_limit, default 3) that keep getting the same error make the run stuck (below). Ones that keep getting the same working result never ask: the run fails at once withStopped because the same step kept repeating: file_read ran 3 times with the same details and got the same result each time. Edit the task to add what it needs, or retry it. - Swarm runs and fixed-call runs do not ask. A swarm's workers share one token and cost limit and stop with an error
when it runs out (the swarm finishes
completed_with_errors);run_timeout_minutesstops the whole swarm or fixed call withStopped after 30 minutes without finishing. ....
A single run that stops getting anywhere pauses and says why instead of failing silently (sentient/tasks/stuck.py).
It reuses the waiting_for_user pause (not a new status), so restarts, Cancel, notifications and answering from a paired
chat work as for any question. Checked deterministically; no model decides.

{"error": "...", "needs_user": "<plain reason>"}. - The executor is told to call
ask_userwhen only the user can get past a step (a login, a CAPTCHA, a code). - Swarm workers and fixed-call runs are not watched; they have their own time limit.
Scheduled runs (active recurring and pending one-off tasks) whose time passed while the computer was off or asleep,
Sentient was not running, or Stop everything was on, are handled on the next scheduler tick (sentient/tasks/catchup.py).
A run counts as missed when it is more than max(300, 3 × tasks.tick_seconds) seconds late.
- Each missed task follows its schedule's
catch_up: absent (auto) runs it once now if it is less thantasks.catch_up_window_hours(default 12; 0 always skips) late, else skips it;"run"always runs it once;"skip"never catches up. Other values are dropped when the schedule is saved; triggered schedules have none. - Never a backlog: a recurring task's next time is computed from now, so missed occurrences are not replayed.
A skipped recurring task moves to its next time and stays
active. A skipped one-off task becomeserrorwithSkipped: it was due Sep 14, 18:30, while the computer was off or asleep. Choose Run now if you still want it. intervalschedules (every N minutes) run once and are not reported, since their next check is due anyway; withcatch_up: "skip"the missed check is skipped (and reported) instead.- Quiet fixed-call tasks (the Daily and Evening Brief, section 6) follow the same rules but only run while it is still the local day they were due (a brief is about its day; an evening brief missed at 21:00 is skipped at 01:00), and are never listed in the catch-up notification: the brief is its own notification, and a skipped one just moves to its next time.
- One notification per catch-up:
kind: "task", titleCaught up after sleep: ran 1, skipped 2(orafter Sentient was offon startup, after resumingafter Stop everything), messageRan once now: 'A'.and/orSkipped: 'B', 'C'. Open one and choose Run now if you still want it.,payload: {event: "caught_up", reason: "start"|"sleep"|"resume", ran: [{task_id, name, due_at}], skipped: [...], task_id?}(task_idwhen only one task is listed). - Waking from sleep is a jump of the wall clock between scheduler ticks of more than
tick_seconds+ 120 s. - While Stop everything is on nothing is caught up; it happens on the first tick after Resume.

server_url) and is kept when a server with the same name and URL is added (in this setup or another), then used. It is dropped when the URL differs, and an older record withoutserver_urlis dropped only when this setup had the server at another URL. Read only connections (#141, ADR 0016 amendment). integrations.read_only lists the app ids (gmail, github,
mcp_<server>) set to Read only; the routes above keep it, and it is hidden in Settings. It is read on every check, so a
switch applies at once, also to a chat waiting for approval and to a running script. For a Read only connection, every
tool whose effective risk is above read works like a never rule: tools whose risk can't be read are not offered
on any surface or listed for planners (GET /api/tools still lists them), and a call made anyway does not run, even
with an allow rule, approvals mode off or "Allow for this chat". Its tool_result is
{error: "<App> is set to Read only, so Sentient can look things up there but can't change, send or delete anything. \"<Tool>\" was not done. Change this in Integrations."};
a task run with one fixed call fails with that text, and a script gets it as a refusal. A tool whose risk depends on its
arguments (per_call, browser-like risk_fn) stays offered and only calls above read are refused. For an MCP tool
that runs other tools by slug (tool_slug, action_slug or slug next to arguments), each slug's verb sets the
risk: GET, LIST, FETCH, SEARCH, FIND, READ, RETRIEVE, QUERY, VIEW, DESCRIBE, LOOKUP, COUNT read;
SEND, REPLY, FORWARD, POST, DELETE, REMOVE, TRASH, SHARE, INVITE... send; EXECUTE, RUN exec; other
known changes write; a slug with no known verb counts as write. The first verb after the app name decides, a later
verb that changes things raises it, whatever the server's own hints say, and a call is read only when every slug is a look-up (then approvals mode "ask"
no longer asks for it). The chat's system prompt names the connected Read only apps so the model can say why it
can't act.

Read-only; raisesIntegrationErrorwhen the service call fails. Gmail pages through the thread listing (at most 5 pages of 50) and drops threads whose newest message is newer than the idle cutoff before they count towardlimit, so busy threads can't crowd out quiet ones. IMAP runs two capped searches per mailbox (INBOX and Sent): quiet messages from the max age up to the idle cutoff (newest 150) and recent messages after it (newest 400, to see which conversations are still active), and reads the headers of both.
Item shapes. gmail: {id, thread_id, from, sender_email, to, subject, snippet, body, date, labels, url};

One-time codes and sign-in links in email. While integrations.hide_one_time_codes is on (the default), every gmail
and email_imap item (tool results, polls, change feeds, IMAP push, follow-up threads) has one-time codes, verification
and 2FA codes, magic sign-in links and password reset links in its subject, snippet and body replaced with
[one-time code hidden], [sign-in link hidden] or [password reset link hidden] before it leaves the plugin
(sentient/integrations/redact.py). Detection is deterministic: a code needs a sign-in or verification cue nearby
(one-time or OTP, verification, security, sign-in or login, 2FA, two-factor, authentication, passcode, "use this code
to", "enter this code", "is your ... code", or a code alone on the line after such a cue) or a sign-in or reset subject
or sender; a link must carry a token-like value and look like sign-in or reset (its path, the words before it, or the
email's subject). Booking, order, ticket, reservation, PNR and reference codes are always kept, even when numeric, and
an email whose subject is a booking or order (with no sign-in cue) keeps all its codes. Order numbers, dates, prices,
phone numbers and ordinary links are left alone. The proactive pipeline and follow-ups
run the same masking again before their prompts. The original stays in the user's mail app (url for Gmail).

email_imap), webhook (then event_type is the hook id and hook_name is set) or heartbeat.
Notification title names what the suggestion is about: "Gmail: Jane Doe: Meeting Tuesday?", "Webhook: Deploy alerts",
"Suggestion from Check-in"; message is the suggestion description.
Suggestions produced during proactivity.quiet_hours are held and delivered as notifications when quiet hours end (dropped after 24 h).
One item produces at most one suggestion, and a suggestion that repeats one still pending is dropped.
Pending suggestions nobody acted on expire after proactivity.suggestion_ttl_hours (check-ins after 12 h at most; calendar
suggestions as soon as the event starts): payload.status becomes expired (notification.updated) and the notification is marked read.
The heartbeat (heartbeat_minutes > 0) looks at upcoming calendar events, tasks needing attention, expiring short-term
memories, the time of day and app.user_model.context_for; the model answers NO_REPLY unless one nudge is worth it.
It does not run during quiet hours and makes at most proactivity.heartbeat_daily_cap suggestions per day.
Follow-ups (proactivity.followups, on unless proactivity is off) notice dropped email threads in the email accounts
listed in followups.sources (default ["gmail", "email_imap"]; only accounts that are both listed and connected are read,
independent of proactivity.sources) through app.integrations.recent_threads (section 5). The check runs once a day from 08:00 in the user's timezone,
and in the background after POST /api/proactivity/poll-now. Two kinds:
waiting_on_you: the newest message is from someone else, has you inTo(not only Cc/Bcc), and has had no answer forwaiting_on_you_days(3).waiting_on_them: your own newest message asked something or asked for something and has had no answer forwaiting_on_them_days(4).
Deterministic filters run first and skip: no-reply and notification senders, mailing lists and bulk mail (List-Unsubscribe,
List-Id, Precedence: bulk|list|junk, Auto-Submitted, Gmail Promotions/Social/Updates/Forums), calendar invites and
auto-replies, mail from your own addresses, notes to yourself, short thank-you notes, threads quiet for more than
max_age_days (21), and any thread already suggested, dismissed or judged by the model in the same state (dedupe on thread id
plus newest message id, so a new message makes it eligible again). At most 10 threads per check reach the fast model, which
answers {needs_follow_up, about, draft, confidence} (parsed loosely; an unusable answer, or a draft with a placeholder
such as [day], {name}, <date>, XX, TBD or (your name), is dropped and retried at the next check, because the
draft is sent exactly as written);
at most max_suggestions (3) suggestions per check, and the learned per-type threshold applies. Nothing is ever sent by the
check itself.
Follow-up suggestion: suggestion_type follow_up_reply or follow_up_nudge, source_event.event_type: "follow_up",
source_event.item_id is <thread id>:<newest message id>, description is a plain title
("Priya is waiting for your reply about the invoice", "No reply from Rohan about Saturday yet"), the notification
message is the description followed by the draft as a quote, and the suggestion carries
"follow_up": {"kind": "waiting_on_you|waiting_on_them", "person": "Priya Shah", "person_email": "priya@acme.example",
"to": "priya@acme.example", "subject": "Re: Invoice for September", "draft": "Hi Priya, ...", "days_waiting": 4,
"thread_id": "...", "message_id": "<gmail id or IMAP uid>", "mailbox": "INBOX (IMAP only)"}Approving it (the card's Send reply / Send nudge, which shows the exact draft) is the approval of that one send:
it creates an already approved task (app.tasks.create_approved_call, section 4) that runs right away, whatever
tasks.require_plan_approval says, and makes exactly one call with the draft unchanged: gmail_reply {message_id, body} in
the same thread, or email_imap_send {to, subject, body, reply_to_message_id?}. No model is involved in the send. A lasting
Never rule on that tool or its app (tools.approvals.rules) still applies: the run fails with the rule's message and
nothing is sent.

A short morning digest, and an optional evening wrap-up, each an ordinary recurring task the user can see, edit, pause or
delete in Tasks. Setting one up (the "Set up my Daily Brief" button, the card's menu, or daily_brief: true at
onboarding for the morning one) creates one already approved task through app.tasks.create_approved_call with a
recurring schedule and fixed_call = {tool: "daily_brief_build", arguments: {kind}, quiet: true}
(original_context = {source: "brief", brief: kind}):
| kind | Task name | Default schedule | Task id in meta |
|---|---|---|---|
morning |
Daily Brief | weekdays at 07:30 local | brief.task_id |
evening |
Evening Brief | every day at 21:00 local | brief.evening_task_id |
The user set up that exact call, so it does not wait for plan approval. Deleting a task turns that brief off. Pausing
(enabled: false) and changing the schedule work like any task (PATCH /api/tasks/{id}), and Stop everything pauses
them like every scheduled task. A quiet run sends no "Task completed" notification and no model writes its report (the
run's result summary is the done text, "Your Daily Brief is ready."). A brief missed while the computer was off or asleep
runs once if it is less than tasks.catch_up_window_hours late and still the same day, otherwise it is skipped quietly
(section 4, "Missed runs").
Each run reads, using only read tools and never one behind an Ask or Never rule (tools.approvals.rules). Morning
sections:
calendar: today's events fromgcal_list_eventsthat are not over yet (HH:MM Title (place)), when Google Calendar is connected.email: pending proactive suggestions fromgmail/email_imap(follow-ups included), then unread important Gmail from the last two days that no suggestion covers. Thefastmodel may shorten each unread email to one line (proactivity.brief.summarize_emails, one call for all of them, numbered lines parsed loosely; the sender and subject are kept when an answer is unusable). The model never adds or removes lines.tasks: tasks waiting for the user (a question, a plan to approve, answers to give, a failure), most urgent first, then tasks due later today. The briefs' own tasks are left out of every section.weather:weather_currentforassistant.location(skipped without a city).news: one headline per topic inproactivity.brief.news_topics(up to 3) fromnews_search.
Evening sections (no model call at all):
done: tasks whose latest run today failed (first, "Name: failed") or finished ("Name: done").sent: runs that finished today and sent email: an approved follow-up (fixed_call.toolisgmail_reply,gmail_sendoremail_imap_send; "Send reply to Priya: ..." becomes "Sent reply to Priya: ...") or a run that called one of those tools.files:files_createdof runs that finished today, then files changed today in the files folder (files/uploads/andfiles/outputs/tool-*.txtleft out).waiting: tasks waiting for the user (except ones that failed today, already underdone) and pending suggestions.tomorrow: tomorrow's first 3 events fromgcal_list_events.
Sections come from proactivity.brief.sections (default calendar, email, tasks, weather; news needs topics) and
proactivity.brief.evening_sections (default all five). They are ordered by their learned score
(daily_brief_<section> in the proactivity preferences), best liked first. A section may show 3 lines (weather 1, news,
sent and files 2), one more with a score of 3 or above and one fewer with -3 or below (never fewer than 1). The brief takes
one line from every section first, then fills up in section order, up to proactivity.brief.max_items (7) lines.
Delivery is a brief notification. One brief shows at a time: a new one (of either kind) expires the brief still showing.
brief notification payload: {"brief": Brief, "status": "active|expired", "task_id": "..."}; message is the brief as

user's local day: payload.status becomes expired (notification.updated) and it is marked read. The desktop shows the
brief as a card above the feed rather than as a feed row, and marks it read when the card shows it. Paired chats with
deliver on receive it as text with links (channels.deliver_briefs, section 14). The daily_brief_today tool (read,
optional kind) returns the brief showing as plain lines, or builds one without delivering it, so "read my brief" works
in chat, by voice and in paired chats; daily_brief_build (internal write, kind) makes and delivers one now. Neither is
offered to proactive look-ups.

A memory that did not come from the user's own words in a clean chat is held: status: "pending" for facts, status
pending for insights (section 15). Held: facts extracted after a turn of a chat marked untrusted (section 10,
"Outside content") and facts saved when such a chat is compressed; memory_remember while ToolContext.untrusted
is set or ToolContext.origin is unprompted; document imports; Hermes imports (section 19); insights a refresh draws
only from outside material (section 15). A held memory is never in a prompt, memory_recall,
memory_search_by_source, GET /api/memories, topics, the graph, proactivity, a user-model refresh or dreaming, and
a held fact never updates or deletes another fact (duplicates of any fact are skipped). Only these routes move one
out of pending; no model output can:
GET /api/memories/review→{items: [ReviewItem], count, expire_days}newest first (at most 500 facts and 500 insights;countcovers all of them). Chats that read outside content reach no other chat in other ways either:
- conversation summaries carry the chat's mark (
summaries.untrusted, set fromsessions.untrustedwhen written; older rows take it from their chat at startup), and a summary also counts as marked while its chat is marked now.EpisodicMemory.search, used byhistory_semantic_searchand proactive look-ups, leaves them out (before ranking, so they never crowd out clean ones); the user still sees them inGET /api/memories/summaries. - profile upkeep (MEMORY.md and USER.md) reads only active facts and unmarked summaries.
memory_search_historyandhistory_time_searchstill find the messages, but when a result comes from another chat withsessions.untrustedset they setToolContext.untrustedto that app, so the run is marked as if it had read the content itself (section 10).
Held memories nobody reviewed are deleted after memory.review_expire_days (default 30, checked with the hourly
expiry purge), with an info notification titled "Memory review". DELETE /api/memories/source/{source} removes held
facts of that source too. Engine: sentient.memory.review (for_context(ctx), note(from, snippet, session_id),
inbox, approve, discard, approve_from, expire); FactMemory.remember(..., review=note) holds a fact.
Engine notes: recall used by the system prompt and memory_recall is hybrid (same ranking as q above) and
counts each recalled fact (facts.recall_count, last_recalled_at; dreaming promotes often-recalled short-term
facts). Bulk and consolidation changes publish memory.updated with reason (merged | contradicted |
promoted | expired) and, for merges/contradictions, merged_into / superseded_by.

voice.vad_silence_msof silence ends an utterance, sounds shorter thanvoice.vad_min_speech_msare ignored, utterances are cut atvoice.vad_max_utterance_s. - Reply text is split into sentences as it streams; each sentence is synthesized as soon as it is complete, so the first audio arrives while the model is still writing. The first chunk of a reply may end at a clause boundary (comma, semicolon, colon, dash) once it is
voice.tts_first_clause_charslong (default 40, 0 = sentences only). - Opening a session warms up STT and TTS in the background;
voice.preload_on_startloads them when Sentient starts. Loaded models stay in memory. interrupt, or ~300 ms of the user speaking whilestateisspeaking(whenvoice.barge_inis on), stops synthesis and sending immediately; the model's text keeps streaming and is saved.- A new utterance (or
text) while a turn is still running cancels it (donewithcancelled: true, then the newtranscript). An utterance that ends while the previous one is still being transcribed is merged with it. - On
approval_requestthe assistant also says "I need your approval to use . Say yes or no."; a spoken yes/no (orapproval.respond) answers it. Other speech cancels the turn and starts a new one. - If the socket drops mid-turn, speech stops but the reply finishes so the transcript is persisted.

WS /wsclient messagechat.steer{session_id, text}. If a reply is running for that session, the text is queued and applied at the next model round: it is persisted as a user message and the model sees it before continuing. If no reply is running it behaves exactly likechat.send.- Server events:
steer_ack{session_id, queued: bool, client_id}right away, thenuser_interjection{text}(withsession_id,turn_id) when the model receives it. A steer that arrives after the final round starts a new turn. chat.sendwhile a reply is running is treated aschat.steer(no more "A reply is already in progress" error). Exception: achat.sendwithattachmentsnever steers; it starts a new turn once the running one finishes.- A steer that arrives while the final answer is still streaming is applied too: that answer is kept (persisted as an
assistant message), the interjection follows, and the model continues in the same turn (one
doneat the end). When no rounds are left, or the reply already finished, the text becomes a new turn (done, then a newturn_id). - Steer messages are persisted with
interjection: true(message rows fromGET /api/sessions/{id}/messages; every other row hasfalse). A steer that became a new turn is an ordinary user message. The limit (await app.agent.tool_result_limit(role, model), kept onLoopResult.tool_result_limitand worked out again for a fallback model that answered) ischat.tool_result_max_chars(default 16000), and at mostchat.tool_result_context_share(default 0.25) of the model's context length at 3 characters per token, never below 1500: 6144 characters on an 8,192-token local model. A tool can give a shorter version of a long result withTool.shorten_fn(result) -> result | None; the model then reads that ([Result shortened from M characters to its main parts. ...]), still cut if it is longer than the limit. Other uploads do not mark the chat. Tool.exfiltrates: bool | fn(arguments, ctx) -> bool(also@tool(..., exfiltrates=),itool(..., exfiltrates=)): the call can move data out belowsend. Set onbrowser_type,github_update_issue, MCP tools that are not read-only,gcal_update_event(an event's existing guests see every change), and per call ongcal_create_eventwhenattendeesnames anyone other than the calendar's owner (calendar_id). Drafts (gmail_create_draft) and new private events stay free.rules.sends_out(tool, risk, arguments, ctx)is effective risksend/execorexfiltrates(a per-call function that fails counts as true).Tool.url_fn(arguments, ctx) -> str | None(also@tool(..., url_fn=),itool(..., url_fn=)): the web address a call loads. Set onweb_fetchandbrowser_open(url) andbrowser_click(the clicked link's address, resolved against the page).rules.address_carries_data(url)is true for a query string, a path over 100 characters, a fragment over 40, a user name, or a link the page snapshot cut short.ToolContext.untrusted: str:"", or the app's display name once a tool with untrusted output ran in this run (rules.untrusted_source). Calls the model chose in that same round are not affected. Chats save it on the session (sessions.untrusted) and start every later turn with it; a new chat starts clean. Task runs start with it when an outside event started them (the trigger's app, e.g."Webhooks") or when their transcript already holds such a result (rules.untrusted_in(messages, registry); a result whose tool is no longer registered counts, as"a tool that is no longer available", except the engine's own "unknown tool" refusal). A chat whosesessions.untrustedis stillNULL(created before this mark) is classified once from its stored tool results the same way and saved (""= clean). Subagents inherit it (delegate(..., untrusted=)).- Memory: while it is set, what the run learns waits for the user's review instead of being remembered (section 7, "Memories waiting for review").
ToolContext.visited: set[str]: web hosts this run loaded (a call with aurl_fnthat ran). Chats save them on the session (sessions.visited_hosts, a JSON list) and start every turn with them; task runs keep them for one stretch of work (a resumed run starts empty, so it asks more, never less).- While it is set,
run_looptreats any call wheresends_outis true as needing the user: with approvals (chat, voice, channels) it always sends anapproval_requestwithuntrusted: "Sentient read content from <app> in this chat, so it checks with you before sending anything.", whatever the mode, Allow rules or "Allow for this chat" say, and "Allow for this chat" does not cover the next one (cards and channel messages leave that button out). "Never" rules and the unprompted-work limit come first. Without approvals the call does not run: its result is{error: "Not done: this run read content from <app>, so <tool> needs the user's OK first. ..."}and the first one is described inLoopResult.needs_ok{tool, arguments, call_id, question}. Task runs stop after that round and ask (section 4); subagents and swarm workers just carry on without it. No model output can clear the mark. - Addresses: while the mark is set, a call whose
url_fnaddress is on a host not inToolContext.visitedandaddress_carries_dataasks (or is held) the same way, withuntrusted: "Sentient read content from <app> in this chat, and this address could carry your data to <host>, so it checks with you first."Short clean addresses and hosts already visited in the run or chat load freely. - The held call a task user approved is replaced, before it runs, by
{error: "The user said yes, but Sentient stopped while doing this, so it is not known whether it went through. ..."}, and then by its real result; a restart in between leaves that note and never repeats the call. await app.agent.run_tool(ToolCall, ctx) -> (result, is_error, content)runs one call the user approved outside the loop (lasting rules still apply).
- Tools (plugin
subagents):delegate_task(goal, context="", tools: list[str] | None = None, background: bool = False)(riskwrite, internal). Foreground: waits and returns{subagent_id, status, summary, files_created}. Background: returns{subagent_id, status: "running"}at once; when it finishes, a summary is added to the chat as an assistant message, subagent.updatedfires and a notification is created.delegate_tasks(tasks: list[{goal, context?}])runs up tosubagents.max_concurrentin parallel and returns every summary.
- Subagent
{subagent_id, session_id, parent_call_id, goal, status: "running"|"completed"|"error"|"cancelled", background, summary, error, tool_calls, started_at, finished_at, events: [ProgressUpdate]} GET /api/sessions/{id}/subagents→[Subagent]newest first;GET /api/subagents/{id}→Subagent;POST /api/subagents/{id}/cancel→Subagent. Domain eventsubagent.updated→Subagent(withoutevents).- While a foreground subagent runs, the parent emits
tool_progresswithkind: "subagent"anddata: {subagent_id, message}. - Subagents cannot spawn subagents, use the voice role, or run tools of effective risk
sendorexec; those calls are denied with an explanation the parent can relay. - Limits:
subagents.max_roundssteps (default 24),subagents.timeout_minutes(20), and on cloud modelssubagents.max_tokens(1000000) andsubagents.max_cost_usd(2.0, when the price is known;0= no limit). The repeated-call breaker applies too. Reaching one ends the subagent withstatus: "error"and a plainerror(Stopped after 24 steps without finishing.,Stopped after using 1,000,600 tokens without finishing. ...).
- Before compressing old turns,
run_turncalls the memory package'sFactMemory.flush_conversation(transcript: str, user_name: str) -> list[dict]so durable facts survive compression. - The system prompt includes
await app.user_model.context_for(user_text)(a short markdown block, may be empty). chat.turn_completeddata:{session_id, turn_id, tool_calls, tool_errors, skills_viewed: [name], user_text, reply}. Task runs publishtask.run_finished{task_id, run_id, status, tool_errors, skills_viewed}.Agent.run_loop(..., stop=fn):fn()is checked after each round of tool results; when it returns True the loop ends without another model call and setsLoopResult.paused(task runs use it forask_user).Agent.run_loop(..., budget=Budget(max_tokens, max_cost_usd))(sentient.agent.loop.Budget): checked before each model call; when it has run out the loop ends withLoopResult.stopped_by_budget(also inerror). Usage from local models is not counted;StreamChunk.cost(US dollars, or None when the price is unknown) feeds the cost.- Loop breaker, on every surface: when the same tool with the same arguments returns the same result
tools.repeated_call_limittimes (default 3; a different result starts the count again;0= off), the loop ends withLoopResult.stopped_by_repeat. Unattended loops (tasks, swarm workers, subagents, proactivity) also seterror. Withrepeat_nudge=True(chat turns, including voice and channels) the model is first told once to try something else; a further repeat ends the turn with a plain assistant reply (streamed astext_delta, thendone) saying it stopped because it kept repeating the same step. - A
ToolPluginwithscoped = Trueis never offered by default:registry.tools(),registry.catalog()andregistry.openai_schemas()leave it out, andopenai_schemas(names)includes its tools only when named.
Scripts also get
toolsandresultwithout importing them: small local models often forget the import.
- Tool
execute_code(code: str, purpose: str)(riskexec, plugincode). The script runs in Python 3 and can call Sentient tools:from sentient_tools import tools, resultthentools.internet_search(query="...")returns the tool's JSON result;result(value)sets the value returned to the model (otherwise stdout is returned). Arguments are keyword-only.tools.available()lists the callable tool names. A refused call raisesToolRefused; a tool that raises, or returns a dict with a truthyerror, raisesToolError(both importable fromsentient_tools;ToolRefusedsubclassesToolError). - Tool calls from a script: effective risk
readand internalwritetools run; otherwrite, sendandexectools are refused with a message telling the model to call that tool directly (where approvals can ask the user), unless approvals mode isoff. Lasting rules apply (section 2):nevertools are not listed and are refused, asktools are refused, andallowchanges nothing here (scripts still only read). Subagent, voice, code and terminal tools are not available inside scripts, in any approvals mode. At mostsandbox.max_tool_callscalls run per script;tool_callscounts calls that ran (refused ones are not counted). - Returns SandboxResult

Files the script writes to its working folder are copied tofiles/outputs/<run_id>/;files_createdholds names relative to the files folder (e.g.outputs/<run_id>/chart.png, usable with/api/files).erroris a plain-language sentence whenokis false: syntax errors (checked before running, with the line number), runtime errors with the failing line, timeouts, code execution turned off, Docker not running when the backend isdocker. - Python API:
await app.sandbox.run(code, *, session_id=None, channel="system", timeout_s=None, allowed_tools=None, on_output=None, read_only=False) -> dict(SandboxResult).allowed_tools: tool names or plugin ids the script may call (None= every tool the policy allows).on_output(kind, text): sync or async callback per output chunk.read_only: only effective riskreadtool calls run. - Backends:

- Named browser profiles,
browser.profiles{"<name>": {kind: "launch"|"attach", engine: ""|"auto"|"msedge"|"chrome"|"chromium", endpoint, notes}}. Names are lowercase letters, numbers and dashes (up to 40).defaultalways exists, is alaunchprofile and can't be renamed or deleted.launch: a persistent Playwright context on~/.sentient/browser/profiles/<name>(its own cookies, storage and sign-ins), driven through an installed Edge or Chrome (engineempty usesbrowser.engine; auto: Edge, then Chrome). Older versions'~/.sentient/browser/profilemoves toprofiles/defaulton first use (if it can't be moved, it keeps being used). Starts on the first tool call, hidden unlessbrowser.headlessis false, one window with tabs, closes itself afterbrowser.idle_minuteswithout use (not while visible). Site storage (localStorage, where many sites keep a sign-in) is made durable before a launched profile closes (switch, idle close, quit): the browser runs with a 1 s storage commit delay (--enable-aggressive-domstorage-flushing), and closing one that showed a website first closes its tabs with their beforeunload/unload handlers (a beforeunload prompt is accepted) and waits 1.5 s.attach: connects withconnect_over_cdpto a browser the user started with--remote-debugging-port.endpointmust be on this computer (localhost,127.0.0.0/8,::1;9333and127.0.0.1:9333are normalized tohttp://127.0.0.1:9333); anything else is refused with a plain message, and so is a DevTools port whosewebSocketDebuggerUrlpoints elsewhere. Sentient opens a tab of its own and follows only tabs that tab opens. Closing, idling out, switching profiles or deleting the profile only disconnects; the user's browser and its tabs stay open.browser_switch_tabrefuses a tab on a blocked or not-allowed site (it is left as it is).- One profile is open at a time. A tool call uses the run's profile (
ctx.extra["browser_profile"]), elsedefault, switching if another profile is open: profiles are signed in as different people, so a chat or run that picked none never keeps using a profile another run left open. The run's profile is the task'sbrowser_profilewhen a task run starts, and is replaced by a skill'sbrowser_profilewhenskill_viewreads it and by aprofileargument (the latest wins, for the rest of that chat turn or run). Switching closes the open one cleanly first, except a window the user opened withPOST /api/browser/open(signing in): then the call returns{error}asking the user to close it. An unknown name returns{error}listing the profiles.

downloads/in Sentient's Files folder. Browser tool results (includingbrowser_scroll) may include an optionaldownloadsarray of relative paths such as["downloads/report.pdf"].browser_open,browser_click,browser_type,browser_press,browser_selectandbrowser_backwait up to 0.3 s for a download to start during the action. Opening a URL that directly starts a download returns a normal browser result with its download status rather than a navigation error. Edge's internal downloads hub is excluded from browser tabs and does not replace the active page. If a download starts later, it remains tracked and is reported on a later browser result after saving finishes. Other browser results collect finished downloads immediately without that start wait. Actions do not wait for downloads to finish; unfinished downloads are listed by filename in an optionaldownloads_in_progressarray and reported underdownloadswhen a later result observes that they have finished. Saves reserve unique filenames under a short lock, then transfer concurrently. Each save is limited to 120 s total; when the limit is reached, Sentient asks the browser to cancel it, with a 5 s limit for that cancellation request. A cancellation failure is included indownload_errors. Failed saves are reported in an optionaldownload_errorsarray; they don't discard the browser action result or successful downloads from the same batch. Completed downloads that no browser result consumes become eligible for cleanup after 5 minutes, and active browser actions get the chance to report them before cleanup. browser_open(url, profile="")read → same asbrowser_snapshotplusprofile(http/https only; allow/block lists apply, also after redirects).profileswitches to that profile for this and the following calls of the run; empty uses the run's profile, elsedefault.browser_snapshot()read →{url, title, text, truncated?}.textisPage:/URL:/Scroll:header, interactive elements one per line ([e12] button "Sign in",[e4] textbox "Search" value="",[e7] combobox "Country" value="India" options: India | Japan,[e3] link "Docs" -> /docs, flagschecked, disabled, focused) and the readable page text, capped atbrowser.max_snapshot_chars. Paired chats only, like every command.- A message sent while a reply runs calls
app.agent.steer(session_id, text)(section 10); when that returns false (or the message has attachments) it is queued and answered as the next turn. - Voice notes and audio files are downloaded (20 MB max) and transcribed with
app.voice.transcribe_bytes; the chat sees "Heard: ..." first. Withvoice_replieson, a voice note is also answered withapp.voice.speakaudio. Photos and documents are saved tofiles/uploads/and passed as attachments. - Approvals arrive as messages with Allow, Allow for this chat and Deny buttons (resolving through
app.approvals); the message is edited to show the answer, also when it was answered on the desktop. - Delivery (chats with
deliver: true, fromnotification.new; a task'sdeliver_tocan keep its notifications on the desktop or send them only to chosen chats instead, section 4 "Where results go"): task results and failures (payload.eventinrun_completed,run_failed,planning_failed,clarification_needed,disabled,script_alert,script_failed,script_recovered; a completed run adds its result summary), questions from running tasks (payload.event = "question", withchannels.deliver_task_results; each option is a quick-reply button, callbacktq:<option index>:<run_id>, that answers throughapp.tasks.answer_question), plans awaiting approval (Approve plan / Decline →app.tasks.approve/decline), pending proactive suggestions (Approve / Dismiss → same asPOST /api/proactivity/suggestions/{id}), and notifications withpayload.subagent_id. Text is a short, link-free summary. Buttons are replaced by the outcome when pressed, or whennotification.updatedshows the plan/suggestion was handled elsewhere. A background subagent (subagent.updated, background: true,completed/error) whose session belongs to a paired chat sends its summary to that chat once. The Daily Brief (kind: "brief",payload.status: "active") is sent as its sections and lines, with links. A "Make this a rule?" proposal (rule_proposal.updated, section 2) made in a paired chat goes back to that chat (whateverdeliversays) with Make it a rule / Not now (rp:a:<id>/rp:d:<id>). Toggles:channels.deliver_task_results,deliver_plans,deliver_suggestions,deliver_subagents,deliver_briefs. - Answering a task's question by replying: the delivered question ends with "Tap an option, or reply to this message
with your answer." (without options: "Reply to this message with your answer."). The ids of the messages that carried
the question are stored per chat in SQLite (
channel_questions, kept 90 days), so this survives restarts. A text message or voice note (its transcript) without attachments that replies to one of them (Telegramreply_to_message.message_id, Discordmessage_reference.message_id) is the answer to that question: it goes toapp.tasks.answer_question, the chat gets "Thanks! I passed your answer to ''. It's carrying on now." and no chat turn starts. A reply to a question that was already answered or cancelled gets "That question has already been handled, so I didn't pass this on." Every other message, including replies to other messages, is normal chat, however many questions are waiting. Question buttons settle to "Answered: " or "Cancelled" when the question is handled anywhere.Incoming.reply_tocarries the replied-to message id for every channel. - WhatsApp (ADR 0020): Sentient is a linked device on the user's own account, through a WhatsApp Web bridge in
the engine (neonize, the optional
whatsappextra, included in installers). There is no token and no setup field.POST /api/channels/whatsapp/connect{fields: {}}→Channelwithstatus: "linking"(orconnectingwhen a session is already linked); thenchannel.updatedcarries eachqruntil the phone scans it, thenconnected. 400 when the extra is not installed or WhatsApp is turned off in Settings. A code that is never scanned ends inerror("The code expired before it was scanned...") and is not retried on its own.- The session (keys, not messages) is whatsmeow's SQLite file in
~/.sentient/whatsapp, never in config or the database. At startup a linked session reconnects; if it is gone, statusiserror("needs to be linked again"). Logged out on the phone →error"WhatsApp unlinked Sentient...", the session is deleted andaccount_labelcleared. Another copy using the link, or a temporary ban, ends inerrorwith a plain sentence. Dropped connections retry with backoff (1 s doubling to 60 s;errorafter 3 failures in a row). An exception from the WhatsApp library is caught at the bridge boundary and logged:statusbecomeserror("WhatsApp stopped working unexpectedly...") at once, reconnecting continues with backoff, and the engine keeps running. Exceptions in its event handlers are only logged. - Who can talk to it: after linking, the "Message yourself" chat (
chat_id<number>@s.whatsapp.net, label "Message yourself", also matched when WhatsApp addresses it by LID) is paired automatically and greeted once. Other chats can be paired with/pair <code>(instructions "From the other WhatsApp chat, send this to +: /pair"). Every other chat gets no answer at all (no refusal), and so do groups, status updates, channels, the user's own messages to other people and Sentient's own messages. - Options instead of buttons: a message with options ends with "Reply with a number:" (approvals) or "Reply to this
message with a number:" followed by
*1* Allow,*2* Allow for this chat... Replying to it with a number runs that option (the same callbacks as buttons:ap,tp,sg,tq) and the chat gets the outcome ("Allowed."); the message is edited to show it. A bare number (no reply) only answers a waiting approval. Out of range: "Reply with a number from 1 to N." A delivered question says "Reply with an option's number, or reply to this message with your answer." Replying to a delivered question with a number picks that option even after a restart (for every channel). - In the self chat every message Sentient sends (and every edit) starts with
*<assistant.name>:*, because there everything shows as the user's own; other paired chats get no prefix. - Replies use WhatsApp markup (
*bold*,_italic_,~strike~, code blocks; links as "label (url)"), 4000 characters per message, edited at most everychannels.whatsapp.edit_interval_s(2 s). No temporary status lines (a deleted message would leave "This message was deleted"). Voice replies are OGG/Opus voice notes when PyAV is present, otherwise the audio is sent as a file. Commands and everything else are as above;/stopallhas sourcewhatsapp.

contradict (−contradict_step; below dispute_below → disputed plus a question), retire.
Confirmed or user-written insights are never changed automatically: contradict/retire only queue a question.
Messages and summaries of a chat with sessions.untrusted set are outside material (ADR 0021): a new insight that
cites only outside material, or nothing while outside material was offered, is saved pending with a review note
(from = the app, snippet = the quote); support, contradict and retire citing only outside material are
ignored. Facts waiting for review are never evidence.

overlap ≥ merge_min_overlap, never facts whose names/places/numbers conflict; the kept fact keeps its id), settle
contradictions: facts are paired when they are about the same subject (name, possessive relation like "Sarthak's sister
Riya", or the user as "I"/"the user") and share an attribute family or differ in names/places/numbers or negation;
place, job, relationship and diet pairs are always checked, broader families (routine, ownership, health) need
similarity ≥ contradiction_similarity; the model confirms and names the current fact (the newer one wins unless the
model picks the older and only the older has explicit recent wording such as "now" or "this month"); the loser is
deleted and its text kept as the winner's previous_content; pairs the model cleared are not asked again until either
fact changes; promote short-term
facts recalled ≥ promote_min_recalls times, purge expired, refresh the user model. Model calls for merging and
contradictions are capped by dreaming.max_model_calls. journal_md is first person ("Tonight I merged 3 duplicate

memory.flush_max_chars), at most memory.flush_max_facts facts through the normal CUD path, memory.updated per change.
- After a chat turn or task run that viewed a skill and then hit tool errors or a user correction, the evolution
reviewer proposes a patch to that skill. It lands in pending review with
origin: "repair" and a reason naming the failure.
Evolution log kind skill_repair_proposed {name, session_id?|task_id?, reason}.
- Owner: evolution. Inputs:
chat.turn_completed (skills_viewed, tool_errors as a count or a list, user_text, reply)
and task.run_finished (status, tool_errors, skills_viewed). Failures: tool errors in the turn or run; a run with
status error, failed or completed_with_errors; or the next user message in that chat correcting the reply (a phrase
check such as "that's wrong", "didn't work", "not what I asked", "you forgot", confirmed by one fast call).
- Each viewed skill's use is counted in
Skill.success_count / failure_count (a correction turns the earlier success into a failure).
- The proposal is the complete updated SKILL.md in
skills/pending/<name> (GET /api/skills/{name}/diff compares it with the
active skill), a skill notification (section 8), skill.updated {state: "pending_review"}, and the log entry above with
origin: "repair", failure and pending: true. In GET /api/skills the pending entry has reason and origin.repair = true.
- Never activated automatically, whatever
skills.write_approval says. At most one open proposal per skill (no repair while
any proposal for it is pending) and at most one repair per evolution.repair_cooldown_hours; evolution.skill_repair: false turns it off.
Only skills in the writable skills folder are repaired.
- Connected Gmail and Google Calendar are watched with incremental change feeds (Gmail history, Calendar sync tokens)
every
integrations.fast_sync_seconds (default 60; 0 turns feeds off); this costs no model calls. IMAP email
(email_imap, app password) uses IDLE push, or a NOOP check every fast_sync_seconds when the server lacks IDLE.
- Gmail: the first sync takes the mailbox
historyId (nothing emitted); later syncs emit messages added to INBOX
(not SENT/DRAFT/SPAM/TRASH, at most 50 per sync). Expired history (HTTP 404) re-baselines from now without emitting.
- Calendar: the first sync is a full sync for a sync token (nothing emitted); later syncs emit
new_event (created
within 2 minutes of its last update) or updated_event, skipping cancelled and already-ended events. HTTP 410
triggers a full resync without re-emitting.
- IMAP: each watched folder (
folders, default INBOX alone) has its own cursor; the first check of a folder
records its highest UID, and a changed UIDVALIDITY re-baselines that folder. IDLE push only works for the
selected folder, so Sentient stays IDLE-subscribed to the first folder in the list and checks the rest right
after each wake or NOOP. Wrong app password marks the integration status: "error".
- Failures back off exponentially (base interval doubling, max 30 minutes) with a readable
last_error
(see GET /api/integrations/feeds); a failure never moves the cursor. Disconnecting (or connecting a different
account) forgets the cursor.
- Every new item is published exactly once as domain event
source.items
{source, event, origin: "poll"|"feed"|"webhook", items: [item]} with the item shapes from section 5, whether it was
found by a change feed, by poll_source, or arrived on a webhook. The integrations package keeps the shared
"already seen" record so a feed and a poll never emit the same item twice.
- Consumers: the tasks package fires triggered tasks for every origin (proactivity no longer calls tasks for polled
items). Proactivity keeps processing the items its own poll returns and also processes
feed and webhook origins
from the bus. When change feeds are active for a source, proactivity skips timer polling for it.
- Proactivity details (owner: evolution):
poll origins on the bus are ignored (those items come back from poll_source).
feed items are processed for sources in proactivity.sources; webhook items when proactivity.webhook_suggestions
is on, unless an enabled triggered task already handles that hook, and not when the body is empty. The reasoner is told
the payload came from the user's webhook named <name>. Feed state is read from app.integrations.feed_active(source) -> bool
(sync or async); while it is missing every watched source is timer-polled. POST /api/proactivity/poll-now polls regardless.
- Deduplication key per source: gmail message id; calendar
<event id>:<updated> (so a later change is new again);
IMAP Message-ID header (else <uidvalidity>:<uid>); webhook calls are always new. Keys are kept 30 days.
Items hidden by privacy filters are recorded as seen and never published.
- Webhooks:
GET /api/hooks → [{id, name, url, created_at, last_called_at, calls}];
POST /api/hooks {name} (1-80 characters, else 400) → hook plus secret (shown once; only its SHA-256 is stored);
DELETE /api/hooks/{id} → {ok} (404 unknown). url is the loopback gateway address the request came in on.
POST /hooks/{id} (no bearer token; header X-Sentient-Secret: <secret> or ?secret=, header preferred because
query strings can end up in logs) accepts a JSON, form (urlencoded or multipart), text or empty body up to
integrations.webhook_max_body_kb (default 256) → {ok: true, item_id}. Each hook accepts at most
integrations.webhook_rate_limit_per_minute calls a minute (default 30, a token bucket per hook; 0 turns it off).
Errors: 404 unknown hook, 401 wrong or missing secret, 429 too many calls (header Retry-After in whole seconds;
checked after the secret, so wrong-secret calls never use up a hook's budget, and a refused call is not published
or counted), 413 body too large, 400 invalid JSON with a JSON content type, 503 while Stop everything is on (header
Retry-After: 60; the call is not published or counted, so the caller can send it again after Resume). It publishes source.items
{source: "webhook", event: <hook id>, origin: "webhook", items: [{id, name, body, received_at, content_type, query}]}
(query excludes secret; multipart files appear as {filename, content_type, size}).
Triggered tasks use schedule: {type: "triggered", source: "webhook", event: <hook id>, filter}; the webhook
integration lists one trigger per hook (section 5).
- New
task_type: "script". Task field script {code, condition: "changed"|"alert"|"every_run", then: "notify"|"run", last_result, last_run_at, last_error}.
Runs on the task's schedule (recurring, interval, triggered, or a one-off run_at) through
app.sandbox.run(code, channel="task", allowed_tools=[read-risk tool names]), with no model calls. A check does not
create a Run: it updates script and the task goes active → processing → active (next run computed as usual).
alert: acts when the script calls result({"alert": true, "message": "..."}). changed: acts when the result differs
from last_result; the first successful result is only the baseline, and an empty (null) result is never a change
and keeps the baseline. every_run ("Report every run"): acts after every successful check that produced a value,
even the same one as last time; a check that prints nothing, or returns an empty or whitespace-only string, stays quiet. Its script_alert message is the script's
output itself (up to 3000 characters) when that is text.
The value is the script's result(...), else its trimmed stdout.
then: "notify" sends a task notification (title = task name, message = the alert message or a short description of the
value, payload: {task_id, event: "script_alert", result}); then: "run" starts a normal model run whose
trigger_event_data is {script_result, message, trigger_event?}.
- Triggered script jobs receive the event as a
trigger_event variable (a prelude is prepended to the code).
- Failures (
ok: false, timeouts, code execution unavailable) set last_error and keep last_result; a script_failed
notification is sent on the first failure only, and a script_recovered notification when a later check succeeds.
- Approval: script jobs wait in
approval_pending like plans (tasks.require_plan_approval); the UI shows script.code.
approve returns 409 when the code does not compile.
- The planner may propose a script job for watch-style requests ("tell me when...", "check every hour whether...") by adding
script (and a schedule, e.g. interval) to its reply. The code must use from sentient_tools import tools, result and
read-only tools; it is checked with ast.parse, the planner gets one chance to fix code that does not compile, then
planning fails with a readable error. A script job the planner leaves on an immediate one-off schedule becomes interval 60.
POST /api/tasks/{id}/script/test → SandboxResult (does not change last_result); see section 4.
/ws/voice start accepts mode: "conversation"|"wake" (default conversation). In wake mode the server sends
state: standby and listens only for voice.wake_word; on detection it sends {type: "wake", phrase, source: "voice", score?},
the chime when voice.wake_earcon is on (an audio message with earcon: true), and switches to listening.
After a reply, follow-ups are accepted without the wake word for voice.follow_up_seconds (default 8), counted from the
estimated end of playback of the audio sent; then it returns to standby. The same window applies after a wake with no request.
- Speech after the phrase in the same breath is the request: "hey sentient what's the weather" wakes and asks at once
(the phrase is removed from the
transcript).
{type: "wake"} from the client wakes without the phrase; end_utterance in standby processes speech without it.
- Engines (
voice.wake_engine):
whisper (default): speech segments from the VAD are checked by transcribing their first 3 s with
voice.wake_whisper_model (tiny/base, always local on the CPU) and fuzzy-matching the phrase, tolerating greeting swaps
("hi sentient"), split words and common mishearings ("hey sentence"). A leading greeting must be heard as a greeting.
openwakeword: streaming detector for pretrained phrases (hey_jarvis, alexa, hey_mycroft, hey_rhasspy) chosen by
voice.wake_model or derived from voice.wake_word, or a custom .onnx model path in voice.wake_model. Model files
download once to ~/.sentient/models/openwakeword on first use.
voice.wake_sensitivity (0..1, default 0.5): higher wakes more easily.
If the engine cannot be used (e.g. no pretrained model for the phrase) ready.wake.error is set, a recoverable
error follows state: standby, and the session stays in standby (client wake still works).
GET /api/voice/status adds wake: {engine, phrase, ready, model?, error?} (nothing is loaded by the call).
POST /api/voice/prepare {target: "wake"} loads (and downloads) the wake engine.

One deterministic control that stops all of Sentient's work at once. It never goes through the model, so no prompt
can ignore it.
- StopState
{stopped: bool, stopped_at: ISODate | null, source: string | null}. source says where it was last
turned on or off: desktop, tray, hotkey, telegram, discord or device.
GET /api/stop → StopState.
POST /api/stop-all {source?} (body optional, default desktop) → StopState plus cancelled (how many running
jobs were cancelled). Calling it again while stopped keeps stopped_at and source and cancels anything started since.
POST /api/resume {source?} → StopState (stopped: false, stopped_at: null).
- Every change publishes domain event
stop.updated (StopState) and stop_state to connected devices (section 13).
Devices hear about a stop after the work is cancelled; each device gets at most 2 s, side by side, so a slow
device never holds up the stop, the resume or the other devices.
GET /api/bootstrap includes it as stop.
- Stop everything, in this order: the flag is set and saved (so nothing new starts), then every running chat reply
(desktop, channels, voice; the partial reply is kept with "(stopped)"), task run (status
cancelled, progress
"Run stopped by Stop everything.", retryable from its checkpoint), task planning and check scripts, a chat reply's
Claude Code process tree (ADR 0022), helper
(subagent, status cancelled), running dream (status error, "Stopped by Stop everything.") and background job
(memory notes, reviews, suggestions) is cancelled. Code runs, terminal commands (section 18) and browser actions stop
with the reply or run they belong to; a command's whole process tree is killed. Runs waiting for the user's answer keep waiting.
- Messages queued before the stop are dropped, never sent: steer messages the running reply had not picked up yet,
chat.send turns waiting behind it on /ws (they end with error {message: "Stopped. Your queued message wasn't sent.", dropped: true, client_id} and done {cancelled: true, dropped: [text], client_id}, echoing the
client_id the message was sent with so the window can mark that message, not the newest turn), and messages queued in Telegram or Discord chats (the chat gets the
same note). The window shows steers of a cancelled reply as not sent. Messages sent after the stop work as usual.
- While stopped: the scheduler claims nothing (due tasks start on the first tick after Resume, following the missed-run
rules in section 4), triggered tasks
do not fire, change feeds, polls, push watchers and webhooks publish nothing (
source.items), and proactivity,
heartbeats, follow-ups, self-improvement reviews, the user model and dreaming do not run. Things the user starts
directly still work: chat, Run now, answering a task's question, Dream now.
- The state is stored in the database (
meta key stop.state), so a restart keeps Sentient stopped; interrupted runs
are not resumed until Resume.
- Resume clears the flag, then resumes work a restart would resume (runs left processing, tasks left planning).
- Engine API:
await app.stop_all(source) -> dict, await app.resume(source) -> dict, app.stopped -> bool,
app.stop_state. Services implement async halt() -> int (cancel in-flight work) and set pause_on_stop = True
so their run_every jobs are skipped while stopped.
- Push to talk and dictation (#169): Stop everything cancels a
POST /api/voice/dictate that is still transcribing or
cleaning up (409), and the desktop turns the microphone off and drops the recording.
- Surfaces: the desktop title bar button and banner, the tray menu, the global shortcut
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S
(Cmd+Alt+Shift+S on macOS; stop only), /stopall and /resume in paired Telegram and Discord chats, and the
stop_all / resume device messages (the web device app has a button).
Off by default (ADR 0019). Settings > Terminal (config section terminal) turns it on.
- Config
terminal: enabled (default false), allowed_folders: [path] (default []; nothing runs until one is
added), default_folder (default "": the first allowed folder), allowed_commands: [prefix] (default
["git status", "git diff", "git log", "ls", "dir", "pwd"]), timeout_s (default 180, 5 to 3600) and
max_output_chars (default 8000, per stream). While enabled is false the terminal plugin is hidden: the tool is
not offered or listed, and a call made anyway returns an error without running.
- Tool
terminal_run(command: str, cwd: str | None = None) (plugin terminal, risk exec). Runs command as a new
shell process: PowerShell on Windows (pwsh when installed, else powershell.exe, with -NoProfile -NonInteractive), else the user's bash or zsh, else bash, zsh or sh (-c). Each call is a fresh process; nothing
carries over between calls, and anything the command leaves running is stopped when it ends. stdin is empty.
- Checks, in code and in this order, before anything runs (a failed check returns
{ok: false, error} and nothing runs):
- turned on; 2. not work nobody asked for (ADR 0017:
ToolContext.origin unprompted is refused even with an
Allow rule or a listed command); 3. a command of at most 8000 characters; 4. not on the built-in blocklist
(formatting or wiping disks, shutting down, restarting or signing out, deleting from the registry, deleting or
re-owning a whole drive, system folder or home folder, deleting backups, changing boot settings, fork bombs),
which no setting or rule overrides; 5. the folder: cwd absolute or relative to the default folder, resolved
with links followed, must exist and be inside an allowed folder; 6. in task runs, helpers and other runs nobody
can be asked in (channel task, subagent or system) only a listed command runs, unless terminal or
terminal_run has an Allow rule or approvals mode is off.
- Effective risk (
risk_fn): exec, so it asks in modes ask and always unless an Allow rule says otherwise
(section 2). A listed command is read: it runs without asking (mode always still asks). A command matches a
listed prefix when it equals it or starts with it plus a space (case-insensitive on Windows), and contains none of
; & | < > ` $ ( ) { }, line breaks, --output, --exec, --ext-diff or --textconv. A call that fails a check is also read, so the user
is not asked to approve a refusal; work nobody asked for stays exec. "Allow for this chat" never
covers it (Tool.allow_for_chat = False): each command asks again unless a listed command or an Allow rule applies,
and the card offers no "Allow for this chat" button.
approval_request for it: risk_label "Runs a command", target the folder it will run in (its last 120
characters when longer). The card shows the exact command and the folder.
- Output streams as
tool_progress (kind: "stdout" | "stderr", newlines normalized) up to max_output_chars per
stream, then one kind: "status" note. Returns TerminalResult {ok, command, cwd, shell, exit_code, stdout, stderr, timed_out, stopped, duration_ms, output_file, error}. ok is true when the exit code is 0. A non-zero exit
code is not an error. stdout and stderr keep the start and the end of each stream within max_output_chars
([... N characters cut here ...] in between); when anything was cut the full output (up to 2,000,000 characters per
stream) is saved and output_file names it under the files folder (outputs/terminal-<run id>.txt). error is a
plain sentence for refusals, timeouts ("The command took longer than 180 seconds and was stopped. ..."), a stopped
command ("The command was stopped before it finished.", stopped: true) and a shell that could not start.
- The environment is the engine's own without secrets: variables whose names look like keys, tokens, passwords or
credentials, Sentient's own
SENTIENT_* and LITELLM_* variables and every models.providers.*.api_key_env are
removed; keychain secrets are never added. SSH_AUTH_SOCK is kept. GIT_TERMINAL_PROMPT=0 is set, and
SENTIENT_TERMINAL_RUN=<run id> marks the run's processes. A listed command also gets core.fsmonitor=false
through GIT_CONFIG_COUNT/GIT_CONFIG_KEY_n/GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_n, so a repository's config can't make git status
or git diff start a program without a question.
- Stopping: at
timeout_s, from the card's Stop button and from Stop everything (section 17) the command's whole
process tree is killed: a Job Object on Windows; elsewhere its process group plus every process carrying its run
marker, so a child that left the group (setsid) dies too. The same sweep runs when a command ends, so nothing it
started keeps running (a process that clears its own environment can still escape on macOS and Linux).
Cancelling the chat reply also kills it.
- Outside content (ADR 0018): the tool is tagged
untrusted_output, so its output marks the chat; a command that
isn't listed has effective risk exec, which counts as sending out, so after outside content it asks with the
untrusted reason on the card even with an Allow rule (and is held in runs nobody can be asked in). Listed commands
stay read and free.
- Scripts (section 11) can never call it, in any approvals mode.
GET /api/terminal/status → {enabled, shell, shell_path, allowed_folders, default_folder, blocked: [string], running: [{id, call_id, command, cwd, started_at}]} (id is unique per run). shell is pwsh, powershell, bash, zsh, sh or null.
default_folder is where a command without cwd would start, or null when none can.
POST /api/terminal/stop {id} (a run id or the tool call id) → {stopped: bool}. The tool then returns what the command
printed so far with stopped: true.
- Engine API:
await app.terminal.run(command, cwd, ctx) -> dict (TerminalResult), app.terminal.check(command, cwd, ctx), app.terminal.stop_command(id) -> bool, app.terminal.status() -> dict; pure checks in sentient.terminal.guard.
Brings a Hermes Agent home folder (default ~/.hermes) into Sentient in one step: preview first, then apply the parts
the user picks. Code: sentient/migrate/hermes.py; the Hermes file formats it relies on are listed in its docstring.
Only these are opened: config.yaml, SOUL.md, memories/MEMORY.md, memories/USER.md (else USER.md),
skills/**, cron/jobs.json and a job's script under scripts/. auth.json, .env, sessions, logs and state
databases are never read, skill folders are copied without dotfiles or symlinks, and no secret value is imported.
GET /api/import/hermes → {path, exists} (the default folder and whether it is there)
POST /api/import/hermes/preview {path?} → HermesPreview (400 with a plain detail when the folder is missing
or doesn't look like a Hermes home)
POST /api/import/hermes/apply {path?, parts: ["skills"|"memory"|"persona"|"jobs"|"mcp"], skip?: [item key]} →
HermesResult. The plan is worked out again from the folder, so only items a preview shows as import are
imported; skip leaves items out. The persona is replaced only when persona is in parts (the user confirmed the
diff). 400 when parts is empty.
DELETE /api/import/hermes/memories → {facts, insights} (deletes every fact and insight with source
import:hermes)
HermesPreview

note says in plain words what will happen, or why an item is skipped. persona is null without a SOUL.md; a job's
schedule is null and script is null when it has none; then and condition are only on script jobs; each
suggestion may be null.
- Skills are copied to
~/.sentient/skills/pending/<target>/ (never active; approve them under Skills). A skill
listed in skills/.bundled_manifest whose folder still has Hermes' hash is skipped; one the user changed is
imported with changed_builtin: true. Hidden folders (.archive, .hub, .curator_*) are ignored. target is
made unique (<name>-hermes, <name>-hermes-2...) when Sentient already has that name; a skill whose body Sentient
already has is skipped. The copied SKILL.md gets name: <target> and tags from metadata.hermes.tags.
- Memory:
MEMORY.md entries (separated by a line holding only §) become facts, USER.md entries become
user-model insights (confidence 0.6), both with source import:hermes; "User" becomes the user's name. Both wait
in the memory review inbox (section 7, from: "Hermes") until the user approves them. Facts are stored without
model calls (embeddings only); duplicates are skipped. DELETE /api/import/hermes/memories removes them, approved
or not.
- Persona:
SOUL.md replaces Sentient's SOUL.md (current and proposed let the window show a diff).
- Scheduled jobs become paused tasks (section 4, "Imported tasks"). Schedules: cron
M H * * * → daily,
M H * * <days> → weekly, */N * * * * → every N minutes, M * * * * → hourly, M */H * * * → every H hours,
interval → every N minutes, a future once → one time. Anything else (days of the month, several times a day,
more often than every 5 minutes) is skipped with the expression in note. A job with script or monitor_script
becomes a script task (condition changed; then: run when it also has a prompt, else notify) only when the
script is a Python file inside scripts/ that compiles; otherwise it is skipped with the reason. A script job
gets condition every_run (Hermes reports it on every run that prints something), a monitor_script job
changed. A job's Hermes skills are named in the task's description. A job already brought over (same Hermes id)
is skipped. The job's deliver (kept as original_context.hermes_deliver) becomes the task's deliver_to
(section 4): whatsapp:<anything> → the paired "Message yourself" chat, or {"channel": "whatsapp", "chat_id": "self"} with a hint to link WhatsApp when it isn't paired yet; telegram:<id> / discord:<id> → the paired chat
with that id, else every paired chat of that app (default when that is more than 10 chats), else default
with a hint; origin → the same for
origin.platform and origin.chat_id; local (or nothing) → desktop. Several comma-separated targets add up.
- MCP servers are added turned off (
POST /api/integrations/mcp/{name}/enabled turns one on), keeping the URL or
command and arguments, auth: oauth (sign in again) and only the names of headers and environment settings; their
values are never copied (fill them in with POST /api/integrations/mcp/{name}/values, section 5). A name Sentient already has is skipped, and so is a server whose URL or arguments seem to
carry a key (--api-key abc, --token=abc, ghp_..., ?api_key=...; ${VAR} references are fine), so that
key never lands in config.yaml.
- Suggestions (wake phrase and voice) are only shown; nothing changes.
